Top Five Tips for Picking Out a Wedding Dress

You said yes to the proposal, are you ready to say ‘yes’ to a dress? The wedding dress is the most important piece of clothing a woman can wear, so you need to go in prepared. Are you ready to go shopping for the best dress of your life? You will be with these five tips.

Start Lean

It may be tempting to not eat the morning of, but you’ll need to be sharp and have lots of energy! Getting in and out of dresses all day can take much more energy than you realize. We all get that same not-fun stress right before we have to try on lots of clothes, it’s totally normal. Try some greek yogurt with fruit in the morning to get energy that won’t weigh you down or make you feel sluggish. If you’re going for extra points, grab fruits like blueberries that help sharpen your brain power and help you focus.

Know your Body

Think about your favorite dresses that you own and what you like about them. Maybe you love flowy loose pieces that make you feel romantic and light. Maybe you love your legs and like to show them off. Figure out what you love about your body and what you love to wear, and go with that! Tell the store associates what you like to wear, and be firm about it.

Have a Vision

If you have an idea based on what kind of dresses you love, go for it! You may not find the perfect dream dress immediately, so hold out and be sure you find something that you love. Don’t settle and don’t give in and just buy the first dress that fits. When you’re tired and getting zipped into what feels like the hundredth dress and it’s not even 2PM, don’t give in! Narrow your search down to dresses that have the specific elements you’re looking for. Don’t just try on a dress to try it on- that’s a surefire way to get burnt out quickly.

Bring a Buddy

Your mom, your mother-in-law-to-be, your maid of honor, your bridesmaids, whomever (as long as it’s not the groom!) can go. Try to keep it to three or under so the store doesn’t get too crowded, but you really can’t buy a wedding dress alone. You’ll need someone to help you in and out of outfits, to give feedback, and to help keep you focused.

Take Pictures

Document the day! It’ll be great to look back on, plus you get the benefit of knowing how each dress you try on looks in photos. Sometimes a dress can feel great on, but looks like a dryer sheet in a photo. You absolutely don’t want that. Ever. Plus, if you don’t go home with your dream dress immediately, you can go through what you did try on to see what kinds of dresses and cuts you liked.

Lovely words from the bride…

A California take on an English Garden Party….  Sophisticated.Rustic.Romantic

It was a late summer day, not a cloud in the sky.  The bride awoke early in her hotel room and “Halo” by Beyonce – the song that had always reminded her of her fiancé – played as she finished pouring her heart out onto the paper she’d be reading her vows from later that day.  As she gazed out the window, she worried about the sun and the increasing heat; would the guests melt during the ceremony, would the flowers be ok, would her designer get everything perfect…?

A knock on the door broke her from her anxious thoughts as hair, makeup, and photographers bustled into the room.  As the music played, and the busyness in the room increased, the bride didn’t have a moment left for worrying.  Soon, the group descended the elevator of the Island Hotel in Newport Beach and entered the waiting limo.

Upon arrival, the bride giggled as she passed the 7 foot, amazingly lifelike poster board of her and her fiancé holding a welcome sign as she was quickly escorted inside the bridal suite of the Oak Creek Golf Club.   Custom vintage signs located throughout the property added rustic charm while also directing guests.  At the ceremony site outside, guests enjoyed lemon-mint, melon, and coffee flavored granitas from an Italian Granita Stand, took mini Polaroid pictures to take home and to pin to the couples custom picture board (used in lieu of a traditional Guest Book) while they listened to the melodious notes of the ukulele playing acapella group.

The Officiant took his place under the second beautifully lush arch along the aisle.  The aisle was decorated with rose petals in the shape of the bride and groom’s monogram that their wedding designer created.  Ladies took parasols as everyone was invited to take their seats.  The acapella singers switched to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as the groom walked down the aisle and the bridal party followed.  Emotions peaked and tears began to flow as the singers once again switched songs – this time to “Going to the Chapel”, and the bride’s father took her by the arm to escort her out the door and to their long walk towards the aisle.

Though her custom made silk cathedral length veil was drawn over her face, once the bride was in view of the gorgeous ceremony site and her seated guests, she could see clearly that her worries had been in vain!  Her designer had thought of everything and executed it perfectly!  Everything was beautiful, the temperature was perfect, and the waves of open white parasols made for amazing and artistic photos.  Her guests smiled expectantly as she approached, the harmony of the acapella singers was spot on, and at last her eyes met her groom’s.  Her veil was lifted and the couple beamed at one another with ear to ear smiles as if it were the very first time.  At that moment, the bride was filled with happiness and the crowd seemed to fade away.

At the commencement of the ceremony, fast paced, wedding-themed Persian music boomed through the speakers (an ode to the bride’s half Persian Culture).  The couple’s Persian DJ, Taraneh was notorious for getting guests to their feet and this was no exception!  Everyone cheered as the couple made their way back down the aisle and to the waiting golf cart that swept them away to hidden romantic spots for picture taking.

Meanwhile, guests were ushered to the Cocktail Hour overlooking the Reception site.  A charcuterie table abounded with cheeses, meats, and breads, matched only by the overflowing fruit table nearby.  Waiters weaved through the crowd with plentiful and unique passed appetizers like shots of tomato bisque with bites of grilled cheese and a tuna tartar over wasabi chips.   An iced tea and lavender lemonade stand was a clever addition, perfect for the late August afternoon.

Close by was a lounge area beautifully decorated with pictures of the couple in gorgeous frames, bird cages spilling out with flowers, and benches decorated with hand sewn pillows custom made for the event.  The guests ate, drank, and were merry as a Persian violinist and drummer serenaded them.

Soon it was time for the guests to head to the reception area as the DJ announced that the bride and groom would be making their way out.     Four rows of long Amalfi wood tables covered the grass, each with custom burlap and lace silverware holders and runners copiously decorated with candles and vintage bird cages of all different sizes spilling out with an assortment of white flowers and mosses in varying shades of green.   Large market umbrellas each adorned with several ivory paper lanterns provided both shade before the sun went down and romantic lighting once it set.

The music momentarily fell silent as the DJ announced the couple and then reared up as hand in hand, they entered the dance floor.  It was now the moment the couple had been preparing for….  Their song played and the couple broke out into their choreographed waltz.  As the song approached its end and the bride was dipped by her groom, the music suddenly changed to a traditional Persian song, called Baba Karam and the couple suddenly grabbed their props – a hat and scarf for him and a jangly gypsy skirt for her – and began their surprise custom choreographed dance.  Their guests went wild with laughter and cheers.  The couple was so happy they had successfully pulled it off, there was nothing left to do, but to relax and enjoy the night.

The market string lighting overhead lit the dance floor as everyone began to dance the night away.  After dinner, guests were treated to both a lavishly custom decorated dessert table and candy stand.  Each was dazzlingly decorated and plentifully supplied with sweets!  The dessert table which was custom built from pallet wood for the event added to the night’s rustic, romantic charm.  The dessert table was covered with specialty tarts, mini pies, cupcakes, a macaroon tower, and both a bride’s and a groom’s cake.  The bride wanted to surprise her groom and did so with a cake in the shape of a beach volleyball that sat on a platform decorated like the beach – an ode to his favorite pastime!  The candy table had several of the couple’s favorite candies and take away bags providing guests a second favor to take home.  Guests toasted the couple with custom signature cocktails and they proceeded to live happily ever after.

Five Ways to Make Your Bride Smile on Your Wedding Day

You don’t have to go through a wedding yourself to know that a wedding day is one of the most stressful occasions a person will have in their lifetime. Between coordinating all the friends and family that attend, to working with a wedding coordinator to make sure all the details are set, it can be very hectic. That is why a lot of couples don’t really remember their wedding day or have very fond memories, as all the work that goes into it takes away from the fun. As the groom, you want to make sure your bride is going to be as happy as possible because she has been thinking about this day since she was a little girl. Even if you have a smooth wedding, thanks to a talented coordinator, great DJ, amazing caterer, and solid venue, you should still find some ways to make your bride smile on your wedding day. Here are five handy tips to make sure you keep her happy and make her smile!

Tip #1: Constant Flattery

Naturally flattery can go a long way but make sure you are constantly mentioning how beautiful she looks, how amazing her dress is, and all the little things you know went into making her look so amazing. You can complement her hair, her dress, her accessories, or even her shoes. Just be sure to make her aware that you have noticed all the things she has done to make herself the most beautiful woman in the world. Also don’t forget to reminder her that she is always beautiful but today she looks especially gorgeous. She’ll smile and feel confident!

Tip #2: Loosen Up and Talk

Many grooms are nervous themselves on the wedding day and those feels can definitely be infectious. While some emotions are good to spread around, nerves are not one of them. Make sure you are not showing your nerves, or even mentioning how nervous you might be. Try to be confident, cool, calm, and collected during the wedding day. That way, your bride will know she can lean on your as a partner. Talk to her, engage in meaningful conversation, and enjoy the time you are together for one of the most memorable days of your lives together.

Tip #3: Bring a Small Gift

Nothing will be more welcome that a small surprise gift that you can share together. Get her something small and ideally very sentimental. Perhaps it is a business card from the restaurant you had your first date on, or a print out of the first email she sent to you – whatever it is, make sure it is small, sentimental, and shared between the two of you only. A little gift like this will show that you went above and beyond thinking ahead just for her and make her feel that much more special.

Tip #4: Special Catering

While she might know the menu for dinner and dessert you can always work out an arrangement with the caterer or dessert specialist to bring something just for her that you know she will love. Perhaps it’s her favorite side disk, or a special dessert that she will love even more than the wedding cake you bought. Either way, it proves that you are thinking of her needs and that she gets something especially for her!

Tip #5: Surprise Ending

One thing you might want to consider is a little surprise ending to the night when the wedding reception concludes. One really sharp move is to call around and find a decent limousine to rent to take you from the wedding to wherever you will be spending your first night together as husband and wife. Some limo companies enforce a 6-hour minimum rule, but if you mention that it is your wedding night and just need a quick ride, many will be willing to lower that minimum to just two hours. That way, your and your bride can leave the wedding in style and take a romantic drive in a nice limo. Nothing is more sure to give your bride a smile as she leaves her wedding!

Sneak Peek of TLC’s “I Found the Gown” Season 3 Premiere

We cant stop saying over and over again at BHL headquarters.  Besides the amazing news that the weekend is here, we have some other great news to share. TLC’s, “I Found the Gown”, is back for season three, and we could not be any happier! This means BrideDay on TLC just got more bridal, which means we are pretty happy.

This show is amazing and full of surprises. If you have not ever seen the show, well let us tell you all about it, and hopefully you will get hooked just like we did. This show features a lovely married couple, Rick and Leslie DeAngelo (we LOVE them!), who own VOWS, a discount bridal boutique in Boston, Massachusetts.  They provide brides high-end designer gowns with very affordable price tags. Selling these deeply discounted bridal gowns for 50-80% off retail is no easy task. Rick and Leslie search high and low in factory attics, boutique back rooms, and department store warehouses across the world to score these sought-after looks for less. Each episode will follow their journey to find these amazing treasures, and then back at the shop to share them with three brides and the VOWS consultants.

On tonight’s season three premiere: VOWS is having their annual Gown Rush sale and hundreds of brides flock to the store for the big event! It will be a bit of a challenge and some planning for these brides, as there are over 800 gowns to choose from, and very little time to spare. So, each bride must make a decision today or risk walking out the door empty handed.  How many brides will find the gown of their dreams for a discounted price? Tune in tonight to see it all!

Top Five Tips for a Drama-Free Bridal Party

If it’s your big day, you shouldn’t have to stress over anything at all. Unfortunately, one big stress some brides have is drama within the bridal party. We don’t want you to have to go through any unnecessary drama though! We’ve got tips on keeping the peace between your girls so you can have a peaceful wedding.

Bond When You Can

If there’s any awkward tension in the group, do what you can to diffuse it with some good old fashioned quality time. Do a Sunday bridal party brunch with manis and pedis, or wake up early to take a hike together. Group activities can create new, fun memories that diffuse awkward vibes. The more time your bridal party spends together, the more time they have to forge new friendships!

Create Conversations

As much as we’d all love to be social butterflies and float effortlessly through conversation, it’s a difficult skill to master! Give your girls a hand by creating conversations for everyone to participate in. If you have everyone over and spend the whole night talking office gossip, your college friends and hometown BFF’s may not feel included. An easy way to create conversation is to go see a movie, then go out for drinks and dessert afterward. Everyone will be able to participate and stay on the same page.

One on One

If you’re noticing any tension between any of your bridesmaids, pull them aside. If you see something, say something. Talk to each person one on one to try and see where any issues may lie. It may be a little much to go straight into a sit down confrontation, so create a safe environment where no one feels judged. Explain your needs and that you don’t want any tension on your special day, and emphasize that you want everyone to have a great time.

Call Rank

If you’re still seeing anyone butting heads after having a sit down, step up and remind them who’s getting married. It is your day, and you deserve everything you want. Tell everyone straight up that you don’t want any drama and to put their egos aside for the sake of the party. There’s nothing wrong with asking this of your friends- if they really are your friends, they’ll listen.

Ask your Maid of Honor

Still getting nowhere? Don’t have time to actually take care of any egos that may not be meshing well? Get your maid of honor on it. She’s your right-hand lady for a reason, afterall! Be gentle when you’re handling other people’s feelings, but be firm. This will affect your special day, so you should have final say. Trust her to de-tense any weird feelings and keep the peace between the bridesmaids.

Follow our five tips, and pretty soon your whole bridal party will be fast friends!

She surprises me with every fabulous design move, and I love it! Get ready to be inspired with this super romantic shabby chic styled shoot that The Events Boutique created together with some amazing vendors. I have to warn you, this one will distract you from your morning routine, so make some time to view the stunning images. Actually, you may view these images more than once. Or a few times.

From Christina at The Events Boutique

My Shabby Chic look was inspired by Spring in the Garden. When I stood in the Lower Meadow, I was surrounded by roses, wild flowers, and lavender. I immediately thought of a French Countryside. That inspired me to do a Shabby Chic theme with the weathered and French style  furniture. I visited Toast Party Rentals and just fell in love with their entire inventory. Jackie the owner from Toast was AMAZING and brought my visions to life not only with her furniture but also with accessories from her collection. She really was spectacular to work with. I worked with TGIS Catering to highlight something unique they offered.  Offering their farm to table concept typical in France and European countries. They shop at farmers markets.  It was so wonderful to work with such amazing vendors by my side.

Top Five Coachella-Inspired Beauty Trends for Brides

Coachella is over, but that doesn’t mean the party’s over! Whether or not you were jamming out in the desert this year, these five beauty trends will  have you screaming for an encore.

Coachella Lipstick.jpg

Deep Say Something Lips

Lorde really kicked off this trend, and we’ve been seeing it on tons of Coachella fashion blogs. Deep berry lips for summer create a sultry vibe and were adored in the desert. Don’t be afraid of the color- own it! A deep toned lip can work for bachelorette parties and is great for night looks. Just keep your eyes more on the natural side to keep from looking too painted.

Coachella Eyebrows.jpg

Thin Arched Brows

The full eyebrows are taking a backseat to arched brows. Lots of festival goers were rocking a thinner brow than we’ve been seeing, and the arch creates an elegantly framed face. Use a waxy brow pencil to keep your brows together as much as possible so they don’t look too full or bushy. Keep your color as natural as possible and follow your natural arch so it doesn’t look too drawn on.

Coachella Face.jpg

Dewy Sun-Kissed Skin

A beautiful trend we loved from Coachella was dewy golden skin. Use a moisturizing foundation or tinted moisturizer all over to really get that festival glow. This will look fantastic for outdoor weddings. Instant goddess glow!

Coachella Naked 2.jpg

Metallic Eyeshadow

Pedal to the metal! Silvery metallic shadows were huge at Coachella- we’re guessing Urban Decay’s Naked 2 palette got a serious work out all over the desert. The cool tones look polished while still being fun and funky. Cool metallics can be dressed up for a wedding ceremony, or dressed down for a casual bridesmaid brunch. Start silvery on the insides and smoke out the creases for a dynamic eye look.

Coachella Eyeliners.jpg

Neutral Eyeliner

Pack up the teal and periwinkle eyeliners for later- brown is back! Keep your eyes looking young and wide with a neutral toned eyeliner. If brown isn’t your scene, go for the gold. Lighter liners that open your eyes up make you sparkle just a little more. This is perfect for brides and bridesmaids- it’s an instant eye twinkle!
