Five Trending Bridal Beauty Products

The weather may not always be settled (pick a side- hot or cold!), but it sure is Spring! Even if it’s not perfect Spring break weather wherever you are, you can still take part in these five trending Spring beauty products. If you’re due to get hitched soon, you’ll want to look into these so you can look your best on the big day!BHLSpringBeauty2.jpg

Liquid Lipstick

This trend is really catching on and becoming perfected by some major brands. Stila makes an amazing all-day liquid lipstick that’ll run you $22 at beauty stores like Sephora and Ulta. If you’re unsure, you can pick up Revlon’s liquid lipstick at a drugstore for around $8. Liquid lipsticks can pack some serious color punch while looking fresh all day long. There’s a low touch up factor and the slide on as easily as a lipgloss. Upgrade your lip game, and you’ll make everyone jealous of the lucky guy who gets to kiss you!

Lip Scrub

Between liquid lipstick colors, you will need to take care of those lips. Lip scrubs are becoming increasingly popular ways to take care of those lips just like you take care of your skin and hair. There are a wide range of lip scrubs, from drugstore brands like elf up to specialty store lines from Lush. Try to exfoliate your lips with a scrub once a week (pair it with your next deep condition or mud mask!) to have soft lips all Spring.BHLSpringBeauty1.jpg.jpg

High Gloss Nail Polish

Keep that poolside wet look going from the ceremony to the reception with a super shiny nail color. Bonus points if you can score a dewy Spring break color. If you’re wearing a neutral tone, go as bright as you wanna go to make that mani pop! If you’re wearing a fun color, try to do a tone in the same family. Matching colors can be too put together, keep it loose and fun (that’s what Spring is all about!).

Paraffin Wax Mani

Here in L.A., the paraffin wax mani treatment is popping up faster than our Spring daisies! This involves dipping your hands into a paraffin wax treatment for a few minutes, then washing them off to reveal soft, smooth hands. This add on is perfect if you’re doing gel nails, since the UV lights can be drying and damaging to your skin. Keep those hands looking good, it’ll make your ring sparkle that much more!

SpringBeauty3.jpg.jpg

Hang Ten

Anytime there’s a change in temperature and climate, you’re going to have to do what you can to keep your hair from frizzing. We love leave in conditioners, but our favorite right now is the It’s A 10 brand. They keep our hair smooth, silky, and effortlessly flawless all the time. We love it to create loose Spring-y waves that scream carefree romantic.

Top Five Tips for Planning a Destination Bachelorette Party

Whether you’re a meticulous maid of honor or a hands on bride, you’ll need some serious organization skills to pull off a destination bachelorette party. If you want to take a Spring break with your girlfriends in honor of the wedding, check out our tips for having the most awesome bachelorette party ever!DestinationParty.jpg.jpg

Start a Chain

Stick to one form of communication with everyone that’s going to keep everyone updated all at once- email. This way you can send links and skip over messages that you don’t need or aren’t relevant anymore. Keep everyone on the chain by hitting ‘reply all’ every time. Just be sure to not reply with ‘lol’ at everything. Keep it strictly to travel related information and save all the side conversations for chat or text.

Do Research

Narrow down any destination options if you haven’t already. Use the email chain to settle anything you’re unsure of with a vote. Be sure to do research on all destinations and activities that you could do and present that to the group with links or reviews. An informed traveler is a happy traveler!

Divide and Conquer

When you have a game plan, divvy up the work so you can all enjoy the festivities. If you have a friend who has a knack for finding great restaurants, have them in charge of finding nearby restaurants or bars. If you have someone who knows hotel professionals, have them in charge of the hotel (you may even be able to score a discount!). Use your awesome team to your advantage to have a smooth and safe trip.

Set Deadlines

Have a timeline and make sure everyone sticks to it! To keep costs down for everyone, get any plane tickets booked at least two weeks in advance of departure. Have everyone get their days covered at work if they need it a few weeks before departure. Keep everyone accountable so there’s no drama later on.

Pack Light

Stick to the essentials and pieces that are versatile. Plan ahead- if you’re spending most of your time at the beach, you may not even need any jeans or sweaters at all. If you’re going out, skip the bikinis for cocktail dresses. Really try to plan your packing ahead so you don’t overpack. If you’re close enough with your bridesmaids, plan out who’s going to bring flat irons, curling irons, or blow dryers. If you can keep it to a purse and a carry on, you’ve done it right.

Wish Upon a Wedding Blissful Wishes Ball 2014

On this gorgeous Wedding Wednesday, it seemed appropriate to feature a fabulous event for a wonderful cause. A week ago, the Wish Upon a Wedding Southern California hosted their annual gala at the Hilton, Costa Mesa California. With 180 guests at attendance, and some amazing sponsors, the gala was a success!  You know that I love weddings and not only because they are pretty to look at, but the fact that it  brings two people together to express their love for each other. Then add Wish Upon a Wedding, who provides a wedding dream to couples who are facing terminal illness or life altering circumstances, and I am really touched. I was so excited to be part of this night, and  be surrounded by not only lovely and gorgeous details, but to see how many care so much for this cause. I smiled the whole night, and can not help but smile as I write up this feature.

A few words from Percy Sales, President of Wish Upon a Wedding Southern California Chapter…

The 4th Blissful Wishes Gala was a huge success! The board of Wish Upon a Wedding Southern California would like to thank everyone who attended, our sponsors, donors and volunteers! The evening included a live and silent auction that included a trip to Bora Bora, a ride in a Formula Drift car, and a lively photo booth by The SoCal Shutterbooth Girls. Guests danced the night away to the sounds of The Society Band and a special performance by Frenchie Davis, star of The Voice, American Idol and Broadway. The most heartfelt moments were speeches by our recent Wish recipients John and Jo-Ann which brought the crowd tearfully to their feet. Shining Star honorees were Rev. Clint Hufft. Pauline Parry and Kevin Covey.

With everyone’s generosity and support we have raised over $45,000 for our organization! Thank you all!

Tips That Will Assist You With Public Speaking at a Wedding

Some people cringe at the thought of public speaking. The thought of standing in front of a bunch of people and making a presentation is scary for a lot of people. If you happen to be a best man at a wedding, or even the maid of honor, or the father of the bride, chances are you will be asked to pick up the microphone and give a toast in front of the entire audience. Many people overcome this fear by drinking – which is a huge mistake! Do you really want your words of love coming from someone that’s maybe had a few too many? Of course not. This is why it is very important to practice public speaking. In this article, we’ll give you some basic tips to improve your delivery and give a great toast.

Make sure you wear a supportive pair of shoes when picking out your tuxedo. For the ladies, this might be a lot harder, since the shoes will always have to match the dress and don’t have the luxury of having a choice between style and comfort like the guys do. You want your posture to be tall and confident, with open and relaxed shoulders so you portray confidence. If you get tense feet, knee or low back pain, it will affect your speech greatly. Make sure your posture is good and that you do not lock your knees.

The way you look can determine how well you do at public speaking. If you are not well-groomed or dressed at your best, you are not going to feel very confident with yourself. This lack of confidence may cause you more fear and could mess up your whole speech. So, be sure to look your best! If you need to, run to the bathroom to make sure your hair is in place or your makeup is touched up so you know you are looking your best. In terms of the length of the speech, try not to have it go longer than five minutes. This is the average attention span of most individuals, so speaking for longer than this is going to risk boring them. If you have to speak for longer than this, find some way to change gears in the middle to liven things up.

Practice your speech frequently once you have it memorized. Work on issues where you lose your flow. Learn to breath with ease and pace your delivery. Make sure that your speech time allows some open space for interruptions, which are hopefully rounds of applause. When you can, practice using your speech equipment. Just do not practice so much that the whole thing sounds fake and rehearsed. The best speech givers understand that importance of sounding like they are winging it, which ironically comes with a ton of practice. Always be yourself when you are giving a speech and you will have better luck with the audience. Sincerity is a quality that many people respect and admire. If it is clear to the audience that you are not putting on a show when you are speaking to them, they will receive your message better.

Avoid fidgeting when speaking in front of an audience. Playing with your hair, chewing on your nails and other similar behaviors serve to distract the audience from listening to what you have to say. Instead of remembering your message, they may remember that you continually smoothed your hair. If you find it difficult to stop fidgeting, clasp your hands together in front of you or behind you, or place them on the lectern. If you will be speaking for longer than five minutes, be sure to have a glass of water handy since your mouth could go dry.

Public speaking may seem difficult at first, but the more you practice or at least go in prepared, the easier it will become. You just need the right tools and some self-confidence. Remember, all people want to hear is your heartfelt words for the new couple. If you share those openly and eloquently, you can make those words last a lifetime.

The BHL Guide to Prefect Spring Skin

Spring is in the air, is your skin ready for the season? We’ve got the six best steps for getting your skin in shape for wedding season.

Get Off to a Good Start

Wash your face in the shower using a daily cleanser. It can be tempting to use a more deep cleaning facial cleaner everyday, but that runs the risk of stripping your skin of its’ important oils. Instead, opt for a daily cleaner that is meant for daily use. Wash everything else you need to in the shower before your start your face- your hair, skin, do any shaving you need to, then work on your face. The longer you put off your face, the more the steam will open up your pores. It’s a great habit to get into year round that will keep your skin staying spotless.BeFunky_Skin Rehab (1).jpg

Get Ready for Prime Time

Now that the seasons have changed, it’s important to keep your skin clear from the start. Opt for a primer that is oil-free, and organic if you can. Pick a primer that’s really catered to your skin type, like a matte primer for oily skin or a moisturizing primer for dry skin. Keeping everything oil-free lets your skin breathe, which you’ll need.BeFunky_Skin Rehab (2).jpg.jpg

Build a Foundation

You may want to consider switching up your foundation with the seasons. As the seasons change, so does your skin. It’s good to start using a foundation that has SPF now that you may have more time in the sun. As a rule, with the warmer seasons, it’s a also a good idea to have a more light to medium coverage foundation. Let your skin breathe and you can avoid any surprise outbreaks or irritations (which you cannot afford during wedding season!). BeFunky_Skin Rehab (3).jpg.jpg

Set it and Forget it

To keep your foundation from smearing, wearing out, or generally just not staying put, use a setting spray. We are HUGE fans of setting sprays here at BHL. They keep us looking good from the ceremony to the dancefloor at the reception. BeFunky_Skin Rehab (4).jpg.jpg

Take it Off

The one makeup sin that we’ve all been guilty off at some point? Not taking off makeup at the end of the night! Come on, we’ve all done it. You know how important it is, and it’s a bad habit to sleep in your makeup. Every night, use a gentle makeup remover so that the chemicals don’t damage your skin. I like using makeup remover wipes at the end of the night. It’s an easy way to ensure all your makeup is truly off at the end of the night, plus it feels refreshing once your skin can breathe.

Have Good Habits

All these tips are great for everyday, but if you can help it try to take a few days to not wear makeup. Only wear makeup on days that you need to, and let your skin breathe on days that you don’t. Once a week do an at home mask or deep clean to clear out any build up and keep your skin clear and smooth. Be good about keeping your skin in check every day, and you’ll be absolutely glowing by the time the big day comes around.

The End Results: Giving Life to Your Wedding Photos

There are many things to consider when choosing your wedding photographer.  You want to be sure they’re skilled, professional, and experienced. You also want to be sure their style matches yours and that you connect. No one will spend more time with you before, during, and after your wedding day, than you photographer (with the exception of your fiancé).  But what about the end result?

Your photographer (provided you found the right one) is going to beautifully capture every moment and detail of the biggest day of your life, now what?  What will happen to those images?  Will they exist only on the photographer’s hard drive?  End up lost in a drawer on a CD or USB drive?  You’ve invested (yes, it’s an investment) a lot of money in your wedding photographer.  You’re paying for their time, skill, equipment, etc., so it’s important to give life to your photos through albums and other products.

There is a growing trend of photographers only providing their clients with a CD or USB drive, or even just an online gallery. Sometimes the images are straight from the camera without any culling or editing.  This is not a full service and those beautiful photos for which you spent money to be created, have no purpose. That’s not to say CDs and USB drives are bad, but they’re not the end-all-be-all. And when digital images/negatives are provided there should be more than a CD with something scribbled in sharpie.

You may think that you’ll purchase the USB drive and print your own images or create your own album, but will you really?  Do you have the time?  Do you have access to a photo lab that can print professional quality images and books?  Do you have the legal right to print those images?  These are things to consider.  We all like to do things for ourselves, but is DIY always the best option?

When choosing your photographer take a look at the products they offer.  Do they offer albums?  Are they included in their initial package or is it a separate purchase?  Are they press-printed, or do they use photographic prints (big difference in quality)?  How many photos can go in to the album?  Can you add more? Who designs the album?  An album can be a big investment (there’s that word again), but it is one of the best ways to give your photos life and for you to relive and share your wedding day.

Be sure to find out what other products your photographer may offer. There are many great options, in addition to prints, for displaying your wedding art in your home.  Give life to your photos.

Five Tips for Saving on Your Honeymoon

The big day is just around the corner- but that means the big vacation is too! Whether you’re hopping on a plane right after the reception or getting settled then hitting the road to enjoy your new spouse, you’re going to want to enjoy your honeymoon. A honeymoon is a well-deserved romantic vacation, and it’s absolutely worth saving for. We want to help, so we have our top five tips to help you save on the best vacation you’ll ever take.

Passports.jpg.jpg

Work Seasonally

Plan your trip against the tourism seasons, and you’ll save yourself time, money, and a headache. It’s easy to find out when a city is in high season- just check out their hotel prices in one month versus the next month. The higher the hotel rates, the more popular the destination is at that time. If you’re unsure, just call a hotel and ask their front desk when the best times are to get to that city. As a rule, most travel in July and August will be higher season for more popular areas. If you’re able to travel when it’s not a major school holiday (summer, spring, or winter break), it won’t be as popular a time to travel.

Get Organized

While you’re doing research on where to travel, be organized with all of your findings. If you have your heart set on Maui and plan for an off-season visit, write down the ballpark numbers that you’re seeing. The earlier you start budgeting, the better! You probably already have some practice working on the wedding, so this shouldn’t be a big deal. Keep this budget in mind and give yourself some wiggle room to cover any random taxes, expenses (ever forget your phone charger and have to buy one at the airport?), and souvenirs.

Mark Your Calendar

Once you’ve got your trip planned, try to buy any plane tickets about two to three weeks before your departure date. That’s typically the sweet spot when some fare cuts are made before they go right back up. Airfare is very difficult to get deals on, so you just have to be strategic about when you book.

Get a Room

Reach out to the resort or hotel that you want to book and tell them it’s your honeymoon. Sometimes that magic ‘H’ word can make miracles happen. Hotels want to accommodate you so that you have the best time of your life and want to come back. Call ahead, speak to a sales manager and tell them your story. Mention how much you’ve wanted to come out to their city and how much you love the property. They may be able to lower your room rate, upgrade you to a better suite, or even comp some champagne to celebrate!

Plan Your Meals

One of the biggest expenses you may not budget properly for? Food and entertainment. Before hitting the road, do some research on sites like Groupon or LivingSocial to see if there’s restaurants that you’ll want to check out. It’s an easy way to save yourself money before you even start, plus it keeps you from being indecisive and wasting time searching for restaurants that you’d want to try once you’re there. Show tickets, museum admission, meals, and even transportation can be found for discounted prices online. Plus, most sites let you download the app and use that to redeem your vouchers- less to lug around while you’re traveling!
