Welcome Guest Gift Bags

Are you having a destination wedding in your own city? You probably have out of town guests, and a great idea is to create welcome guest bags. These are a great way to make your guests feel right at home!

  • What to include in the Welcome Bags? Something as simple as a water bottle and your favorite cookies or chocolate bars. You can add items such as a local map and city guide, a wedding itinerary, travel items which guests may have forgotten,(toothbrush, nail clipper and file, hair brush, hair spray, etc), a list of your favorite local restaurants or shops, and anything else which will make your guests feel at home. You can also add something which represents your city or state. For example, for California, you can add a bottle of beach sand, or sea shells.
  • Delivery of the Welcome Bags: Prior to your guests arrival, you can drop off the welcome bags at the hotel where guests are staying. This can be easily arranged with the hotel staff. When guests check in, they will be given their welcome bags. Your guests will feel so special when they receive their welcome bag. I know I would!
  • How many Welcome Bags do you need? You need just one welcome bag per hotel room, however its a good idea to make extras in case. There may be more than one family or friends sharing a room.

Your  guests will know that you took the time to think about them while they are visiting your city. Your guests will feel happy and ready to enjoy a fabulous time at your wedding!

How to Prepare for the Big Day

Is your wedding day coming up? It is an exciting time in ones’ life, however it can also be stressful at the same time. There are a lot of details and things to get done before the big day.

However it does not mean it has to be all stress and no fun.  Here are some ways that you can prepare for your wedding day:

1. Make a massage appointment: This is something you can do as a couple or as the bride, you can do with your girlfriends. The day before the wedding is a good time to go, so you can relax and enjoy some pampering. You earned it! Some spa places offer lunch to be provided to you, so you can make a day of it too! Go in the morning, relax in the hot jacuzzi, take a mist shower, enjoy the steam room, and then get your spa treatment. You can then have lunch and relax. This is a perfect way to relax your mind, body and soul. Make an appointment today!

2. Eat well: The day before and the day of, ensure you eat a good meal. This is not the time to try something new at the Mexican restaurant. You want to eat light, healthy, and wholesome. The last thing you need to worry about is to getting sick. You want to enjoy your day to the fullest! Some brides, (due to nerves and having so much to do the day of), forget to eat the day of the wedding. This is not a good time to starve yourself. Make sure to have breakfast and lunch, and then at the wedding eat dinner. If you are getting married at a hotel and getting ready there, this is easily arranged by the hotel. You can order room service and have it delivered to you, no worries! If you are getting ready somewhere else, just have someone like your maid of honor or bridesmaid to pick up lunch for you. The main thing is to just make time to eat, so that way you can plenty of energy to party with your guests! Also drink lots of water and keep yourself hydrated, (especially during summer months). Eat up!

3. Get some Z’s: A good night’s sleep is key. They say that a good night’s sleep really affects your mental and physical outcome of the next day. This might seem logical, however many couples do not get a good night sleep the night before their big day. They are either up late working on last minute details, partying (which really should wait untl your big day), or just nerves not allowing sleep. Go to bed at a decent time and get your full eight hours of sleep. Most brides start their day as early as 7am! yikes! What might help is to spend the night with your girlfriends and or sister/family members. This way you are not alone and the nerves can calm down by being with those who care for you. It also makes it a fun night to be together!

4. Take a deep breath:  Before you walk down that aisle, give yourself a few minutes to relax and take a few breaths. Deep breath in, and out, and repeat. I know it seems the obvious thing to do, but believe me, it helps!

Remember to relax, eat and sleep well!! Now go on and have a fabulous wedding day!!

St. Regis Wedding from Paul Barnett Photography

What a better way to start the week than with a look into a romantic wedding set at the gorgeous St. Regis Resort  in Monarch Beach, California.  Melting over the plush flower arrangements, a phenomenal dove release, and lavish gifts for the guests, this wedding stops me in my tracks. I can not get over all the fabulous details of this wedding!  Effortlessly planned and designed by Scott Corridan, where modern meets vintage with hint of romance, this wedding has me head over heels. A perfect romantic affair!

Paul Barnett Photography captures all the love and sweetness of this wedding. If you are a hopeless romantic like I am, then you will absolutely love the images.

Words from the gorgeous bride…

We chose the St Regis after touring 20-30 venues from Santa Barbara to San Diego. I had a long checklist, and the St Regis came the closest to meeting it. After 10 months of planning, 7 trips to the venue, and of course our weekend of events, we were thrilled with our choice. The location was stunning, the food was excellent, and the service was unbeatable!

We had 85 guests, most of which traveled from Canada. They were greeted at their accomodations with a welcome package from Mark and I which included a hand written note,  a timeline for the weekend, a list of things to do in the area, cookies from a local bakery called Three Hearts Bake Shop (which people are STILL talking about), and a few goodies to remember the event including personalized m&m’s, wine charms, and some SPF lotion to protect from that hot California sun. We chose not to do traditional wedding favors.

We chose Tiffany blue, white, and pearl white as our wedding colors. And they came together beautifully. I guess if you had to give our wedding a theme it would considered modern traditional vintage romance.

We were married on July 7th at 6 o’clock on the evening in the botanical gardens. The night before the wedding our guests enjoyed a cocktail party, and the morning after, a one of a kind St. Regis brunch. Our ceremony was short. About 30 minutes. As guests left the ceremony, they were greeted by wait staff with champagne, and escorted to the botanical lawn where they enjoyed a cocktail hour, as we took our photos. Dinner started at 8, and the night concluded around 2am. We did not want to have any gaps in the day for guests left with nothing to do. So it transitioned smoothly from beginning to end.

We had many surprises for our guests including a 1962 white rolls Royce, a string quartet including a harpist, hand written vows, tears of joy tissues, sandalwood fans, a dove release, tray passed pashminas for the ladies, and cigars for the gentleman, a dress change, choreographed first dance, white Havaianas for dancing, and a shuttle ride home to prevent drinking and driving.

We also had certain touches that only had meaning to some. We had a candle memorial for all our relatives that had passed. It was just a small glass cylinder filled with water, and a candle, with the names of our relatives engraved. If you didn’t know about it, you probably wouldn’t have even noticed it. Each guests menu also had their name printed on it, and the kids menus had pictures and activities for coloring, complete with crayons.

I was very specific about everything at our wedding, including the food. I insisted that all of the food including the salad be stacked. Guests also enjoyed a variety of tray passed hors deovres during cocktail hour. Dinner began with a caprese salad with olive tapenade, followed by a crab cake appetizer. The main course was a choice of Barmundi Sea Bass, Parmesan and Mustard crusted Chicken, or a Petite Filet. All mains were served stacked with honey glazed carrots, broccoli, spinach, potato gratin, and a jumbo prawn. We concluded dinner with champagne, and a desert of a handmade edible white & milk chocolate bowl filled with vanilla bean ice cream, an assortment of seasonal berries, and a raspberry purée. Topped with a caramel peanut brittle.

Our cake was a 3 tier round cake with plain white fondant. Each tier was separated by a floral insert. What was unique about it was that only a small portion  of the cake was actually cake. The rest was a form covered in fondant. We wanted a cake to display, and to do the traditional cutting of the cake, but didn’t want to serve cake to our guests, or waste the cake.

Our florals were one of the biggest line items in our budget. I wanted flowers everywhere!!!! My bouquet was so heavy I could barely carry it, but it was so amazing! We used 3 species of orchids, hydrangea, lilies, roses, and calla lilies, all white, with hints of summer green. We had pommodor balls lining the aisle, and well as scrolls of petals. All the guests tossed petals during our recessional. And the gazebo was covered in arrangements as well. Each guests place setting had a single orchid bloom tucked into their napkin, many of which ended up in the hair of our female guests, which was fun. Our centre pieces were show stopping. The were enormous 3×1 foot glass vases topped with huge replicas of my bouquet. The vases were filled with water, and there were white orchids coiled inside.

Our first dance was Kiss to build a dream on by Louis Armstrong.

We skipped out on the traditional bouquet, and garter toss, as it wasn’t really our style. We kept the speeches and toasts short and sweet, and they were concluded by a multimedia presentation by my brother that included video messages from our family and friends that weren’t able to attend the wedding.

I wore a champagne lace strapless Rivini with a modified sweetheart neckline, an Erin Cole Birdcage veil, Miriam Haskell, and Lagos pearls, and Christian Louboutin peeptoe pumps. My girls wore asymmetrical Lynn Lugo dresses in Tiffany blue, and Pink Valentinos. And Mark wore a Grey Canali suit with subtle Tiffany blue pinstripes, and Gucci shoes.

The day was designed, organized and carried out by Scott Corridan, captured by Paul Barnett, of Paul Barnett Photography, and filmed by Curtis Heyne of Living Cinema, all along with their incredibly wonderful teams.

It was an absolutely perfect day, with incredible vendors, and the best husband a girl could ask for.

Top Five Best Man Duties

Last week, we had a post on the Top Five Maid of Honor Duties. This weekend, which is all about the groom and the groomsmen, we are going to check out what the best man duties are. When it comes to these duties, some are similar but some are also very different when compared to the duties of the maid of honor.  The groom chooses his best man based on certain qualities which he sees fit. He is going to marry the love of his life and wants the right person to stand next to him when this happens.

Here are the top five best man duties:

  • Party Planner: Plan and coordinate the Bachelor party. You can plan this with some of the groomsmen and make it an unforgettable night! However, listen to what the groom wants for his party, and do not plan what YOU may like. Not all groom’s wants a Vegas, Hang-over weekend.
  • Travel Agent: Confirm honeymoon travel reservations, and make sure the tickets are in a place where the groom can find them. You also want to verify the arrival and depature time of the transportation to and from the venue. Have transportation ready for when the bride and groom depart the venue and head to their hotel or honeymoon.
  • Social Guy: Greet guests when they arrive at the wedding. Dance with the guests, including the bride, the bridesmaids, maid of honor, and mother of the bride and groom. You will probably be asked to give a toast to the newlyweds, so make sure to write and practice it prior to the wedding day.
  • Be Responsible: Attend the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, formalwear fittings, and all events related to the wedding. On the day of the wedding be responsible for your own formalwear.  Give out payments on the day of the wedding to the vendors or the officiant. A very important responsibility is holding the bride’s ring until the exchange of the rings.
  • Personal Assistant: Assist the groom with phone calls, errands, helping him with whatever is needed. Make sure the boutonniere’s arrive and the groom and the groomsmen have their on and ready for photos.

Top Five Groomsmen’s Duties

A couple weeks ago, we did a post on the Top Five Bridesmaid’s Duties. So, we thought to make this weekend all about the groom and his groomsmen. Today we will take a look at what the groomsmen’s duties are at the wedding. Guys, if you want to impress the ladies, here is what you got to do!

  •  Personal Assistant: Just like the bridesmaids assisting the bride, you will assist the groom with errands, phone calls, and anything else that he may need that day. Possibly, grabbing him lunch and a drink to make sure he eats and is having a good day before he says ” I do”.
  • Be Social:  This is the time to mingle, hang out,  and have a great time with the guests. Since you will be ready way before the girls are, be at the ceremony one hour before the ceremony starts, and greet the guests as they walk in. Ask a bridesmaid to dance and get on that dance floor and have fun.  When guests are in line at the bar, or the buffet, say hello.
  • Be Responsible: Guys, you are on your own today, so don’t rely on your girlfriend or wife to make sure you have your tux/suit ready. In addition, you want to make sure you have your shoes and socks.
  • Stay Cool: This is one of  the most important days of  your good friend’s life, so you want to make sure he is calm and cool. If you are already married, possibly give him some advice and how he can prepare before he stands up at the alter waiting for his bride.
  • Guest’s Guide: Be prepared to help guests find their way to the ceremony, and escort them to their seats. You may also be asked a very popular question of the location of the restrooms,so make sure you know where they are.

Pretty easy right? Enjoy the day and have an amazing time!

Yes, it is possible.  A great way to do this, is at the dinner table.  You are inviting your guests to essentially a huge dinner party, and want to use your best chinaware. The Right and Wrong Way for a Guy to Propose

You Can't Go Wrong With A Private Beach in Hawaii for a Marriage Proposal!

You Can’t Go Wrong With A Private Beach in Hawaii for a Marriage Proposal!

Oftentimes I’m asked how I proposed to my wife by younger friends looking to do something unique, amazing, over-the-top and totally memorable. It’s at that point I stop them and let them know it isn’t about making a huge splash and impressing all of her friends. A good proposal, wedding and marriage is about doing what is special for you two and nobody else. What really gets me is that guys won’t consider all the factors that should go into a good proposal! Remember, this is supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, but that doesn’t mean it has to contradict my first statement. There’s a fine line to walk, so for the guys, let’s look at a few right ways and wrong ways to pop the big question.

Do: Consider what is special for you both. If you both want to be surrounded by friends and family during a proposal, then do it at a big family gathering or event.

Don’t: Never upstage someone else. If you are at someone’s sweet 16 birthday party or (I shudder at this one) someone else’s wedding, this is *their* time and not yours. Make it special for you two without taking all the attention for yourself.

Do: Consider the setting and the timing. You’ll want to make sure it’s a spot that’s special for you both, whether that means it’s a place that you’ve visited and have fond memories of, or a place you two have always wanted to visit together, but never have.

Don’t: Never go to a place where either of you have bad memories, or have memories of having been there with an ex. If you decide to take a trip and spring the question then, make it a place neither of you have traveled to before, but always have wanted to visit.

Do: Tell her the reasons you want to get married, why she’s so special and why she’s the one. This is one the few times we’re really expected to pour our hearts out fellas, so buck up and get it done. Chances are you’ll be so nervous you’ll not make much sense, but just speak from the heart, tell her what makes her so special to you and let it be very natural, special and from the heart.

Don’t: Don’t try to do something ultra-rehearsed, don’t do something ridiculous like make a public scene and start reciting Shakespeare, just be yourself and not something you’ve never been.

So there you go guys, some basic tips to get you started on the right way and perhaps to avoid the wrong way, with asking that special someone to be yours for the rest of your life. Good luck!

Top Five Reasons to Have Lighting at Your Wedding

Do you want to make your wedding an unforgettable event? Lighting is one of the ways that can make your wedding go from dull to absolutely stunning!  We asked lighting expert Tara Sorochman, from Invisible Touch Events, to tell us why lighting is a must!

  • DANCING: Lighting gives your guests a reason to dance. Dance floor lights bring energy, life, and fun to the party. It makes people want to celebrate and enjoy themselves. This is such an important factor when it comes to entertaining your guests.
  • MOOD/TONE:  The way your lighting is handled will ultimately set the mood & tone of the room. By changing the lighting throughout the night, it will bring out changes in the feelings of your guests. For example, nobody wants bright lights in their faces when they are sitting at their table. However, when you dim the lights it makes the room more intimate and allows your guests to enjoy you and those sitting around your table.
  • DECOR: You want to be able to highlight the beautiful decor you have at your wedding. For example, adding pinspots and up-lighting to your florals makes the room have a vibrant feel. The lights allow for people to notice how amazing and detail oriented the decor is.
  • FOCUS: Lighting allows your guests to notice when important events are taking place throughout the night. For instance, during the “Father/Daughter & Mother/Son Dance”, you have the opportunity to spot light the dance on the dance floor. The spot light can also be great for when you are coming in for your Grand Entrance, and all eyes are on you and the bridal party.
  • PHOTOS: Photos are what you have to look back on, and you want your photos to accentuate all of the small details that created those exceptional moments. For example, a beautiful photo might be one during the night when you have your first dance, and in the background you see the gorgeous stars, your names in lights, and you in the spotlight.
