Five Ways to Involve Your Dad in Your Wedding

Bridal hot list is made up of people who really love their dads- so we’re all super excited for Father’s Day! In honor of the upcoming holiday, we’ve got a few ways to work your dad into your wedding in ways that’ll make him feel loved.

Make Him Feel at Home

Does your dad have a routine of some kind? Maybe a favorite mug or a specific kind of coffee he totally needs after dinner? Do something sweet for him and make it happen at your wedding! We recently saw a bride who made a beautiful seat sign for her father’s chair that said ‘Dad’ on it, and it was so sweet! Do something small and specifically for him and it’ll make him feel at home and appreciated.

Boogie Bonding

The father-daughter dance is a fantastic tradition for a reason- it’s a sweet moment between father and daughter in front of all their loved ones! Get together and pick a song that means a lot to both of you. If you have time, figure out ways to make your dance fun! A little choreography never hurt anyone, right? You can count it towards your cardio and get a chance to see dear old dad dance. Everybody wins!

Sneak a Special Note

Write out a short note to your dad, and be sure to thank him. This day is all about how you fell in love and are going to start your own family now, it’s important to recognize where you came from. If you feel stuck, tell him how much it means to have him there and that you love him. It doesn’t need to be sappy, it just needs to be genuine. Sneak it into his jacket while he’s dancing or stick it under his plate so he finds it after dinner.

Coordinate Outfits

Help him pick out his suit! You’ll be able to help control the color scheme of the wedding, and be sure he looks great walking you down the aisle. Going shopping with your girlfriends is a great way to bond, why not go shopping with your dad as well? It’ll help him take care of a wedding task, you get to assist in making sure he looks sharp, plus you get time to bond. You’ll wonder why you don’t take your dad out shopping more often!

Let Him Call Some Shots

Let him have one song for sure play during the reception. Let him be the tie-breaker on any decisions you’re unsure on. Ask him his opinion on what to serve for dinner. Dads love being involved and getting heard. It may be a weird time for him to realize you may not be all his little girl anymore- it’s a good gesture to show that he’s still a big part of your life and that you still trust his opinion.

Four Tips and Tricks for Cooking for Father’s Day

Father’s day is right around the corner, and planning for dad has begun! We know that most dads love to cook and grill, but how about giving dad a break this Sunday and treating him instead? Instead of going out and trying to fight with the crowds, high menu prices, and waiting to get seated, why not stay in and enjoy a nice time at home? Never cooked before or not as skilled in the kitchen?  No worries, we’ve got some cooking  tricks and tips to make it as easy and delicious as can be! Go ahead, and treat dad this Sunday with a home cooked meal.

IMG_6755

  1. Think about buying large beef roasts or pork shoulders to make during one of your weekend nights. After you have this for dinner, store it in your fridge so that you will be able to create many different types of sandwiches, as the week progresses. Maximize your value and limit your expenses by conserving food.
  2. Saute tired salad greens. If your salad greens have seen better days, don’t discard them – saute them! Salad greens such as radicchio, arugula and endive make a tasty side dish when sauteed. Cook them quickly in olive oil, chopped garlic and sea salt. Sprinkle with a little bacon and goat cheese, and you will be happy that you didn’t throw away those unused salad greens!
  3. To reduce the fat and calories in a recipe that calls for a lot of mayonnaise, simply replace half the mayonnaise with sour cream. Since mayonnaise serves primarily a textural purpose in many of these recipes, replacing it with similarly textured sour cream gives you the same texture with a lighter, healthier taste.
  4. Vegetables are just better all-around the faster they are cooked. Using a slow cooking method is sometimes suggested, but the results are less nutritious and don’t taste as good. The quick cook methods generally make the vegetables tastier and more nutritional. You should only cook them just as long as it takes for them to be done.

Impress your dad with your new-found cooking skills. With a bit of effort, some love poured into the cooking, you can take your cooking up a notch. Time in the kitchen should be enjoyed. Use what you have learned, and go cook up a storm for dad!

Five Ways to Bond with Your Father-In-Law

In honor of Father’s Day coming up this weekend, we’ve got our focus on some of our favorite guys- our dads! It can be intimidating when your family gets bigger- especially if you’re getting a whole new set of parents as in-laws. We want to help you get along with your new family, and that can start with some good old fashioned bonding. We’ve got tips on how to bond with your new father-in-law that’ll make you the new family favorite.

Figure Out His Favorites

One of the best ways to learn more about a person is to find out what they love and why they love it. Ask him what his favorite book is, then read it. While you’re reading think about the themes and characters. After you’ve read it, bring it up by mentioning that you checked out that book on his recommendation. You’ll be able to talk about what you both liked and may have not liked about it. Plus, it can be humbling for someone to have their recommendations taken seriously. You’ll score some points!

Ask Questions

Next time you’re both at family functions, ask open ended questions that you would be able to answer as well. Try to avoid yes or no questions, or anything that could end a conversation abruptly (ex., how was traffic/weather/your dinner can be conversation killers). Try to find out more about his life with questions about what his favorite things are, where his dream vacation spot is, what his pets growing up were like. Give him the chance to tell a story and he’ll feel closer to you.

Show Off in the Kitchen

Everyone has their signature dish- you should be proud of yours! If you’re doing a family potluck, or even just all getting together for some grub, be ready to cook. As the old saying goes- the best way to get to someone’s heart is through their stomach! If your cooking skills are limited, don’t let that stop you. Try new things and be willing to do some taste testing.

Be Grateful

When he helps out, when he sends gifts, when he does anything for you, always be grateful. It can be difficult for some people to let in a new member of the family, and being friendly and grateful will go far. If he gets any gifts, helps pay for anything, or goes out of his way be sure to thank him.

Take Pictures

This one goes past posting pictures on instagram with the caption #HappyFamily. Involve the in-laws in group pictures and share the shots later. Pictures and happy images can go a long way- it’ll help you both remind each other of the great times you’ve shared! You’ll be able to look back in a few years and wonder how you ever weren’t close with the in-laws.

Meet Cortney and Travis. They have been together for 7 years and have an adorable daughter. What I offer couples that have been together more than a period of time is a session what I like to call the Beloved Session. It is a unique and emotional photo session for couples that have been together longer than 3 years. Instead of capturing posed images I give my clients things to say or do that maybe you have never done before or have not done recently in your relationship. By giving you cues or things to say it creates a genuine photograph that represents the two of you.
Cortney and Travis are a fun loving, easy going couple and that is reflected in most all of these photographs. My couples says they walk away as if their relationship has been renewed or having a greater appreciation for the other person.
Jaime Davis Photography is offering $100 off any Beloved session until Sept 1st! If you are interested in sharing some romantic moments with your love, contact Jaime Davis Photography and book your session today!  email: jaime@jaimedavisphoto.com

Top Five Post-Wedding Must Have’s

After the ceremony, you’ll need a few tools of the trade to get through all of the aftermath. You may not realize it, but once you need it you’ll seriously need it. Stash these things away and enjoy being a stress-free newlywed!

Stamps

You don’t realize you need them til it’s one in the morning and you’re about twenty short! Stop by the post office, or even the supermarket and pick up a book of forever stamps. You’ll be needing them for all the thank you notes that’ll have to go out after you get back from the honeymoon. If you want to score some bonus points, send postcard thank you’s from your honeymoon! Either way, you’ll need a whole lot of forever stamps. They’re always good to have on hand.

Boxcutter

This handy dandy tool will be your new best friend when you’re going through all your fun wedding gifts. Put down those junk drawer scissors that you use for everything and opt for the right tool for the job. Box cutters are one of the most overlooked household staple- and when you’re unboxing everything you’ll need it! Pick up one with a safety guard so you don’t accidentally hurt yourself and you’re good to go!

Frozen Food

A stocked fridge is a happy fridge, am I right? With all the wedding craziness, you probably won’t have time to stock the fridge full of fresh (i.e., perishable) food all the time. Most of your meals will be on the go or during functions (bridal brunch, rehearsal dinner, tastings, etc.). Instead of buying all fresh food that could go bad, keep some frozen food in the fridge for the meals that you will be home for. We love frozen fruit for easy smoothies and frozen veggies with some teriyaki as a quick stir fry. It’ll be much easier than squeezing all the fruit in the kitchen to see which ones are safe to eat.

BHL1.jpg.jpg

Bleed-Free Pens

A good pen makes a WORLD of difference. Hit up an office supply store and test out a few until you find a brand that doesn’t bleed for you. You can’t risk any smudgy ink when you’re signing papers, writing thank you’s, or wearing white. Having pens explode either in your purse or in your hand can be a major set back. Even if they’re a little pricier, a good pen that won’t smudge on you is worth the splurge.

Frames

You went through all the trouble of getting a photographer and looking good- now get ready to show off all those awesome pictures! Look around at any framed photos you have up now- if there’s any that you’d want to switch out, get them ready for some wedding shots! And while you’re registering, keep an eye out for neat looking frames. Your wedding will be one of the best days of your life, so you’ll want to be reminded of it all the time.

Top Five Wedding Planning Ideas

At BHL, we love weddings, and we really love the planning of them too! Yes, they can be stressful, but with the right tools and your wedding coordinator by your side, it can be a seamless and lovely day! Today, we are giving you five tips on some of the important elements of the wedding day to consider when planning your big day.

  1. Giving gifts to your bridesmaids and groomsmen is a nice way of saying thank you for being there for you on your special day. Best time to do this? You can present the gift at the rehearsal dinner, or the morning off while you are getting ready. Take a moment to thank your girls, and grooms, to thank your groomsmen. It is also a great way to start the wedding day and have cheers and a toast to follow!
  2. Make sure that everyone in your wedding party knows how they’re getting to the wedding site and back home from your wedding! This is especially important if you’re going to be serving alcohol, and essential if it’s an open bar. If you’re worried about anyone getting too inebriated, offer free cab rides to anyone who doesn’t bring a car, or drive them home in your limo.
  3. Wedding bands are a vital part of the wedding, as they help to signify the joining of two parties. Make sure that on the days leading up to the wedding and on the wedding itself to have someone who you can count on keep track of your wedding bands to ensure security.
  4. Make sure to include healthy food options for your reception. You might have a vegetarian in attendance or someone who’s just trying to lose weight. Be sure to supply them with options they can enjoy. Vegetables, cooked or raw, and fruit for dessert, will go a long way for anyone who wants to eat something that won’t pack on the pounds.
  5. One of the most awkward moments at a wedding can be the bouquet toss. If women don’t want to get involved they shouldn’t be pressured to, so let the DJ know not to say anything to upset the guests. Take a poll before the wedding to see if anyone is really interested in participating and if not, skip it!

Top Five Must-Haves for a Stay-Sane Bridal Kit

Planning a wedding isn’t easy- there’s a reason there’s an entire profession dedicated to expertly handling the event. There can be a ton of stress that goes along with making one big event go perfectly and smoothly. It’s important to be able to take a moment to relax and de-stress so you don’t get overwhelmed or anxious before the big day. We have a few must-have items that you’ll need to get through the hectic planning phase. Just keep this kit stashed somewhere nearby and you’ll feel zen in no time. Bonus points if you’re a bridesmaid and can put this together for the bride!

On the Go Lotion

BHL1.jpg.jpg

Keep a small stash of lotion on hand in case you feel dry, or if your head starts to hurt. If you feel a headache coming on, simply take a tiny bit of lotion and rub your palms. Focus on the part of your palm just under your thumb and it can ease the pain. Simple massaging and rubbing can fend off the worst of migraines and headaches without popping any pills. Plus, your hands will get super soft!

Instant Smiles

BHL2.jpg.jpg

When you’re getting frustrated or flustered, the best thing you can do is mentally retreat to good times. Thinking about a fun party or people you love can help you refocus and get into a good mood (even if it feels challenging in the moment!). Keep cute pictures that make you smile stashed in your purse or set as the wallpaper of your phone. Having constant reminders of the love and the light in your life will keep you feeling good, even if you’re under stress.

Snack Attack

BHL3.jpg.jpg

This may sound maternal- but always pack a snack! Sometimes skipping meals or not eating enough can make people cranky or irritable. You want to go into all your wedding decisions and meetings feeling good and balanced- so attack it with a snack! It doesn’t have to be anything big, but your snacks should work for you. If you’re super active and need more energy early in the day, you may need something a little heavier. If you get sleepy or just need something to chew, maybe little pieces of candy just to wake you up. Keep a stash in your car just in case you need something on the go between meals. Just try not to snack too much before the cake tasting!

Stay Shady

BHL5.jpg.jpg

Good sunglasses are a Southern California staple and should never be forgotten! You may need to remember to stash them in your purse before you start running around doing wedding errands for more reasons than just to look cute. Keeping the sun out of your eyes keeps your eyes from straining, preventing symptoms like headaches and eye strains. Keeping UV lights from getting to your sensitive eye skin can prevent your eye skin from aging as quickly. The less damage your eyes receive, the less damaged your eyes look! Make sure your pair of shades is not only adorable, but offer some UV protection. You’ll thank us when you look refreshed and young in your wedding photos!

The Es-scent-ial Candle

BHL4.jpg.jpg

Have you ever smelled something and immediately felt happy? Your sense of scent is actually very strong and is known to cultivate memories. Go splurge on a great candle for yourself that reminds you of being happy. If you don’t have any scents that you can think of, look for a stress-relief candle (yes, it’s a thing!). Light it when you get home as you’re relaxing or working on wedding planning. The scent will help you stay level headed and ready to focus.
