Five Essential Questions for your Wedding Photographer

One of the most important vendors at your wedding is your photographer. Whoever you hire is in charge of helping you and all your loved ones remember how awesome your wedding is- that’s huge! We want to help you find the right photographer for your wedding, so be sure to ask them these five questions before you sign the on the dotted line.

“Do you like doing weddings?”

More often than not the photographer will say, yes but take note of how they say it. Some photographers just do weddings to make some quick cash, but if their heart isn’t in it you’ll be able to tell. A photographer is an artist, and that is a very emotional thing. Find a photographer who is passionate about weddings, and your photos will be that much more heartfelt and impactful.

“What’s your turnaround time like?”
Turnaround means how quickly after the wedding will they be able to give you your photos. There are some photographers who are able to do a same-day turn around and give you a slideshow or short video from the ceremony to play at the reception. Some photographers will take a few weeks or longer to edit and get your photos back to you. This is incredibly important, and you should be absolutely sure when you’ll get your images. You don’t want to rely on your sister’s cell phone pics to look back on the most important day of your life. If you’re able to, yelp your photographer or reach out to other people who had that photographer photograph their wedding and ask about their turnaround.

“Will you be bringing help?”

Some photographers travel alone, some have an assistant or two to cover extra angles or to assist in general. If you’re getting married in a tight space, this is very important to know! Have a general head count of how many people will be swarming you. Plus, some photographers may charge a little extra for needing an assistant. Know what you’re getting before the big day!

“What do you need on the day of?”

Have a checklist for the photographer so you’re able to assist to keep things going. Some photographers may ask that they are able to eat during the ceremony as well, some may need to know where all the outlets are. You don’t want to send a groomsman out on an outlet hunt half an hour before the reception starts. Get in touch with the venue to assist in any power questions, and if needed set aside some space for the photographer’s bags or extra items. They may need some space to house their camera cases, backpacks, backup drives, or anything else they need.

“What is your deposit policy?”

Some photographers may not put the deposit towards the overall total of services! Be sure to ask if the deposit goes towards the total, or if the total you are given is after the deposit (as in total plus deposit is the actual cost). Sometimes there can be some confusion so be one hundred percent sure you know what the total cost is for all services. That also includes knowing exactly what you’ll be getting, such as one thumb drive full of everything, access to a private website of your photos, physical prints, etc. Know how you want to receive all your media before you start negotiating so you get everything that you want.

Top Five Wedding Tips for Couples with Pets

Your fiance or your maid of honor may be your best human friend, but what about your best furry friend? For all those couples out there with their own furry friends, we’ve got five cute ways to keep them involved in your wedding. They’re a big part of your lives after all, they should get to be a part of the festivities!
Put Them in the Pictures

While you’re planning your engagement or invite photos, think about involving the furry friends! You can do a fun “family” photo of you two and your pet. Pictures of all of you cuddling, playing, or just flopping around are adorable. Everyone loves cute pet photos, why not up your couple cute factor by adding your adorable furry friend? Just be sure to have a lint roller on hand.

BHLPETS2.jpg.jpg

Dress Them Up

Even if you don’t usually dress your little buddy up, it’s a wedding! Everyone dresses up! Swing by a specialty store and pick up some formal wear for your furry friend. Usually things like bowties are easy formal wear for pets that aren’t too annoying for them to wear. Putting your cat in an entire fluffy dress may get mangled quicker than you realize.

Register for the Whole Family

While you’re registering, think about your pet. Try not to register for anything that they could eat/mangle/destroy quickly (goodbye, white lace couch cushions!). If you’re finding that you already have a lot of basic household things, you can register for pet-friendly items. Registering at big box stores like target can give you the option to request pet toys or accessories. All the fun wedding presents don’t have to go straight into the kitchen- Fido should be able to enjoy some wedding presents too!

Give Them a Job

A great way to have your pet help out during the wedding is to give them a job! For bigger animals like dogs, mini horses, and pot bellied pigs, you can have them walk down the aisle or act as the ring bearer (we REALLY want to see pictures if you have your pot bellied pig act as your ring bearer). If you have a smaller animal like a guinea pig, rabbit, or mouse, you can set them up near the guestbook (with some supervision, of course). Involving them is a great photo op, plus gives you the chance to involve them on your special day.

BHLPets3.jpg.jpg

Give Them Room

There’s a family table, a kids table, why not add a pet table? Rather than a table, use baby gates to set up an area for pets. If you’re open to having guests bring their furry friends this could be a really convenient and sweet gesture. Set it up with lots of newspaper or towels, water, and some snacks. If you can, try to get a few people to keep an eye on them too. This lets your guests save on dog sitters and be able to bring their furry friends to the big day too. You’ll be doing them a favor, plus your pet will get a chance to socialize!

Inspiration behind the World Cup Wedding Styled Shoot by Sara Holland of At Your Door Events

Futbol/Soccer fans are loyal, committed and passionate for their team, their players and their country. A similar and uncanny set of character values can be found in a couple that is engaged to be married. They are loyal to each other, they are committed to the success of their marriage and they are passionate for one another.Every four years, there is a serge of energy felt globally that only the World Cup can bring. The attention of millions of hearts and souls are all focused on the success of their country’s team. The World Cup is so much more than just a competition – it’s about unity and chemistry. A wedding inspired by the World Cup is grounded in the same ideology – it’s romantic, hopeful and electric.

The styling for this shoot was inspired by the 2014 World Cup host country – Brazil. Overall, the look is influenced by global textures, colors and the spirit of the game.

Wedding Ceremony: The most sacred place on the field is where the results are made, the goalkeepers area box. So we created a wedding ceremony space that would be worthy of the commitment the couple is making to each other and surrounded them with the flags of the 32 countries competing in the 2014 World Cup. Vintage trophies triumphantly hold florals and religious candles remind us of the sanctity of their commitment.

Tablescape: The scarf is almost like a badge of honor for a futbol fan. These scarves were the foundation for our table design and tropical florals were layered over chippy vintage textures to give the design a very global and collected look.

Wedding Cake, Candy and Desserts: Traditional Brazilian Brigadero’s, brightly colored French Macrons and festive confetti on the wedding cake make for a cheerfully international celebration! The South American styling with rich hues and vintage textures are continued in these area to sweeten these iconic wedding day moments.

I was so excited to photograph Ashley & Corey’s wedding at Bennetts Orchard. It was like a real dream come true wedding! The venue was absolutely gorgeous and the details for this wedding was amazing!
I asked the Bride and Groom to answer some questions about their Wedding day. Here is what they had to say:

What was the flavor of your cake? Our personal cake was white, but we had many others! We had several different flavors of cheesecake, cookies & cupcakes!

What was the most memorable moment of your Wedding day?
 Bride: Walking down the aisle!
Groom: Ashley walking through the doors to come meet me down the aisle.

What was the Funniest memory from your wedding day?
Bride: Corey’s moves when he was taking off the garter.
Groom: Cutting & smashing the cake!

Special moments you will never forget from your Wedding Day?
Bride: Riding up to the ceremony in the carriage and walking through the doors & down the aisle to see my groom! Also, just spending the day with all of the important people in our lives!
Groom: Seeing Ashley, walking into the reception together and spinning my bride around!

What was your favorite detail you did for your wedding?
Bride: The whole ceremony- it was like a fairy tale!
Groom: The ceremony setting- the tree we chose to get married in front of, etc.

Top Five Kid-Friendly Wedding Ideas

Got a gang of little ones who RSVP’d? Kids can be tricky at traditional big events like weddings (especially if they’re all dressed up in clothes they can’t get messy!). We’ve got a few tips to help you plan for the little ones to keep them, their parents, and you happy.

Group the Little Ones

While you’re going through your RSVP’s, try to get ages (or at least ballpark ages) for all the little ones who will be at the wedding. If they’re too young, it may be good to keep them with their parents. If they’re old enough to not need mom or dad for every bite, think about doing a kid’s table situated between enough of their parents. Remember, every kid is different, so think about whether it will be good or distracting to keep them together during the ceremony. Ceremonies can be tricky, since you’ll want little distraction. Try to envision if they’re old enough to sit still and not make loud noises while you’re reciting your vows. If they’re not, it may be wise to have a plan B for the little ones.

Have a Contingency Plan

If the little ones will get too distracted during the ceremony or won’t be able to sit still, think about having something else set up for them during that time. It’s perfectly okay to be selfish during your wedding- it’s your show your way. Coloring books and crayons can be good for some kids but not enough for others. If you’re able to, maybe assign someone to babysitting duty with the little ones in a separate room or area from the ceremony. Throwing on Finding Nemo and having some puzzles or toys can keep your ceremony from unwanted fits or crying.

Plan the Floor

If you’re doing drinks or any kind of alcohol, be sure that any tabletops are high enough that kids can’t reach them. A maitai may sound good to us, but it looks like juice to little ones. You may also want to keep the gift area elevated enough that kids don’t try to open everything like a  birthday gift unwrapping party. Keeping kids corralled in a corner away from breakables, glass, and alcohol keeps everyone safe.

Consider Entertaining the Little Guests

A DJ or band will tie over your more grown guests, but will music alone engage the kids? Board games like Candyland or Guess Who can really keep younger ones entertained (and maybe some of your older ones, too!). This BHL blogger was at a wedding years ago that actually had a magician to perform for the children. This may be an expense that isn’t always planned for, but that particular wedding had a large number of children and kept them all entertained and happy while the rest of the guests hit the dance floor.

Thank Them Too

Be sure that the kids know that you appreciate them coming as well. Kids can be hard to plan for at weddings, but you should still be courteous to them as guests just like you would any other guest. Address the thank you note to them as well as whoever took them to the wedding, and give them hugs and thank you’s for coming before they leave. If you can, send them copies of any pictures that they’ve made cameos in. You do need to play to their crowd specifically, but they will feel really good about being appreciated.

From the bride…

For months leading up to the wedding day we, or my mother and I, put in a lot of thought and work on cost saving ways to make the day the way we wanted it.  My husband would listen to my thoughts and always just said whatever you want sweetheart!  Through saving mason jars, wine bottles, and various things we were able to make all of the center pieces for the wedding.  We were blessed to have an amazing group of family and friends to help us with many different key pieces.  One of the bridesmaid’s mothers was an ex cake baker and made the wedding cake as a wedding gift.  The favors were from my dad’s candy store, Lindale Candy Company.  My mom did so much work on making different signs to display at the wedding, pictures to display, and other various things.  My dad cut logs for the cake bases and made the giant F for the wedding.

Three days prior to the wedding, my best friend (maid of honor) and one of my bridesmaids showed up to help get last minute things into place.  My mother showed up two days prior.  We were lucky enough to be able to start setting up a couple of days prior because no one had rented out the lodge.  Now after all of the work put in to the decorations and all of the different pieces it was time to put them all together.  To save money we decided to do all of the decorating on our own.  We worked all day and all night for two days to get everything ready.  We also got a group of family and friends together to set up the chairs at the wedding location.  One of my bridesmaids made all of the bows and tin can displays for the wedding site the day before the wedding.  She also wrapped the burlap through the arch to make it fit to the décor.  Without the help of my friends and family, this day would not have been possible.

So the wedding day, we all wake up around 7 am to eat breakfast and go get our nails done.  I had spent the night at the lodge with all of my bridesmaids so that we could all be together.  My maid of honor slept in a twin bed next to my twin bed.  We spent hours talking that night and that morning about the day to come.  Once we woke up, we started doing some last minute touches (putting table cloths on, center pieces in place, etc.) before heading out to get our nails done.  After finishing up with our nails, we returned to the lodge where hair and makeup were so that we could get started on that.  While the first two girls started with hair and makeup, the remaining girls started putting flowers out in the vases.  The flowers were ordered bulk and we arranged them ourselves.  The day flew by because we were all busy finishing up the last few things.  After putting the flowers out at the reception we went to the wedding site to put flowers out there.  Once that was done it was time for me to start getting my hair and makeup done.  Before we knew it, it was time to head to the wedding ceremony location to meet the photographer and get everything going.

While walking down the aisle it was amazing to see all of the hard work we put in come to life.  With everyone there smiling and all of the little touches looking amazing I knew that all of the hard work was totally worth it.  Even when we arrived to the reception I felt like it was all even better than it had been right before leaving for the ceremony.  It was like seeing everyone there enjoying the space made it more special and even more perfect.  This day would not have been possible without the help of my amazing mother, father, my new in-laws, and all of my bridesmaids.  We could not have had such a perfect day without all of their help.

Top Five Summer Bridal Beauty Trends

Need a summer update before the bachelorette party? We’ve had our eyes on these five trending looks for the summer! Be ready to get dolled up.

Punchy Pink Pucker

BHL1.jpg.jpg

Lay down your lips with a bold pink waxy lipliner. If your lipliner is strong enough, any deep or fun lip color will layer perfectly over it. Anything from a hot pink to a true red will layer into a bold pink that is perfect for summer. This look is sexy and fun, making it perfect for bachelorette parties and night ceremonies. Just be sure that it is a waxy liner so that it stays on longer and through food.

Candlelit Highlighter

BHL5.jpg.jpg

Nothing’s more romantic than candles- why not keep that glow going? We like creamy rose-gold highlighters right on cheekbones. Highlights that are reminiscent of candles and fire make skin glow in the summer and look perfect this season. Just be sure to blend it out with a domed brush or a blending sponge so it photographs well. You don’t want to stand out in a wedding photo for having highlighter all over your face in streaks.

Island-Chic Nails

BHL3.jpg.jpg

Brights are back, but go for more mature brights. A sexy bright will look great on your fingers while they’re wrapped around a margarita on girl’s night, but also refined during the reception. Yellows and oranges are fun for the beach, but for more mature events this summer go for a deep color with a tint of fun.

Rosy Tinted Lids

BHL2.jpg.jpg

We’ve been fans of doing a white liner in the waterline, but we also love more highlighted colors. A warm silver or a rose gold keeps that summer glow going all over. A smooth, highlighter eyeliner opens up your eyes all around. Use it lightly in your inner corners or as a base for your eyeshadow to create a beautiful depth. Plus, it’ll make it look like you woke up with a sparkle (and that the bachelorette didn’t run until 4AM).

Deeply Toned Teases

In the vein of a more mature bright summer this year, teals and deep greens have been everywhere. Dust off some of your fall colors and push them forward for this summer! Deep cool colors create a mysterious sultry summer vibe that’s perfect for cocktail hour or to pop on a neutral toned dress. Tones like this are also perfect for jewelry pieces, pops of eyeliner, or (if you’re adventurous) a swipe of colored mascara.

Hotel at the Lafayette Wedding from Heather Bellini Photography

I know it is pretty hard to say goodbye to a long weekend and hello to the week. Mondays can be a total drag, but when you have a gorgeous wedding like this one, Monday just became my favorite day of the week.  I am in love with the teal and pink colors that this couple incorporated into their wedding day. It pairs nicely with the beautiful and rustic venue set in Buffalo, New York.  But, can we talk about the bride’s dress for a second? Oh my! This gown is so romantic and oh so lovely. Did you see the back of the gown? I can not get over how pretty this dress is. The soft lace details and stunning veil to pair it, is a dream. Simply beautiful. I can go on and on about this wedding (and the wedding gown!), but I think its best if you browse the stunning images for yourself and see what I am obsessing over.  I think your Monday is about to get really good. Enjoy!!

From Heather Bellini Photography

The rustic, yet modern decor of the Hotel at the Lafayette, with its exposed brick walls, soft lighting and city atmosphere was all that was necessary to inspire the happy couple, as well as their photographers! The garden patio was the perfect place for the wedding party to gather for portraits. The teal and bright pink color palette, was the perfect compliment to the warm May weather. Our enthusiasm for this fun couple and their fabulous wedding day has only grown and we are so thrilled to share their photos. Here is a glimpse of their special day in Buffalo, NY.

From Jessica Lee Thomas

Crystal & Danny’s Love Story Session is one I will always remember. From the representation of their upcoming  4th of July Wedding Day, to the military tribute,  and most of all, the beautiful love these two share… their Engagement Session was perfect in every way. It’s important for me as a photographer to not just capture “photos” for an Engagement Session. Instead, I love to capture a Love Story that represents the two as a couple… and really stands to remind them (in many years to come) of their unique relationship. When Danny & Crystal told me they wanted to have their session on the Queen Mary, I knew it would be perfect. It is not only a symbol of patriotism, but also the backdrop to an incredible wedding on the 4th day of July at Hotel Maya. When Danny showed up in his Army Uniform and Crystal matching in her gorgeous army green skirt, black top, & pumps, I was thrilled! They looked amazing & the Queen Mary was a perfect setting for them. The entire afternoon, Danny was so attentive with Crystal. He was a perfect gentleman. Crystal just radiated with her love of Danny, as they laughed effortlessly throughout the session. When Danny and Crystal took out their over 6 ft. tall American Flag, we captured photos as we celebrated the United States of America and most importantly all those who serve selflessly for our Freedom. We also celebrated the day to come- when the fireworks would light the sky above their venue at Hotel Maya, while these two celebrated being husband and wife with their closest family & friends.
