Top Five Fourth of July Staples for Your Wedding

We LOVE the Fourth of July. The BBQs, the Fireworks, the day off (whoohoo!). Overall, it’s a fantastic time that everyone enjoys. Sound familiar? It’s got the same ‘good times all around’ vibe of a wedding! Why not merge the two a little to make your wedding that much more fun?

Pack a Punch

Add this to the buffet or to tables- make your famous punch! Punch is such a great BBQ drink that brings everyone back to childhood summers. Opt for something refreshing and red (that screams Fourth of July). If you want to do something a little more elevated, do some fruit punch with some freshly sliced lime wheels in it. It’s up to you whether or not you want to spike it.

Dine Picnic Style

If you love the BBQ aspect of the Fourth of July, trade out the silky linens for more picnic-y linens. A thicker crisp linen with some red or blue stripes screams Fourth of July fun and makes the table look much more inviting. Think gingham-chic and you’re all set! Bonus points if you get a similar (if not the same) fabric as a napkin to wrap your silverware.

Grill It Up

Want to give your guests the festive flavor of the Fourth? Have an on-site grill going! Even if it’s not necessarily hot dogs and hamburgers, you can throw steaks or veggie kabobs on the grill. Grills are fun, interactive, and create a fantastic flavor profile for anything that is thrown on there. Plus that smoky scent will get all your guests excited for food!

Add a Spark

If your wedding goes into the night, pass out sparklers when the sun starts to set. Little ones are easy to obtain, have a low risk of any damages or fires, and look amazing in photos. You and your fiance have clearly had some sparks in your relationship, why not spread the love? Its basically a tiny firework you can hold in your hand, how awesome is that?

Spark Something Bigger

This is a splurge, but if you can pull it off it will be legendary. There is a trend of having fireworks incorporated into the actual wedding festivities and it ALWAYS wows. It’s a big magical explosion that makes everyone feel like a child in awe of the sky. It’s a Fourth of July staple and it’s on the top of our wedding wish list. Yes, sparklers are an awesome homage, but actual fireworks completely blow everything else away.

Top Five Practical Wedding Gifts

Are you sick of buying blenders? Sure the new Ninja model is fantastic, but what if you want to gift something that goes a little farther than that? We’ve got a few things on our wish list that would be pretty awesome alternative gifts for the newlyweds (other than what’s left on their registry, of course!). We do suggest that you always check the registry first (afterall- that’s EXACTLY what the couple wants!), but if everything’s gone or not in your price range (go figure the four figure silverware wasn’t claimed first) then we’ve got some good gift ideas.

Get Them Going

One handy tool for the new couple? An awesome GPS device. Sure, most people use their phones right now, but it’s much safer to have a mounted GPS rather than looking down at your phone every so often. Plus they’re much less likely to have that awful “re-routing” message when your data comes in or out. It’s easy to find GPS devices for under $100, with fancier models running just over that.

Take Care of Date Night

If you’re anywhere near Southern California, Orlando, or really any major area that has a theme park spring for season passes! They may not be able to register for it, but it’s something awesome lots of couples love to have. Season passes are usually the price of one to four (tops!) visits to the park, so if they go once a month everyone got their money’s worth! It’s a great place for default dates, holidays, and playing hookie from work. You’ll be able to give them a great experience and they may even bring you home a funnel cake!

Personal Touches

If you’re looking for something original that you can do for under $100, put their face on something! There are awesome websites that are able to do personalized wine bottles, beer bottles, flasks, trinkets, you name it! Often times, discount sites like Groupon or LivingSocial will do deals too, so you’d be able to really get a deal. Something sweet like a bottle of wine with their picture, wedding date, and names could be a really sweet heartfelt gift. It’s a great keepsake from their wedding that they weren’t expecting, and bonus points if it’s good wine!

Join the Club

This is especially thoughtful if they’re just moving in together- get them a membership to Costco or Sam’s Club! If they’re starting a home or family together, a membership to a wholesale store could come in handy. Particularly if the newlyweds will be hosting parties together or just in general getting used to living together.

Foot The Bill

Pick up the tab for  some fun bills, like a Netflix or Hulu subscription. Take care of an Amazon Prime membership or a year’s worth of Audible. Fun little extras like that can be hard to find wiggle room for sometimes, but they’re always great to have. A new couple that has to take care of a wedding may be pinching pennies right now- help out their budget by taking care of some fun extras here or there.

Paddleboarding Laguna Beach Proposal

I love myself a good proposal story, and let me tell you, this one is a pretty good one! Better than good, its super romantic and has me tickled pink.  The first time I saw the images of this proposal, I could not imagine a more perfect proposal for these two love birds. I can go on and on about this incredible proposal, but I think its best if you view the beautiful images and read the story from the bride-to-be. I never thought that movie romances can happen in real life, but this one just did. It is even better than a romantic flick.  Enjoy!

Matt and Amanda’s Love Story told by the bride-t0-be…

Matt’s and my relationship has been a fairytale since it began one fateful day in the produce section of Sprouts Farmers Market. I went into the store to pick up a few produce items, and little did I know I would also pick up the man of my dreams. When I first spotted Matt, he was standing by the portabella mushrooms and I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. After shopping around for a bit in the produce section, and after many smiles and glances his way, Matt struck up a cute conversation with me about his frustration with the produce plastic bags. “Don’t you hate these things?” he said, with a smile. I was instantly enamored. After chatting amongst the fruits and vegetables for a bit and connecting over shared interests of hiking and nature, Matt asked for my number and offered to take me on a hike. After our momentous meeting, I called my best friend Lauren from the car and said “I think I just met my husband!” On our first date, Matt took me to Las Brisas in Laguna Beach for coffee and desert on the beautiful patio. It was nothing short of a romantic movie – the sound of the crashing waves, the bright and shining half-moon in the sky, the blissful walk on the sand, and the goosebump-inducing first kiss under the stars. Matt and I both say that we each knew on that first date that we had met the person we were going to marry.

And now flash forward two years to that initial gut feeling and wish becoming a reality, as we now prepare for our marriage! Like our beautiful meeting, Matt’s and my proposal story is nothing but romance, wonder and a dream come true!

Matt and I have been avid paddle-boarders and beach lovers for our entire relationship, and so I should have guessed that he would incorporate our love for paddling into his proposal. But I can honestly say I have NO idea he would actually propose to me out on a paddle-board on the ocean! The weekend after our second anniversary, Matt invited me out to the beach one morning to join him for a surprise. I had thought he might have just had a fun day planned for us – little did I know, he was planning to propose. So I drove down to Diver’s Cove in Laguna Beach – not far from where we had our first date – parked my car and walked to the beach. When I arrived at the top of the stairs that lead down to the ocean, the first thing I noticed was my paddle-board down on the sand surrounded by a giant heart made of rose petals! My heart stopped at that moment, and a wave of shock and excitement washed over me. As I approached my board, I saw a brand new wooden paddle Matt had ordered from Hawaii; it was hand carved wood and it was engraved to say “For my one love Amanda.” As I tried to catch my breath, I finally looked out upon the water to notice Matt out there already on his paddle-board, waving and gesturing for me to join him. I will never forget the big, bright smile he had on his face as he waved to me. I quickly put my stuff down, grabbed my board and new paddle, and started running into the surf. The waves were big that day so I was laughing trying to get out there while being so nervous. It felt like I had never paddled before because I was so nervous I could barely stand! Matt said he had the same feeling that day – with wobbly legs and a fast beating heart, we both struggled to stand, despite our years of practice!

And then, in the most spectacular moment of my life, right as I started to approach him on my board, he dropped down on one knee! He said the most thoughtful, meaningful and loving words and asked me to marry him right there on the water. It was incredible. The sun was beating down upon us, waves around us…it was a dream. He had the ring around his neck, strung around lanyard with a floatie device attached to it! After I of course said “YES!” and Matt put the ring onto my finger, he told me to turn around and wave to his friend Ryan, who had been hiding on shore to capture photos of the whole proposal! From that point, Matt said “ok, let’s go paddle!” and so we set off into the ocean and paddled down the coast of Laguna for hours (and even had a visit by some dolphins!); just the two of us – beaming with joy and soaking up the moment!  It was the most incredible, dream come true proposal by the most amazing, romantic man!

Top Five Tips for Planning Your Honeymoon

The best part of planning a party? The afterparty, of course! After your wedding wraps, keep the good times rolling with an awesome honeymoon. Don’t know where to start? We got you covered.

Decide on Old vs. New

Talk it over with the fiancé, and figure out if you want to revisit a place in the world that is special to you, or to explore a new corner of the globe. You may want to go back to the place where you had your first romantic getaway, or go to a dream destination that you haven’t been to yet. While most people tend to try out new places, there can be some stability in going somewhere you’ve gone before. Vegas, for example, can be a great place for both parties and romantic getaways. It’s pretty decent year round and there are always some deals for it. Places like New York City or Miami need a little more thought- they’re not always perfect year round and you’d want to do some research before heading out there.

Define Your Time

Consider what you’d want to do on your honeymoon- are you an adventurous pair that would want to jump off of the faces of mountains? Do you want to eat your way through a foodie paradise? Do you plan on lounging around by the pool? Even if a city sounds like a blast, think about how you want to spend your time. New York City may be fantastic for culture, but if you’d rather hang out on the beach it may not be the dream destination for this trip. Just remember- this won’t be the only vacation you go on! It’s just your first as a married couple. Don’t feel pressured to go to one place because you’ve always wanted to- go where you feel you’d enjoy your time the best! And if that’s Myrtle Beach for the tenth time, so be it.

Plan Before You Pack

Once you have a basic location, it’s good to know what kind of travel to book. Certain locations and areas of the world will be able to do all-inclusive packages, so you don’t need to worry about doing food or any random activities. This is very common in resort towns like Cancun, Cabo, and Playa del Carmen. It’s good to think about how you want to vacation- do you want to explore a city, or do you want to really sit back and relax for a while? Think about whether or not you want to do an all-inclusive package or piece your trip together yourself.

Check Your Dates

Do research on sites like TripAdvisor and the city’s tourism website to find out what times of the year are best to go. Find out if Fridays and Saturdays are super crowded and busy, or if it’s more of a Thursday-Friday town. If you’re planning on doing museums or beaches or even nightlife, think about what kind of experience you want to have. Cross reference your dates as much as you can so you won’t be surprised by long lines or crazy crowds at any point.

Ask for Help

Hit the blogs looking for travel tips and tricks for your destination. It can be a good idea to check out local hot spots through Yelp, check out hotels on TripAdvisor, and if you’re leaving the country, look up any travel tips for getting through customs. Some countries may surprise you by having entry or exit fees that you may not have known about before. You can also ask your friends on social media if they’ve been to where you’re heading and ask for advice.  Do some digging just to help anticipate any issues or questions you may have.

“Say Yes To The Dress: Atlanta” premieres  tonight at 9/8c. So set your DVR’s, or watch it live tonight!

Three Tactful Ways to Say “No” to Wedding Guests

Weddings are fantastic- but keep in mind, if you’re the bride then it’s your show! It can be hard to say ‘no’ to your wedding guests, but at the end of the day your word should be final. We’ve got tactful ways to get out of certain scenarios.

When a Guest Wants to Bring An Extra Person

Maybe your brother rsvp’d as a single, but suddenly wants his new girlfriend (or worse- his old frat buddy) to be his plus-one. Yikes! What do you do? Simply explain to him that the meal count and chairs have already been locked in. Even if he says that his plus one won’t be hungry, he really can’t get around not having anywhere for his plus one to sit. If you want to extend a sweet gesture, you can tell him that if anyone suddenly can’t make it you can give him a heads up, but say that the guest list is pretty much locked in.

When an Out-of-Town Guest Wants to Crash on Your Couch

You’re going to be busy enough with your own wedding craziness to deal with any couch surfers- do NOT put the burden of hosting out of towners on top of everything! Instead of ok-ing everyone that wants a free place to crash, just explain that you don’t have the space to house any out-of-towners. You can say that if you let one person crash, you’d need to let everyone crash and you simply don’t have room. You can say that you’re using your house to house a lot of the wedding craziness so the whole place is going to be a mess. You can also suggest nearby hotels for any guests who may need it. Just be firm- you really don’t need any friends raiding your fridge while you’re planning a wedding!

When a Guest Wants to Bring Kids (and it’s not a kid-friendly wedding)

Sure, kids are cute and sweet, but weddings aren’t always where a kid has the most fun. If you’re throwing a wedding that’s aimed at an adults-only crowd, it can be hard to explain to adults not to bring their little ones. If anyone’s trying to bring their little ones to the grown up’s table, simply explain to them that the event will be a more mature event and that it may not be kid-paced. Parents understand how a kid’s attention span works and may take that as it won’t be engaging enough for younger ones. You can also mention that there will be liquor and you wouldn’t want any unattended drinks to end up in the hands of any children (mai tais always look fun to younger kids…). Safety is always a priority for parents, and you want to frame this as you looking out for their best interest.

Top Five Tips for Seating Charts

Seating charts can be a much harder task to take on than you realize- you need to weigh out who can sit with who, where to put kids, and who needs to be closest to you. It can be pretty hectic! We’ve got some tips to help you keep your cool while you figure out where everyone can go.

Make a Model

It can help to physically put people where they need to be. Print out the layout of the seating area (if you’re doing your ceremony at a hotel they usually have pre-made layouts of where tables will go) and use post-it tabs or push pins to place people. Being able to physically see where everyone will go will give you some clarity and make it easier to move people around.

Make a “No-No” List

Do you have some people who REALLY can’t be seated near each other? It happens! Look over your guest list and highlight anyone who needs to sit somewhere… specific. You can place those people first so that you know there won’t be any unnecessary drama or fighting. Don’t feel like you can’t invite people because they may have issues with other guests, just keep them separated and enjoy yourself. After all, the wedding’s about love and harmony. Keep the peace the best way you can.

Consider Foot Traffic

Are you having a buffet? A drink bar? Any sort of thing where guests will need to be getting up and walking around? Keep that area a little extra clear. If you can foresee a path that your guests will need to be taking, maybe have tables scooched a little more out of the way. Better yet, keep people who are younger and able to move at those tables. You shouldn’t put your 80 year old grandmother at a table where she would need to be moving her chair out of the way for other guests.

Plan Kids Accordingly

Think about any little ones that will be in attendance. Are they going to want to play together? Are their parents going to want to keep them nearby? Kid’s tables can be great to keep all the little ones entertained, but you wouldn’t want their parents to be stressed out trying to watch their kids from across the room. Figure out what kind of parents and kids are going to be there and think about what would work best for them. Just be sure to stock that table with extra napkins for messier little ones.

Plan for Yourself

Think about who you want closest to you. Do you want to do a sweetheart table? Or a big wedding party table? Maybe a table with the parents and the newlyweds? Think about what YOU want most. After all, it’s your wedding! We do suggest that you have your maid of honor as close as possible for anything you may want or need. She’s your wingwoman for a reason- keep her close!
