Top Nine Holiday Travel Tips

The holidays can be such a beautiful time, particularly here in sunny Southern California. We may not get snow, but we are keen to head towards it for the holidays. If you’re traveling for the holidays whether it be for family or if you’re just heading south for the winter, be sure to check out our travel tips.

Plan Ahead

Being organized is more important now than ever! Keep all of your travel itineraries together, and know when you can check in to flights. Sign up for text alerts on all your flights so you know immediately if there are any changes. Call and confirm any hotel or car rentals about a day or two in advance. Sometimes during busy seasons (like holidays), things can get overlooked and overbooked. Don’t worry about bothering anybody; make sure you and your loved ones are taken care of. It may be useful to do a weather check before you leave to make sure you packed the appropriate clothes. If you and your honey are spending the holidays apart, be sure to have some scheduled time to chat and catch up.

Make a List

And be sure to check it twice! Go over everything you’ll need while you go over your itinerary. Write down how many outfits to pack (and which ones- if you’re that meticulous!), what shoes you’ll need to stash, and any necessary accessories to bring. If go see grandma while wearing the necklace she sent you last year, it’ll make her smile. Think ahead so you can relax once you get to your destination. It can be helpful to share your list with your fiance to ensure you’re both prepared. An organized couple is an efficient couple!

Practice Your Story

If you’re engaged, newly married, or even just getting there, chances are you’ll end up telling your story to family members and old friends. It may be commonplace to you, but hearing a real life love story is exciting. Be sure you get your ‘how we met’ or ‘how he popped the question’ story down to an art. Keep it short, simple, and focused on the best details. You also may need to go over the story with your loved one to ensure only the necessary details are shared.

Give Yourself Time

The holidays are a busy season for a reason- everyone’s moving around all at the same time with the same dates in mind. What may have taken a two hour drive in traffic may be a four hour drive in even worse traffic. Airports are going to be busier than ever, and security will have to be more diligent due to the higher volume. Whatever time you would normally allot for travel, make sure you plan for extra delays. If you’re driving, also plan for weather like bad rain or winds to affect your commute. Winter may mean family time, but it can also mean harsher weather. In Los Angeles, a little rain can turn an hour commute into a two hour commute very easily.

Have Back Ups

It’s the season of giving, and you don’t want to end up empty handed anywhere. Stash an extra gift card for a store everyone loves (like Target, Best Buy, or Amazon) in your purse, just in case. Some people may be offended if they give you a gift and you don’t have anything to give them. It may seem a little silly, but it’s true. It’s always better to veer on the side of polite and grateful, than forgetful. Keep a pen on hand too so you can put their name on it.You may also want to have a few extra save the dates on hand, just in case you run into a family member you couldn’t get a hold of.

Read Up

If you’re taking a long drive, consider swapping out the road trip mix for an audiobook. You’ll get a chance to catch up on the books you’ve been meaning to get to, plus it’ll be more engaging for your brain than your high school throwback songs. You’ll also have something new and exciting to talk about when you hit the holiday party circuit.

Catch Up

Before you head out, have an idea of what you’d like to get accomplished. If you’re waiting on RSVP’s, keep a list of the people you need to touch base with. Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean that the work is over, a wedding takes a lot! Keep your eyes on the prize, ladies. If you need to, use this holiday time to get plus ones and dinner orders in order.

Get Charged Up

Chargers, chargers, chargers! It’s not just that we love San Diego; we also love all of our electronics to be juiced up. This can be one of the easiest things people forget, and one of the most crucial. It can be useful to invest in a 4-USB port charger, so you can just take your cords together with one charging device. There are also charger key chains available for some phones, and you can always pick up a backup battery. If you forget your chargers, you may end up overpaying for one. Airports can charge as much as twenty-five dollars for phone chargers. Yikes!

Pack Smarter, Not Harder

Try to put the heaviest items towards the bottom of your bag. Putting heavy things at the top creates more pressure than is necessary and can wear you out. Try to leave yourself some room in your bag for anything you may pick up along the way (like books or presents). Put a reusable water bottle in your purse to refill at the airport so you don’t end up buying overpriced disposable bottles. Stick as much in your checked baggage as possible so you don’t have an overflowing carry on purse. Little tricks you find along the way can save you time and energy. Top Five Winter Wedding Ideas

Winter is a time of family, friends, feasting, and festivities, and it is quickly becoming one of the most popular times to tie the knot. However, with the holiday season in full swing, winter can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. With our five top ways to incorporate winter themes into your wedding, you can add some festive cheer without adding extra stress to your season. So cozy up and read on to learn how you can be extra merry with your holiday and wedding planning!

Dress

The type of weather and climate you will be facing on your big day will determine just how bundled you and your wedding party will need to be. Keep in mind that despite how chilly it might be outside, you do not want to be sweaty and uncomfortable in a thick and heavy dress once you are inside and in the heat. Intricately detailed dresses (a la The Great Gatsby) are still trending this season, so take advantage of the beautiful beading and let it reflect the feeling of a gorgeous winter landscape. This decadent trend also celebrates straps and long sleeves, as well as capes and fur stoles. And don’t worry—there are plenty of gorgeous faux fur stoles out there for you to choose from!

Décor

Be cognizant of your guests’ winter traditions by staying clear from decorating with a purely Christmas theme. There are plenty of ways you can add gorgeous winter décor that doesn’t scream Santa Claus—plus, by steering away from Santa motifs and red and green drapery, you are also keeping your wedding and reception classy, and not cheesy. However, you can still incorporate red and green by using garland and holly, and a Christmas tree here and there won’t overkill your venue. A gorgeous tree upon entering the reception adds a majestic and wintery touch—having your guests sign tree ornaments to hang on the tree is a great substitute for a guest book, and it allows you and your spouse to have something special to look back on every winter.

Flowers

Bring the outdoors inside by decorating tables with pinecones, tree saplings, holly, garland, and poinsettias. Large white branches with orchids dangling from the limbs resemble snowflakes falling in snow. Don’t be afraid to use winter fillers—pinecones, sprigs of Christmas trees, branches—in your bouquet in lieu of using purely flowers, and instead of choosing only red and green flora, opt for cooler colors in muted tones.

Food

Wintertime is all about cozy comfort food that is shared with family and friends, so don’t skimp on the food at your reception. Choose filling classics such as mashed potatoes, ham, turkey, and squash, and let your sweet tooth take over with s’mores stations and miniature pies. My favorite part? A hot coca and cider bar!

Favors

As always, the best favors tend to be either edible or functional, and a winter wedding gives you plenty of options in either category. Miniature pies, hot cocoa ingredients, and peppermint bark make for tasty favors, while gloves, scarves, and blankets are always appreciated during the winter months.

Happy Halloween from BHL

I love the holidays, but Halloween is by far my favorite holiday of the year!  Fun, festive, and totally silly. It is super fun to dress up and be anything your heart desires for one day. Why not right? Besides all the costumes and silliness that goes with it, the desserts are pretty good too. Well, there is just one that comes to mind, and that is pumpkin pie. I can have myself a piece of warm pumpkin pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream anytime and be content.  Pumpkin cheesecake? That is simply divine and mouthwatering good.  I can go on and on about Halloween treats as you know I am a total dessert lover.  We have been having a great time with all the fall details of weddings and all things bridal, and I wanted to take a break from blogging today and share some Halloween fun from the BHL staff. At BHL, the staff is totally into Halloween, and we thought it might be fun to share some Halloween love. If you love Halloween as much as we do, share your costume or favorite Halloween treat on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter and tag us @bridalhotlist. We love to see how you celebrate Halloween! Here is a look at some of the BHL staff and their costumes.

I dressed up as Minnie Mouse and made a visit to Minnie Mouse’s home to take a quick photograph. The whole day little girls were so happy when they saw me and said ” Mommy, look, its Minnie Mouse!”. That just made my day. I knew my costume was perfect for the happiest place on earth!

An Independence Day Food Extravaganza: Fourth of July Recipes

The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays in the United States. Growing up in Italy, I would only see it on TV. It was when I moved to the United States that I discovered the fun, energetic and patriotic spirit of the people celebrating Independence Day. What intrigued me even more was the variety of foods available during the celebration. From pies, to pizzas, to pigs in a blanket, everything sounded too delish to be true. As we are about to celebrate the 4th of July for 2013, I thought to share with you some of my favorite recipes that will delight your palate.

On the 4th of July, start your day with a patriotic breakfast.

4th2

What better way than using the red, blue and white colors of our flag? Mix your favorite Greek yogurt with blueberries, raspberries and almonds bits. Drizzle with honey and enjoy.

As lunch rolls in, you want to be able to have something easy that requires little work.  A sandwich seems a perfect solution. Call it PANINI and you have a winner! Is it finger food? Entree? No matter what, it will delight your taste buds.

4th4

You can use your imagination and make any of your favorite combinations. One of my favorite Panini assemblages is grilled bread, fresh tomatoes and basil with mozzarella. Stack of the ingredients and then place in a Panini press. If you don’t have one, just use your pan and press the Panini down with something heavy (i.e. smaller pan). However, your possibilities are infinite. Brie, pears and honey mustard is a perfect ten for a Panini.  As a side, you can serve veggies, salads, chips, kale chips, baked veggie etc.

As dinner roll in, the 4th of July screams ground meat! Specifically, burgers and meatballs. Burgers have always the spotlight, so today, we will focus on the underdogs:  Meatballs!

4th3

If you want to keep it leaner, use ground turkey. Otherwise, you can use ground beef. In a bowl, mix ground meat with your favorite seasoning. I usually use a chipotle based seasoning because of the smoked flavor. Add, one egg, a half a cup of bread crumbs (or panko or oatmeal), fresh herbs (especially sage and rosemary). Mix everything together. With your hands, form small balls and line on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Bake is oven for 25 minutes at 400 degrees. Serve hot or cold with your favorite sauce.

Of course we cannot forget about dessert.  This is the time to indulge. Buy your favorite desserts. The ones that you wish you could eat every day . The ones that make your eyes roll. And enjoy!

HAPPY 4th of JULY!

The All American Bride

The 4th of July is right around the corner, and with wedding season in full swing, it is no surprise that many brides are wondering how to incorporate the Independence Day festivities into their special day. However, if the idea of throwing Old Glory willy-nilly all over your wedding reception makes you want to run for the hills, don’t you worry—we will show you how to add hints of 4th flair without creating a cheesy red, white, and blue festival.

LOCATION:
It can sometimes be difficult to walk the line between cheesy and classy when incorporating a strong theme into your reception. Picking the right location for your big day can be the first step in discovering just how far you can push your theme. For example, an outdoor reception can have more of a vintage Americana feel, while a reception in a hotel ballroom might restrict you in how far you can go with your 4th of July decorations. In other words, allow the “feel” of the venue dictate the “feel” of your theme choices. There is something “American” feeling about an outdoor wedding, whether it’s on a picturesque beach, a beautiful lakeside shore, a rustic barn, or under a tree in your own backyard.

DECORATIONS:
The décor will be the most impactful way for you to add some 4th flair. The key is choosing a design aesthetic that is cohesive—the last thing you want is some random flags stuck onto your table and cutouts of fireworks taped onto the walls. A classic “Americana” or Southern shabby-chic vibe fits into a Norman Rockwell aesthetic that is perfect for Independence Day. Think plaid, gingham, old lace, burlap, and rustic wooden signs and crates—easy, comfortable, and effortless beauty. If you want to go with red, white, and blue, keep the colors subdued and distressed, never bright or tacky. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns when it comes to your table decorations—mismatched linens, tableware, and flatware can give it an old, antique feel. It should look like everything came out of an old vintage trunk found in your grandmother’s attic, not like you bought it at a party store. Vintage flags can serve as table markers at the reception, while wildflowers in porcelain and glass vases delicately enhance the table. Stringing paper lanterns and tea lights add a romantic and nostalgic flare.

Adjusted Drink Station

FOOD:
Your food choices can be a fun and creative way to add some irony and humor into your reception. This is your chance to get cheesy! “Dressed-up” comfort food is a fantastic way to keep with your theme. Bacon-wrapped dates, macaroni and cheese, barbecue, gourmet grilled cheese, sliders, popcorn, a mashed potato bar—the list goes on! Cocktail choices range from craft beer to mint juleps, and for non-alcoholic drinks, think retro favorites: Coke served in real Coke bottles, lemonade, sweet tea, root beer. Mason jars are a great way to serve your drinks, but if you are worn-out from the whole Mason jar trend, you can always mix and match old glass bottles and jars. For desserts, caramel apples, cupcakes, and traditional pies are delicious options, while a snow-cone booth is sure to add some fun and quirk to any reception. Having an outdoor reception? Make a s’mores station around a campfire!

ODDS AND ENDS:
Continue your theme before and after your wedding by having your wedding stationery reflect your Independence Day motif—mixing patterns, using vintage-inspired fonts, and keeping the colors within the subdued color palette from your reception. You can also use the same type of stationery for writing your thank you notes. Wedding favors for your guests could be confetti poppers, sparklers, vintage flags, or even canned preserves from a local farm. Finish off your night with a private fireworks show or by driving off in a classic pick up truck or vintage car.

Finally, it is important to remember why we celebrate the 4th of July, and a great way to do that is by giving back. On your wedding registry, present your guests with the option of donating to a charity of your choice. There are several fantastic organizations that benefit veterans, soldiers, and military families. On your special day, nothing speaks more towards the spirit of the American people than giving back to those who helped us secure our freedom and those who are fighting to keep it intact.

TLC’s Four Weddings Holiday Special Episode Recap: December 6th

Did you watch last night’s Holiday Special episode of “Four Weddings” on TLCHere is a recap of the episode:

TLC’s Holiday Special of “Four Weddings”

Who are the Brides?:

  • Nancy absolutely loves Christmas and everything that it is. She is a Santa loving bride who wants to bring the Christmas spirit to all her guests at her wedding. The ceremony took place at a beautiful church where they had a traditional Catholic ceremony. The ceremony featured simple holiday decor, red rose petals, and bridesmaids wearing red dresses. The cocktail hour served a variety of food options for guests to choose from. Including a full size pig! The reception was held in gorgeous ballroom with a snowman, Christmas tree, and tall glass centerpieces which had snow-covered branches, a wreath, and red roses. Guests were handed out Santa Claus hats and Reindeer ears to wear and have some holiday fun. Santa even showed up and handed out candy canes! The live band played all night and guests danced the night away.
  • Davone a winter princess bride who enchants her guests at her wedding. The ceremony was a magical place. The room was decorated with all white decor and blue up-lighting. There were beautiful white branches with white twinkle lights, Christmas trees, white chairs, and white flowers. A true winter wonderland feeling.  After the cocktail hour, guests go upstairs to the ballroom where the reception took place. The winter wonderland theme and all its sparkles continued in the reception. The ballroom featured a white cake with snowflakes and sparkles, sparkle table numbers, diamond ring napkin holders, and beautiful white branched centerpieces. The dancing was full of high energy and fun.  Davone also changed into a second dress which showed off her bling bling shoes.
  • Lauren is a bride who wants to go back in time and have a Victorian Christmas wedding. The ceremony was at a church which featured white flowers, a cute little girl walking down the aisle, long flowing Victorian style dress with a long veil, and a red bridal bouquet.  Lauren loves the snow and had it snow as guests walked into the venue where the cocktail hour and reception took place. The elegant ballroom had hanging large chandeliers, candelabras with flowers surrounding it on the guest tables, with all that highlighted with nice gold lighting. Dinner was a buffet with variety of choices. Not only were the guests having a good time on the dance floor, but the couple as well. Lauren took off her groom’s shirt and started to dance with him on the dance floor!
  • Sakinah brings in the New Year with all her guests at her wedding. A beautiful glassed room is where the ceremony takes place. There are white flowers, a few holiday decor, and white twinkle lights above. She surprised all her guests including her groom by wearing a red dress at the ceremony. It was a beautiful long dress which flowed open wide at the bottom and was accessorized with a lovely red hairpiece. The reception space had red, black, and white colors, huge flower arrangements on top of a tall vase on all the reception tables, and lots of line dancing. Since it was New Years Eve, guests got to wear New Years Eve hats and tiaras, and use the noise makers and blow-horns. Sakinah changed into her second dress which was a fitted red dress. She was ready to celebrate the New Year countdown.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each holiday themed wedding that stood out for me. Nancy’s dress was a form-fitting beautiful dress which had glittering twigs on the front, and tulle cupped sleeves. The dress fit her like a glove, and was just perfect for her. I really loved her dress!  What I loved at Davone’s wedding was the personal vows shared between her and her partner Tiffany. The vows were very touching and heartfelt. You just could tell how in love this couple was and that true love was there for everyone to feel and experience. It was just magical and special, just like her winter wonderland theme. I really enjoyed it.  Lauren’s reception featured a special performance of bagpipes dedicated to Lauren’s groom. Her groom is a firefighter and this was a way to celebrate him. I thought this was very personal and a special way to include the groom and highlight what he does. I think for the most part, brides will say it is their day, but it really is a day for the groom too. So I thought this was a great way to incorporate him. What I really liked at Sakinah’s wedding was the whole idea of having a New Years Eve theme wedding. What a great way to start the New Year with your new husband and all your guests.  There was a countdown, red balloons were dropped, and then a total party vibe was created. How unique and fun to go to a wedding for a New Years Eve party? How fun!

Who won? Congrats to Nancy for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to a ski and spa resort in Alaska. I was actually surprised about Nancy winning. I am normally pretty good about guessing who the winner will be each week, so was shocked when Santa came out the limo.  Do you want to know who I thought would win? Devone! While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, all the other details – venue, dress, and originality – were owned by Devone’s wedding, easily exceeding the rest. I thought that every detail of her wedding reflected her diamond winter wonderland theme. In any case, Nancy did have a killer dress and fit her perfectly! I did love it, so great job Nancy!  So how did the other three brides score? Lauren came in second, Devone in third, and Sakinah in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results like I was?
