Top Five Tips for Planning Your Honeymoon

The best part of planning a party? The afterparty, of course! After your wedding wraps, keep the good times rolling with an awesome honeymoon. Don’t know where to start? We got you covered.

Decide on Old vs. New

Talk it over with the fiancé, and figure out if you want to revisit a place in the world that is special to you, or to explore a new corner of the globe. You may want to go back to the place where you had your first romantic getaway, or go to a dream destination that you haven’t been to yet. While most people tend to try out new places, there can be some stability in going somewhere you’ve gone before. Vegas, for example, can be a great place for both parties and romantic getaways. It’s pretty decent year round and there are always some deals for it. Places like New York City or Miami need a little more thought- they’re not always perfect year round and you’d want to do some research before heading out there.

Define Your Time

Consider what you’d want to do on your honeymoon- are you an adventurous pair that would want to jump off of the faces of mountains? Do you want to eat your way through a foodie paradise? Do you plan on lounging around by the pool? Even if a city sounds like a blast, think about how you want to spend your time. New York City may be fantastic for culture, but if you’d rather hang out on the beach it may not be the dream destination for this trip. Just remember- this won’t be the only vacation you go on! It’s just your first as a married couple. Don’t feel pressured to go to one place because you’ve always wanted to- go where you feel you’d enjoy your time the best! And if that’s Myrtle Beach for the tenth time, so be it.

Plan Before You Pack

Once you have a basic location, it’s good to know what kind of travel to book. Certain locations and areas of the world will be able to do all-inclusive packages, so you don’t need to worry about doing food or any random activities. This is very common in resort towns like Cancun, Cabo, and Playa del Carmen. It’s good to think about how you want to vacation- do you want to explore a city, or do you want to really sit back and relax for a while? Think about whether or not you want to do an all-inclusive package or piece your trip together yourself.

Check Your Dates

Do research on sites like TripAdvisor and the city’s tourism website to find out what times of the year are best to go. Find out if Fridays and Saturdays are super crowded and busy, or if it’s more of a Thursday-Friday town. If you’re planning on doing museums or beaches or even nightlife, think about what kind of experience you want to have. Cross reference your dates as much as you can so you won’t be surprised by long lines or crazy crowds at any point.

Ask for Help

Hit the blogs looking for travel tips and tricks for your destination. It can be a good idea to check out local hot spots through Yelp, check out hotels on TripAdvisor, and if you’re leaving the country, look up any travel tips for getting through customs. Some countries may surprise you by having entry or exit fees that you may not have known about before. You can also ask your friends on social media if they’ve been to where you’re heading and ask for advice.  Do some digging just to help anticipate any issues or questions you may have.

Top Three Southern California Honeymoon Spots

It is always hard to come back from a lovely weekend and start another week. What a drag right? Well, we still have the weekend on our minds too, and that is why today we today’s post is all about weekend getaways. If you are looking for a short honeymoon trip, and something super romantic, yet close to home, then we’ve got you covered! Get ready to pack your bags and head out to your “staycation honeymoon”. Yep, you do not have to travel too far to have a romantic trip with your love. Take a look at our top three favorite spots in Southern California to honeymoon. All of them are in the downtown areas, and what can we say, we love downtown cities!

  •  Downtown San Diego: San Diego is one of the most beautiful cities in California.  What is great about this city is that there are so many things to do, and great places to see! Out of all the places in San Diego, we love the downtown area the best. Downtown San Diego has everything in one spot! From amazing restaurants, hip bars, fabulous hotels, a fantastic ball park, to the sands of the breathtaking beaches. Here is a sample itinerary: Take the train (the train ride itself is super relaxing with stunning ocean-views!) to the heart of downtown, and check in to one of the many lovely hotels. Once you check in, take a stroll down and eat at any of the many places for lunch. There are some pretty darn good places to eat. Our favorite spot? Oh, that will be another post another day! Ask your desk concierge, or yelp it!  After eating, you can head to Seaport Village, which is a tourist spot, but has cute little shops to browse, and can walk along the gorgeous oceanside. Holding hands and enjoying each other is perfect!  If the local San Diego Padres Baseball team is at home, you can attend the game that evening. Following that, you can head to a local bar, or head back to the hotel, where some of them will have live music to enjoy. The next morning after breakfast, you can check out the historic USS Midway Museum, or take a walk to the harbor and have a  romantic picnic. Take the train back home, and do not have to worry about traffic and can relax and browse through the weekend photos together.

  • Palm Springs: We can not get enough of Palm Springs.  Within 1-2 hours of Los Angeles, San Diego, or Orange County, this fantastic dessert destination is the perfect weekend honeymoon location. We personally like to stay in downtown Palm Springs. Stay at one of the many lovely and quaint boutique hotels close to downtown. Most of the hotels have pools, because as you know, it can get pretty hot. But that is the best part! Pool parties, or just relaxing in one of the cabanas.  As soon as you enter Palm Springs, you already feel relaxed. Things to do with your love? Go the pool, lay out, and relax! When is cools down, you can head to the downtown street where all the restaurants are.  Whatever your craving, you will find it! From romantic spots, to funky and cool places, downtown Palm Springs has some great options. It is just fun to walk around downtown and check out the stores, and eat some fabulous food. Best thing about Palm Springs and why it is our choice for a honeymoon spot? Just that you can do absolutely nothing but eat and lay out at the pool, (throw in a couple’s massage and spa day in the mix), and you have yourselves a pretty amazing honeymoon!

  • Laguna Beach: One of the most gorgeous and iconic spots in Orange County, California. Staying in Laguna beach is like a newlywed paradise. We do not even know where to start with this location, as it is really perfect. y at Hotel Laguna or The Laguna Beach Inn, as they are two great hotel locations. Not only do these hotels have breathtaking ocean views, but they are steps away from the beach, restaurants, park, and art museums. After some sunbathing all day, and a lovely dinner, make sure to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful sunset. That in itself is so romantic, that you will want to live in that moment forever.

Whatever destination you choose, make it your own, and make sure to enjoy every moment! Pack your bags and go!

Five Tips for Saving on Your Honeymoon

The big day is just around the corner- but that means the big vacation is too! Whether you’re hopping on a plane right after the reception or getting settled then hitting the road to enjoy your new spouse, you’re going to want to enjoy your honeymoon. A honeymoon is a well-deserved romantic vacation, and it’s absolutely worth saving for. We want to help, so we have our top five tips to help you save on the best vacation you’ll ever take.

Passports.jpg.jpg

Work Seasonally

Plan your trip against the tourism seasons, and you’ll save yourself time, money, and a headache. It’s easy to find out when a city is in high season- just check out their hotel prices in one month versus the next month. The higher the hotel rates, the more popular the destination is at that time. If you’re unsure, just call a hotel and ask their front desk when the best times are to get to that city. As a rule, most travel in July and August will be higher season for more popular areas. If you’re able to travel when it’s not a major school holiday (summer, spring, or winter break), it won’t be as popular a time to travel.

Get Organized

While you’re doing research on where to travel, be organized with all of your findings. If you have your heart set on Maui and plan for an off-season visit, write down the ballpark numbers that you’re seeing. The earlier you start budgeting, the better! You probably already have some practice working on the wedding, so this shouldn’t be a big deal. Keep this budget in mind and give yourself some wiggle room to cover any random taxes, expenses (ever forget your phone charger and have to buy one at the airport?), and souvenirs.

Mark Your Calendar

Once you’ve got your trip planned, try to buy any plane tickets about two to three weeks before your departure date. That’s typically the sweet spot when some fare cuts are made before they go right back up. Airfare is very difficult to get deals on, so you just have to be strategic about when you book.

Get a Room

Reach out to the resort or hotel that you want to book and tell them it’s your honeymoon. Sometimes that magic ‘H’ word can make miracles happen. Hotels want to accommodate you so that you have the best time of your life and want to come back. Call ahead, speak to a sales manager and tell them your story. Mention how much you’ve wanted to come out to their city and how much you love the property. They may be able to lower your room rate, upgrade you to a better suite, or even comp some champagne to celebrate!

Plan Your Meals

One of the biggest expenses you may not budget properly for? Food and entertainment. Before hitting the road, do some research on sites like Groupon or LivingSocial to see if there’s restaurants that you’ll want to check out. It’s an easy way to save yourself money before you even start, plus it keeps you from being indecisive and wasting time searching for restaurants that you’d want to try once you’re there. Show tickets, museum admission, meals, and even transportation can be found for discounted prices online. Plus, most sites let you download the app and use that to redeem your vouchers- less to lug around while you’re traveling!

10 Helpful Honeymoon Packing Tips

The wedding is over and now it’s time to bask in the warmth of newlywed bliss.  It’s honeymoon time! The last thing you want on your honeymoon is to worry if you packed adequately for the trip.  Just like planning a wedding, getting ready for the honeymoon will ensure you are prepared and leave you stress free.  It’s important to start packing early and research your destination well before hand in case you need to buy any additional items.  We’ve compiled 10 useful tips to help make packing for your honeymoon a breeze!

1. Check the weather.  Research your destination to get a sense of the weather during the season of your visit.  This way you will not be caught off guard by the variances in your destination’s weather

2. Expect the unexpected.  The thing about traveling is that you can never be certain of what to expect when you get there.  That is why it’s important to pack at least one out of season outfit.  If you go to a tropical place pack a warmer outfit just to be safe, etc.

3. Chargers!  Do not forget your chargers.  Whether they be camera, computer or phone chargers make sure you pack the right chargers.  You will want to capture every special moment exploring a new place with your husband, so pack those chargers.

4. Check in with your family.  Before you leave, send your family members the itinerary for your trip.  This ensures they know where you will be should any unforeseen incidents occur.  This will ease the worries of loved ones while ensuring your safety as well.

5. Medicine cabinet. You don’t know how your body is going to react when you visit a new place so it’s nice to have some basic medications on hand.  Travel size aspirin and allergy medication. Tums and Eye drops are a great start to a basic medicine travel kit.  Feel free to add other medicines, depending upon your location and the activities you have planned.

6. Get organized.  A few days before the wedding gather all the necessary paperwork, tickets, identification, and money you need for the trip.  Pack it into your honeymoon suitcase so you guarantee you won’t forget anything.

7. The great outdoors.  Pack the clothes you will need for any outdoor activities.  That could be hiking, biking or even just laying by the pool.  Don’t forget your running shoes! Not only are they practical but they are so comfy!

8. Toiletries. Designate one of your carry ons for toiletries.  Must haves: toothbrush, hairbrush, sunscreen, toothpaste, lotion, tampons, hair products and razor. Try to buy travel size when you can and pack well because you don’t want to be left searching for a store.

9. Contraception.  This is important if pregnancy is not on your immediate to do list.  Assure your prescriptions are filled and the proper contraception bought ahead of time.

10. Store the bling.  Bring something to store your rings in when you have to take them off.  For example, you might not want to wear your ring while snorkeling or doing any sort of strenuous activity.  Bring something you use to hide your ring inside your suitcase or hotel safe.

Happy Honeymooning!

Going on an island honeymoon is the dream of just about every newlywed couple. An island offers gorgeous beaches, exotic foods, and privacy. Many couples just assume that Hawaii is the best place to go and that is where they book their trip. While Hawaii just might be the best spot on Earth, there are multiple islands that make up the Hawaiian Islands, as well as many other amazing destinations you can look into. Here are our Top Five Island Honeymoon destinations!

#1 – Bora Bora, Society Islands

Bora Bora is in the Society Islands of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef and in the center of the island is the remnants of an extinct volcano with two peaks. A major tourist destination, the island has a permanent population of just under 9,000 inhabitants. There are many resorts that have sprung up over the last ten years, with Hotel Bora Bora being the first resort to feature over-water bungalows. You can get to Bora Bora on flights with Air Tahiti.

#2 –  Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea and is northwest of Barbados. It has a population over 174,000 and the official language spoken is English. What makes Saint Lucia so amazing are the pristine beaches, cobalt blue oceans, and the amazing lush green landscape inside the interior of the island, which includes a few golf courses. The island nation is home to some of the best resorts in the world, with plenty of water-sports activities and island tours to whet your appetite for adventure.

#3 – Bali, Indonesia

Bali is an island and the smallest of the provinces that make up Indonesia. It is described as a paradise with a spiritual nature, along with earning the reputation as having the best surf in the entire world. #4 – Manafaru, Maldives

Manafaru is one of the islands that makes up the Republic of Maldives. This small island is more like a giant resort, featuring 83 villas, half of which are perched over water. If Manfaru isn’t in your plans, look into other islands in Maldives. There are 300,000 inhabitants on the 185 islands, with the biggest sector of the economy being tourism. The islands feature many resorts, totaling over 92 as of 2007, many of which feature over-the-water bungalows for people to stay in.

One of the must-see places on Earth sits on this island in the form of Waimea Canyon. At 3,000 feet deep, Waimea Canyon is often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and is sure to take your breath away. Five Tips for Booking Hotel Venues

Looking for a property for a wedding can be difficult. If you’ve decided that you want to have your ceremony and/or reception at a hotel- you’re in luck! Most hotels are ready to accommodate weddings and large ceremonies, and in fact are one of the better venue options for weddings. There are, however, so many options and it’s very easy to get overwhelmed. We have a few tips to help guide you through it all, exclusively here on Bridal Hot List.

Define Before you Find

‘Hotel’ is a blanket term, and that covers a whole lot of different types of properties. This can include resorts, beach front properties, historic buildings, and boutiques. A wedding venue should reflect the couple, so narrow your options based on your couple personality. If you’re big readers or trivia buffs, look for a historic property in your nearest downtown area. If you’re laid back and like to relax together, a nice beach-y hotel near the water would make for a beautiful back drop. It can be easy to get wrapped up in going to whatever property is trendy, newest, or even closest, but in the long run you will want to find a place you are proud to tie the knot.

Have a Headcount

Have a ballpark number (within 15 people, max) of how many people will be attending. The more accurate you are with your numbers, the more accurate will be with their numbers. You may want to book the grand ballroom, but you may not be able to fill it. If that’s the case, there’s no point in spending extra money on it. You should also have an idea of how many out of town guests you have coming in who will need a hotel room. Some hotels will be able to work with you to factor in hotel room nights in addition to your wedding area. In dealing with hotels, I’ve found more often than not, bundling hotel rooms in with a meeting space can save you a bit of money.

Follow Up

If you start with looking online, shoot an e-mail to the sales manager saying you’re interested. If you’re going to properties to look around, ask for a business card. It’s smart to start building relationships with hotels as soon as possible to be able to get great rates. Hotel people tend to be loyal to clients they have histories with. If you’ve seen a property before or had a great time, mention it and they will absolutely appreciate a return customer! Plus, having a friend in the hotel business can definitely be beneficial to you. You can ask them for recommendations later on for trips and fun destinations.

Do a Test Run

If you’re in the finalizing process, it could be helpful to ask if you can do a walk-through of the property at the time of your wedding. If the lighting at night is awful, it will probably sway your mind. If the mornings are loud due to commutes or trains or anything else, you’ll want to know before you sign a check. If you can afford to, stay the night and make sure you absolutely love it. You may even be able to get a great discount if you explain that you are strongly considering having a ceremony there!

Negotiate

Rates are not always black and white. If you’re getting ready to draft contracts, work with the salesperson to get your rates as close to your budget as possible. Work with them on bundling to save costs, like having a few friends staying at the same hotel or even booking both the ceremony and reception in the same place. Work with their catering department and see if the property can lump all your expenses together. Little things you can help save you venue money overall. You can even ask for other discounts, such as AAA, student, or anything else you can come up with. Being creative can result in some surprising savings!

Five Budget Friendly Groom Gifts

Hello Bridal Hot List beauties! We love grooms here at BHL, and it’s our duty to help you show your appreciation for them too. The groom gift is an important way to show not only your appreciation for your man, but also create a statement based on who you are as a couple.  Flasks and personalized cufflinks are a classic for a reason and won’t go out of style, but these fun gifts will definitely score you some points for creativity. Plus, they’re all wallet-friendly (because you don’t need to be stressing over another wedding expense right now).

First Date in a Basket

If you’ve been together for a long time, it can be good to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Did you go out for a movie on your first date? Pick that movie up on blu-ray. Did you go to a concert? Pick up a live album or a greatest hits compilation. If you headed out to a bar, go see if that bar has shirts for sale. Recreate your first date in a gift bag that will make him remember falling in love with you. These can be done fairly inexpensively (around $50-$75, depending on how much you can add to your basket) and you can probably get everything you need at target or at least on amazon.com.

Puzzle

If your groom is more of a critical thinker, get a puzzle made of either a collage of the two of you or your engagement photos. Give him all the pieces jumbled up in a keepsake box and give him something to work on for a while. For bonus points, write him little notes or inside jokes on the back of the pieces. Shutterfly, or even Walgreens can turn your pictures into a puzzle for under $30.

Personalized Wine/Beer

If he’s a wine snob or a beer aficionado, celebrate that! Pick up a case of his favorite brew or a bottle he loves and get a special label made for him. It’s a sweet gift that he’s more than likely to share with you. You can get labels made online on sites like bottleyourbrand.com for around $10-$15. If you throw a few extra bucks at it, you can add pictures and make it super sentimental and sweet.

CYOA Book

Do you remember those choose your own adventure books from elementary school? Yeah, they’re still pretty awesome, and they’re surprisingly easy to write. Instead of creating a photo album, write a choose your own adventure book with photos of you both. Tell the story of how you met or how he proposed, doing a page for each milestone you overcame. Write it in second person, so the narrative is making decisions that affect where the story goes. At the end of each page, get the reader to go to one page to progress your story (turn to page four to go in for the first kiss, etc) and another page to go to (to blow her off, go to page twenty). Have one page set aside as a gag page and the rest as a linear story (just numbered and out of order like a true choose your own adventure book!). These can be done for under $50 on websites like Shutterfly or Picaboo, and you can use photos from facebook and flickr. You’ll score serious creativity points without breaking the bank, plus you’ll have a cool way to look back on pictures of you two over time.

The Ultimate 3-1-1 Travel Bag

Heading out of town for your honeymoon? If you’re flying, you’ll score some serious wife points by creating an awesome 3-1-1 travel bag. Remember, if you’re going to bring liquids on a plane one person gets one quart transparent bag and each liquid has to be in a three ounce container (it’s actually 3.4 ounces, or 100 ml but 3.4-1-1 doesn’t have the same ring to it).  Pick up tiny bottles of his favorite spirits to kickstart the honeymoon. Pick up some rum and ask for orange juice on the plane for a make-shift mai tai, or grab tiny tequila bottles to relax him before a long flight. Just make sure you get behind the wheel of the rental car when you land!

TLC’s Four Weddings Sneak Peek: September 5th

Thursdays are amazing. Not only is it one day closer to the weekend, but it is the day that TLC’s “Four Weddings” is on. And we’ve got the sneak peek for you.  It is the best way I like to spend  late Thursday nights. Drooling over the wedding details, and choosing which wedding I like the best. If you have not checked out this show yet, let me tell you a bit about it.  This show features four completely different brides who have never met, and attend each other’s weddings with one wedding being deemed “the winner” at the end. The brides rate the food, dress, venue, originality, and overall experience of each wedding, except for their own. At the end, all the scores of each bride are tallied, and the one with the highest score wins an all expenses paid honeymoon. Sounds like a fun-filled show right? If you love weddings as much as I do, then I think this show is for you.

On tonight’s episode the four brides are :  A high energy bride who has a grand and chic wedding,  a bride who loves the outdoors and brings a rustic feel to her special day, a bride who shares her Hollywood Glam wedding with her guests, and a bride who shares her Indian side with an Indian fusion wedding theme. Each of these brides share their unique style and taste on their wedding day. Which bride will be your favorite? Which bride’s detail’s will you like the best? Which dress will stand out the most? What ceremony will be the most touching? Which bride do you think will win? Make sure to check back on the site on Saturday to see what I thought of the  four brides and their weddings.

TLC’s Four Weddings airs Thursdays at 10/9c. So set your DVR’s, or watch it live tonight!
