Five Hot Tips for Bridesmaids

Singles176-1024x682

Congratulations! You have been chosen to be the next best thing after being an actual bride. Think about it- you get to throw pre-parties with your friends, you can book yourself guilt-free spa treatments & beauty appointments, and you will ultimately spend an entire weekend lavishing in the joys of fantastic food, fashion, and friendship. Behold our Five Hottest Tips for the Bride’s Favorite Ladies.

1. Share your ideas with the bride, but don’t be hurt if she doesn’t use them. Most of the time, the bride has a pretty good idea of exactly what she wants her wedding day to look like. That doesn’t mean she has thought or heard of everything! Be open with your suggestions because you never know what might strike her fancy. If she signals for you to slow down, then respect her wishes and share only the best few ideas that you find. At the end of the day, it’s all about the bride and her specific vision.

2. Bring extra cash. No doubt you have heard of packing a wedding day emergency kit complete with bandages, aspirin, tweezers, and a needle & thread. These things are great, but they cannot buy you the conveniences that cash can offer. Let’s say you forgot something at home; you can pick up just about anything at the local drugstore. Taxi cabs take cash, waiters take cash, and cash-only bars take cash. Get the idea? Money talks!

3. Have a classy, unique toast prepared (hint: keep it short!). Should there be an unfortunate situation where the Maid of Honor bawls through the entire toast, is too nervous, or no one could hear her, have a few thoughtful lines prepared that sum up how special/hilarious/happy/thankful the bride and groom are, and deliver them like a boss. A nod to the parents in case someone forgets to thank them is another quick go-to toast and absolutely necessary if they are not otherwise mentioned.

4. Ask the bride for a list of no-no’s, and stick to it! The bride most likely has a mental list of cringe worthy conversation topics (exes, wedding costs, bachelorette party secrets) and behavior (complaining, constant texting, smoking near her dress) that she is hoping to avoid during the bridal festivities. By approaching her with this request, it takes the pressure off her from having to bring it up or worse– address problems directly on her wedding day. Some brides will already have this list prepared, and be very vocal about her no-no’s. But if you know your bud has a hard time being assertive, this list will be a lifesaving tool for her to keep the no-no’s at bay so she can relax and have the perfect day.

5. Be familiar with the wedding day logistics. Your bridesmaid dress acts like a beacon for guests to come and request information. Since you’re in the bridal party, you must know everything about the reception, transportation, where gifts go, you-name-it, right? If you don’t, study up! Review maps of where the ceremony and reception will take place. Know alternate routes in case there are road closures or an accident. Be familiar with the timing of events, things to do in the area, where people should park, etc. because you can’t always count on those groomsmen to know!

Share these tips with the bride and fellow bridesmaids. Better yet, add on some of your own must-have hot tips! Happy Bridesmaiding!

Five Budget Friendly Groom Gifts

Hello Bridal Hot List beauties! We love grooms here at BHL, and it’s our duty to help you show your appreciation for them too. The groom gift is an important way to show not only your appreciation for your man, but also create a statement based on who you are as a couple.  Flasks and personalized cufflinks are a classic for a reason and won’t go out of style, but these fun gifts will definitely score you some points for creativity. Plus, they’re all wallet-friendly (because you don’t need to be stressing over another wedding expense right now).

First Date in a Basket

If you’ve been together for a long time, it can be good to take a look back at how far you’ve come. Did you go out for a movie on your first date? Pick that movie up on blu-ray. Did you go to a concert? Pick up a live album or a greatest hits compilation. If you headed out to a bar, go see if that bar has shirts for sale. Recreate your first date in a gift bag that will make him remember falling in love with you. These can be done fairly inexpensively (around $50-$75, depending on how much you can add to your basket) and you can probably get everything you need at target or at least on amazon.com.

Puzzle

If your groom is more of a critical thinker, get a puzzle made of either a collage of the two of you or your engagement photos. Give him all the pieces jumbled up in a keepsake box and give him something to work on for a while. For bonus points, write him little notes or inside jokes on the back of the pieces. Shutterfly, or even Walgreens can turn your pictures into a puzzle for under $30.

Personalized Wine/Beer

If he’s a wine snob or a beer aficionado, celebrate that! Pick up a case of his favorite brew or a bottle he loves and get a special label made for him. It’s a sweet gift that he’s more than likely to share with you. You can get labels made online on sites like bottleyourbrand.com for around $10-$15. If you throw a few extra bucks at it, you can add pictures and make it super sentimental and sweet.

CYOA Book

Do you remember those choose your own adventure books from elementary school? Yeah, they’re still pretty awesome, and they’re surprisingly easy to write. Instead of creating a photo album, write a choose your own adventure book with photos of you both. Tell the story of how you met or how he proposed, doing a page for each milestone you overcame. Write it in second person, so the narrative is making decisions that affect where the story goes. At the end of each page, get the reader to go to one page to progress your story (turn to page four to go in for the first kiss, etc) and another page to go to (to blow her off, go to page twenty). Have one page set aside as a gag page and the rest as a linear story (just numbered and out of order like a true choose your own adventure book!). These can be done for under $50 on websites like Shutterfly or Picaboo, and you can use photos from facebook and flickr. You’ll score serious creativity points without breaking the bank, plus you’ll have a cool way to look back on pictures of you two over time.

The Ultimate 3-1-1 Travel Bag

Heading out of town for your honeymoon? If you’re flying, you’ll score some serious wife points by creating an awesome 3-1-1 travel bag. Remember, if you’re going to bring liquids on a plane one person gets one quart transparent bag and each liquid has to be in a three ounce container (it’s actually 3.4 ounces, or 100 ml but 3.4-1-1 doesn’t have the same ring to it).  Pick up tiny bottles of his favorite spirits to kickstart the honeymoon. Pick up some rum and ask for orange juice on the plane for a make-shift mai tai, or grab tiny tequila bottles to relax him before a long flight. Just make sure you get behind the wheel of the rental car when you land!

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: September 12th

Good morning Saturday goers! I am not going to delay, and go right into the recap of  last night’s episode of  “Four Weddings” on TLC.  What are your thoughts of the four brides and their weddings? What details stood out for you? Was there one bride which had a total “wow” wedding day? If you missed last night’s episode, don’t worry I have all the details right here. Grab your morning coffee, and sit back and enjoy!

TLC

Who are the Brides?:

  • Diana is the first to wed as she starts her wedding day with a ceremony set outside on a gorgeous lawn at an art center. The backdrop  is lush greenery with a few red colored decorations at the alter. The color red is used to represent the groom’s Chinese culture. The bride walks down on her own, as she holds a cascading floral bouquet. . The bride and groom’s cultures are incorporated into the ceremony. After they kiss as husband and wife, they are ready to celebrate with their guests. The guests make their way to the art center’s lawn for cocktail hour. During the cocktail hour, a sideshow performer entertained guests with some dangerous acts such as swallowing fire, and walking on glass. Following the show, guests enter inside for the reception. The guest tables were named by countries, and boarding passes as the escort cards. The reception decor was blue and yellow colored details,  and each table featured country flags that represented the bride or groom’s background. The dance floor was full of energy and fun.
  • Nicole’s  hardcore purple wedding day begins with some rain, so the ceremony takes place under a white tent. The aisle is decorated with purple rose petals, and hanging mason jars filled with purple flowers. After a fun and lovely ceremony, guests remained in the same space for cocktail hour. Inside the reception space guests pick up their “peas in a pod” escort cards and head to their tables. The reception features stunning chandeliers,  purple uplighting, purple linens, and purple lit centerpieces. Following dinner and dessert, some guests  got on the dance floor and did the polka dance.
  • Melea is ready to take the next step of her road trip and marry the love of her life. The wedding is set at a country club. The ceremony space featured white chairs, red rose petals down the aisle, and red ribbons tied to the chairs. After a heartfelt ceremony where the two shared their own vows, guests head over to the cocktail hour. Cocktail hour features personally food which the couple’s chef taste buds picked out. The reception space is white and red colored decor. White table linens, white chair covers with red sashes, and the centerpiece is red roses surrounded by candles. The wedding cake is a three tiered white cake with red colors and details of the couple’s travels from the West Coast to the East Coast. Following dinner, dancing is all about fun and high energy.
  • Leila is ready to sparkle and shine on her wedding day. Her big day is set in a grand hall with many gorgeous details. The ceremony is a large space with some purple lighting, tall  rhinestone decorated candles lining the aisle, and a arch decorated with white and purple flowers and crystals hanging down. After saying their “I do’s”, the couple makes their exit, while guest head to the cocktail hour. The cocktail hour is full of food, including sushi, clams, fajitas, noodles, and more. You name it, and it is there. The signature drink is a Key Lime Pie Martini with a graham cracker rim. The reception space is a circular room with a huge dome in the center with light shining through it. The reception also features another “cool” detail. The bar was made out of ice. All ice. The night sparkles with dancing, lights, and a party vibe.

A Hot Detail:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. I really loved Diana’s beautiful flower crown. It not only represented her Ukrainian culture, but it was such a gorgeous accessory complimenting her dress. She looked whimsical and very romantic. I could not stop looking at that flower crown, it was simply stunning!    So I have to say I absolutely LOVED the dessert bar at Nicole’s wedding. I love my desserts, and when there is more than wedding cake at a wedding, I am set. Talking about candy, homemade chocolate chip cookies, lemon bars, and more! Yum!  I loved the table numbers at  Melea’s wedding. They were state license plates from all the states that she and Lisa had traveled through together. The theme of road trip romance really showed here. What a personal and lovely detail!  So, this is a first, but I also loved the dessert bar at Leila’s wedding. Yep, thats how much I love desserts and sweets. This dessert bar consists of  a chocolate fondue machine, milk shakes, and more! It was a full of yummy treats!

Who won?: Congrats to Leila for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to Hawaii.   I was not surprised at all about Leila winning.  She was the last bride to show off her wedding, and I had not really thought any of the other weddings had that “wow” factor. So once I saw Leila’s I just knew she was the winning bride.   While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, all the other details – venue,  bride’s dress, and originality – really complimented Leila’s wedding theme.  The sparkle and glam was seen in all the details from the ceremony to her wedding cake. Well done Leila!  So how did the other three brides score? Melea came in second, Diana in third, and Nicole in fourth. Were you surprised by the results?  Love to hear from you, so please share!TLC

TLC’s Four Weddings Sneak Peek: September 12th

The weather has cooled off a bit, and that makes me happy. It is nice to take a little break from the summer heat. What I am also super excited for is it is time for another episode of TLC’s “Four Weddings“. Yep, I am always happy when Thursday rolls around and it means I can tune in to a show about weddings and all the lovely details that come with them.  If you have not checked out this show yet, let me tell you a bit about it.  This show features four completely different brides who have never met, and attend each other’s weddings with one wedding being deemed “the winner” at the end. The brides rate the food, dress, venue, originality, and overall experience of each wedding, except for their own. At the end, all the scores of each bride are tallied, and the one with the highest score wins an all expenses paid honeymoon. Sounds like a fun-filled show right? If you love weddings as much as I do, then I think this show is for you.TLC

On tonight’s episode the four brides are :  A road trip romance bride,  a bride who is dazzling her wedding with purple, a bride who incorporates sparkle and glamour into her wedding, and a bride who shares her many cultures with her guests at her wedding. Each of these brides share their unique style and taste on their wedding day. Which bride will be your favorite? Which bride’s detail’s will you like the best? Which dress will stand out the most? What ceremony will be the most touching? Which bride do you think will win? Make sure to check back on the site on Friday to see what I thought of the  four brides and their weddings. Oh, and you will not want to miss tonight’s episode, hammering nails into noses, and firecrackers? Yep, tune in tonight find out what that is all about!

Our lovely model was Taylor Dukes and our location was the Quail Hill Trailhead in Irvine, California. I wanted to shoot a beautiful bridal gown in a big open field because I pictured this beautiful bridal gown that is soft, romantic, with modern touches in an open field that was opposite of the couture gown. When I saw the gown on Taylor, it reminded me of a ballerina. So I chose the simple hairstyle of a bun with braids with a silver strip of lace added for decoration. The gown has so much texture to it that I didn’t want to take away from it. So the hair, makeup and accessories were kept simple. If you are wondering where the poodle came from, well a women was walking her dog and I thought it would be perfect to photograph with Taylor’s dress. I went ahead and asked the women if I can photograph the dog for the shoot, and she agreed. She was super nice and the poodle was well behaved! All in all, it was a lovely bridal shoot.

Fusion Indian Wedding Seminar Recap

A couple weekends ago, Bridal Hot List got a chance to explore the exciting culture of India at the Indian Fusion Wedding Seminar at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The event was hosted by Wedding Store 24 who transformed the patio space into a beautiful and exotic garden with multitudes of flowers interspersed with iconic Indian statues and symbols. We were surrounded in the richness of Indian culture, enjoying delicious food, pulse-pounding dances and gorgeous gowns as we learned how to incorporate ancient traditions with new American modernism.

 20130825_161236

To kick the night off, we enjoyed a cocktail hour on the patio where there was an abundance of mouth watering appetizers, and my own particular favorite being the spicy fish turnonver. Not far off was a cute bar boasting three tempting specialty cocktails. I chose a pink drink of berry vodka, raspberry liqueur, fresh lemon juice with a sugar rim. It was simply divine! After our cocktail, my guest and I had some fun at the rickshaw photo booth by L. A. Rickshaw and Souzerazzi Photo Booth. We donned oversize glasses and made numerous goofy faces at the camera which made for some memorable photo moments. The cocktail hour was intimately lit with candles, while soft live Indian music was played by Scott Cummings Music.

After the cocktail hour fun, we were ushered into the main ballroom for the seminar. The room was decorated in soft lighting with ornate light projections on the ceiling and walls. In the center, the stage was shrouded in white flower arrangements and pastel color draping. The seminar featured numerous vendor presentations about fusion invitations, beautiful wedding attire by Frontier Heritage, reception lighting and spectacular dancing by Karmagraphy. The host, comedian Rajiv Satyal, kept us laughing the entire time.

After the seminar it was time for dinner and the vendor garden. Chef Sathi Jayawardena of the Four Seasons, a Sri Lanka native, created the Indian inspired menu that was absolutely delicious. There was so much food I could not even fit it all on one plate! I’ll admit I even went back for another serving of the Coconut and Ceylon Cinnamon Saffron rice, it was that good. The vendor garden was set up in a half circle on the lawn with tables and a linen canopy in the middle. The walk through allowed us to meet with vendors for bridal jewelry, beautiful centerpiece design by Square Root, garment design, wedding registry ideas and delightful dessert options. My favorite station, however, was the Henna station. I learned it is the traditional first gift from the husband to his new bride and I even got a Henna of my own! Until it wears off, the wife does not have to lift a finger. But once it’s gone she must then begin her wifely duties.

The Fusion Indian Wedding Seminar taught us so much about Indian culture and fusion weddings. We enjoyed experiencing the traditions and culture in ways we have never seen. The richness and strength of Indian tradition is something really special and we were lucky enough to explore and learn how to cohesively fuse valued tradition with emerging modern taste.
