The All American Bride

The 4th of July is right around the corner, and with wedding season in full swing, it is no surprise that many brides are wondering how to incorporate the Independence Day festivities into their special day. However, if the idea of throwing Old Glory willy-nilly all over your wedding reception makes you want to run for the hills, don’t you worry—we will show you how to add hints of 4th flair without creating a cheesy red, white, and blue festival.

LOCATION:
It can sometimes be difficult to walk the line between cheesy and classy when incorporating a strong theme into your reception. Picking the right location for your big day can be the first step in discovering just how far you can push your theme. For example, an outdoor reception can have more of a vintage Americana feel, while a reception in a hotel ballroom might restrict you in how far you can go with your 4th of July decorations. In other words, allow the “feel” of the venue dictate the “feel” of your theme choices. There is something “American” feeling about an outdoor wedding, whether it’s on a picturesque beach, a beautiful lakeside shore, a rustic barn, or under a tree in your own backyard.

DECORATIONS:
The décor will be the most impactful way for you to add some 4th flair. The key is choosing a design aesthetic that is cohesive—the last thing you want is some random flags stuck onto your table and cutouts of fireworks taped onto the walls. A classic “Americana” or Southern shabby-chic vibe fits into a Norman Rockwell aesthetic that is perfect for Independence Day. Think plaid, gingham, old lace, burlap, and rustic wooden signs and crates—easy, comfortable, and effortless beauty. If you want to go with red, white, and blue, keep the colors subdued and distressed, never bright or tacky. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns when it comes to your table decorations—mismatched linens, tableware, and flatware can give it an old, antique feel. It should look like everything came out of an old vintage trunk found in your grandmother’s attic, not like you bought it at a party store. Vintage flags can serve as table markers at the reception, while wildflowers in porcelain and glass vases delicately enhance the table. Stringing paper lanterns and tea lights add a romantic and nostalgic flare.

Adjusted Drink Station

FOOD:
Your food choices can be a fun and creative way to add some irony and humor into your reception. This is your chance to get cheesy! “Dressed-up” comfort food is a fantastic way to keep with your theme. Bacon-wrapped dates, macaroni and cheese, barbecue, gourmet grilled cheese, sliders, popcorn, a mashed potato bar—the list goes on! Cocktail choices range from craft beer to mint juleps, and for non-alcoholic drinks, think retro favorites: Coke served in real Coke bottles, lemonade, sweet tea, root beer. Mason jars are a great way to serve your drinks, but if you are worn-out from the whole Mason jar trend, you can always mix and match old glass bottles and jars. For desserts, caramel apples, cupcakes, and traditional pies are delicious options, while a snow-cone booth is sure to add some fun and quirk to any reception. Having an outdoor reception? Make a s’mores station around a campfire!

ODDS AND ENDS:
Continue your theme before and after your wedding by having your wedding stationery reflect your Independence Day motif—mixing patterns, using vintage-inspired fonts, and keeping the colors within the subdued color palette from your reception. You can also use the same type of stationery for writing your thank you notes. Wedding favors for your guests could be confetti poppers, sparklers, vintage flags, or even canned preserves from a local farm. Finish off your night with a private fireworks show or by driving off in a classic pick up truck or vintage car.

Finally, it is important to remember why we celebrate the 4th of July, and a great way to do that is by giving back. On your wedding registry, present your guests with the option of donating to a charity of your choice. There are several fantastic organizations that benefit veterans, soldiers, and military families. On your special day, nothing speaks more towards the spirit of the American people than giving back to those who helped us secure our freedom and those who are fighting to keep it intact.

TLC’s Four Weddings Winning Bride: June 13th

Good morning weekenders!  What a gorgeous day it is here at BHL. What is going on outside, well, I will enjoy that a bit later, but for now,  we have the winner of TLC’s “Four Weddings” from this week’s episode. A wonderful Saturday indeed.  The winning bride from Thursday’s episode is Megan! Congrats to this bride and her beautifully planned Southern wedding.  Her vintage and lace wedding scored her a total of 88 points out of 120 points. Here is the breakdown.

Venue: 26 points
Dress:  15 points
Experience: 21points
Food: 26 points

The other three brides really liked the venue and food the best, as she scored the highest in these two categories. The venue was at an old Plantation. Perfect for her vintage Southern wedding. The ceremony took place outside in a gorgeous setting.  All the beautiful details of the old world charm was evident in this venue.  I really loved this venue as well. The ceremony space set outside, and the stunning tent for the outside reception was perfect for this Southern bride. Just lovely.

The food. Well since I can not account for the food, since I was not there to taste it, but from the score of the other brides, it seems that her food was a hit. Good tasting food is such an important element of a wedding. It can it can either leave guests happy and satisfied, or unhappy and starving. So great job Megan for providing something tasty and delicious for your guests to enjoy at your wedding.

Congrats to Megan for winning an all expenses paid honeymoon. After all the planning of her vintage and Southern wedding, together with her husband, she is ready to pack her bags, and journey to a place of relaxation and luxury. Sounds like a great time. Enjoy and have a lovely time Megan, you deserve it!

Hello, my name is Mandy and I design retro and vintage inspired wedding stationery. I love to create quirky, colourful invites for brides and grooms looking for something a bit different to the norm. I have many types of stationary, however I love working closely with brides and grooms to create something completely bespoke and unique to them. Because everything is designed by me, every aspect can be personalised with colour changes/images/extras to be exactly what my clients want. All of my paper goods can be adapted to feature on Save the Date magnets and bookmarks, invites, RSVPs, thank you cards, candy buffet signage, luggage tags and place settings.

I was married in June 2012. I knew exactly what kind of stationery I wanted in my head but could not find anyone that created it, so I decided to do it on my own. I found I really enjoyed making them, and after my wedding, I received many compliments.  Someone asked if I can design something for their wedding too. Since I enjoyed designing so much for own wedding, I  decided to set up Peaches and Queen, and  share my designs with other brides to be.

My style is heavily inspired by retro and vintage styles from a bygone era. I have always been drawn to works from artists from the 50s and 60s and love nothing more than rummaging around antique fayres and boot sales for kitsch and quirky items for my home. Being surrounded by these things everyday has led me to try and carry this theme across many of my works.  I have my “Betsy” perfect for a 50s prom queen bride, “Alice” with its subtle Alice in Wonderland style as well as many other vintage inspired ranges, rich in pastel colours and lace. Another favourie of mine is birds. So, many of my works will feature them.  In fact I am slightly bird obsessed loosely having a bird theme at my own wedding. The height of kitsch also has to be my Jasmine invite, perfect for the bride travelling abroad who doesnt want to compromise on a fab style. Although many of my invites are digital prints I can also adapt some of them to be even more special with the addition of pearls, sparkles and real lace.

Although there is a strong vintage trend that has been running through the wedding industry for a few years now, I have always had a love of vintage items so I design what  I find visually pleasing to me rather then moulding it to current trends. I do really enjoy creating rustic pieces, and my new “Poppy” range combines rustic brown kraft card with lace really well. I also “tea dye” my own luggage tags and hand stamp and personalise them – there are so many different combinations possible!

I hope to keep creating and introduce many exciting new stationary over time. I also hope to introduce other beautiful venue styling items to my website over time such as handmade bunting and handmade favours.

Thank you Peaches and Queen for all the vintage inspired lovelies. I am head over heels!

Wedding Florals and Design: Maret Designs

Nothing gets me excited for spring quite like gorgeous florals and pops of fresh pastels. So, you can imagine the joy I had when the happiest of hues of pinks, greens, purples, peaches, and yellows, landed in my inbox. I’m swooning big-time over the wildly gorgeous florals and creations by Maret Designs. By now, you probably have guessed that I have a huge love for vintage elements, and when they are combined with weddings, my heart is blissful. Maret Designs has won my heart over with their simple, elegant, and vintage style that pours into each design.

BAR_1775-EditI am in love with the bouquets for this beautiful bride and her bridesmaids. Simple and soft. Compliments perfectly with the spring inspired dresses.

A dinner reception set up with pops of lovely pink roses. As they say, less is more. It works! Simple, yet elegant and charming. How can you not be happy when you sit here for dinner? I know I would be pretty content. DSC_8413-Edit

How sweet is this? Florals in a jar and table number in one? This equals pure originality. Oh, and do you see the wood piece it is sitting on? So rustic and lovely!

Spring brings seriously gorgeous flowers to the table. Literally!  I am in love with all the vibrant colors that pop everywhere on this elegant setting. If I was having dinner here, I would not eat. I would be way to distracted by the lovely florals. I could stare at this all day. All day.

From Defining Moments by Sheri Marie…

Meet Vanessa Fontana & Ben Hanley. Vanessa is from Alaska and Ben is from Washington State. They met in High School when Vanessa moved to Washington State. This couple is very hip, elegant, and loves everything vintage. So they wanted their engagement session to represent every aspect of their personalities and what their wedding will be like.  Vanessa and Ben wanted two different scenes. One for a vintage picnic and the other one for some fun sunset shots. Vanessa loves everything vintage, but yet she has this elegant side to her as well. So she wanted her picnic theme to reflect all the inspiration photos that she had been searching for on Pinterest. They also wanted a nice location that was close to the beach.  We chose the Malibu State Park and El Matador Beach as the perfect locations.

From the moment Vanessa emailed me wanting me to do her engagement photos, we had an instant connection. She was very excited that I was available to do her photos and excited that we had the same style and vision for her session. So that made me even more excited to work with her and Ben because we were all on the same page. Spending the afternoon with these two was a ton of fun! You can definitely see the love these two share between the two of them, as it just radiates off. Their love is contagious! The whole shoot I was wishing my husband was there so I could just give him a big kiss, haha.  Ben and Vanessa are very down to earth, chill and fun! We were all laughing and joking around all day, which made for a great time together!

They will be tying the knot on July 27, 2013 in Washington State.

A Valentine’s Day Photo Shoot: Romantic Looks for the Day

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today you have an excuse to get all dolled up, put on that new outfit, and spend the day with the one you love. A couple weeks ago I had an idea to create a Valentine’s Day inspired photo shoot. So I got together with wardrobe stylist, Connie Kim from Styled by Connie. She was thrilled about the idea, and quickly we came up with a concept. Our goal was to inspire and show how to incorporate vintage and modern elements combined to create soft, romantic outfits for a Valentine’s Day date. The idea was to keep with a clean and sophisticated style and use a color palette consisting of muted tones with pops of bright colors.

Here are five fabulous looks for Valentine’s day:

  “Sophisticated Dinner Date”

Here is a look which takes elements of old “Hollywood Glam” styling. Incorporating a high-waist laced skirt, with a peach top for an added pop of color. All paired with nude closed-toe pumps to tie in soft and sophisticated features. Accessories includes a dainty long gold and pearl chain necklace with a black handbag. Confidant and sophisticated, and ready to hit the town!

“Casual Boho Chic Date”

Here is a look inspired by the hot pink maxi skirt. Which by the way, is a 2013 color trend for Spring/Summer. Staying true to the “boho chic” look, the skirt  is paired with a loose white blouse, black laced crop top,  and Grecian inspired accessories.  To complete the whole look, a pair of fun and bold colorful shoes are added.  Stylish and chic, and perfect for a beach-side date.

“Monochromatic Vintage Dinner Date”

This look was brought together by all monochromatic tones of nude. To give it some edge, the pop of plum shoes and studded detail wrist tie is added. The headpiece and high-waisted dress gives the look a vintage feel. This sweet and adorable outfit can be worn for a lovely dinner date.

“Paris for the Night”

An absolute fave! Black and white stripes are coming back into trend for 2013. A Parisian inspired look was created. Staying true to classic French fashion, the dress is sheer and flow-y, combined with bright red heels and a pop of red lipstick. Keeping with a vintage inspired look, the white headpiece ties the ensemble all together.  This amazing look is perfect for a date at your favorite cafe, and sharing a pastry with your love.

St. Regis Wedding from Paul Barnett Photography

What a better way to start the week than with a look into a romantic wedding set at the gorgeous St. Regis Resort  in Monarch Beach, California.  Melting over the plush flower arrangements, a phenomenal dove release, and lavish gifts for the guests, this wedding stops me in my tracks. I can not get over all the fabulous details of this wedding!  Effortlessly planned and designed by Scott Corridan, where modern meets vintage with hint of romance, this wedding has me head over heels. A perfect romantic affair!

Paul Barnett Photography captures all the love and sweetness of this wedding. If you are a hopeless romantic like I am, then you will absolutely love the images.

Words from the gorgeous bride…

We chose the St Regis after touring 20-30 venues from Santa Barbara to San Diego. I had a long checklist, and the St Regis came the closest to meeting it. After 10 months of planning, 7 trips to the venue, and of course our weekend of events, we were thrilled with our choice. The location was stunning, the food was excellent, and the service was unbeatable!

We had 85 guests, most of which traveled from Canada. They were greeted at their accomodations with a welcome package from Mark and I which included a hand written note,  a timeline for the weekend, a list of things to do in the area, cookies from a local bakery called Three Hearts Bake Shop (which people are STILL talking about), and a few goodies to remember the event including personalized m&m’s, wine charms, and some SPF lotion to protect from that hot California sun. We chose not to do traditional wedding favors.

We chose Tiffany blue, white, and pearl white as our wedding colors. And they came together beautifully. I guess if you had to give our wedding a theme it would considered modern traditional vintage romance.

We were married on July 7th at 6 o’clock on the evening in the botanical gardens. The night before the wedding our guests enjoyed a cocktail party, and the morning after, a one of a kind St. Regis brunch. Our ceremony was short. About 30 minutes. As guests left the ceremony, they were greeted by wait staff with champagne, and escorted to the botanical lawn where they enjoyed a cocktail hour, as we took our photos. Dinner started at 8, and the night concluded around 2am. We did not want to have any gaps in the day for guests left with nothing to do. So it transitioned smoothly from beginning to end.

We had many surprises for our guests including a 1962 white rolls Royce, a string quartet including a harpist, hand written vows, tears of joy tissues, sandalwood fans, a dove release, tray passed pashminas for the ladies, and cigars for the gentleman, a dress change, choreographed first dance, white Havaianas for dancing, and a shuttle ride home to prevent drinking and driving.

We also had certain touches that only had meaning to some. We had a candle memorial for all our relatives that had passed. It was just a small glass cylinder filled with water, and a candle, with the names of our relatives engraved. If you didn’t know about it, you probably wouldn’t have even noticed it. Each guests menu also had their name printed on it, and the kids menus had pictures and activities for coloring, complete with crayons.

I was very specific about everything at our wedding, including the food. I insisted that all of the food including the salad be stacked. Guests also enjoyed a variety of tray passed hors deovres during cocktail hour. Dinner began with a caprese salad with olive tapenade, followed by a crab cake appetizer. The main course was a choice of Barmundi Sea Bass, Parmesan and Mustard crusted Chicken, or a Petite Filet. All mains were served stacked with honey glazed carrots, broccoli, spinach, potato gratin, and a jumbo prawn. We concluded dinner with champagne, and a desert of a handmade edible white & milk chocolate bowl filled with vanilla bean ice cream, an assortment of seasonal berries, and a raspberry purée. Topped with a caramel peanut brittle.

Our cake was a 3 tier round cake with plain white fondant. Each tier was separated by a floral insert. What was unique about it was that only a small portion  of the cake was actually cake. The rest was a form covered in fondant. We wanted a cake to display, and to do the traditional cutting of the cake, but didn’t want to serve cake to our guests, or waste the cake.

Our florals were one of the biggest line items in our budget. I wanted flowers everywhere!!!! My bouquet was so heavy I could barely carry it, but it was so amazing! We used 3 species of orchids, hydrangea, lilies, roses, and calla lilies, all white, with hints of summer green. We had pommodor balls lining the aisle, and well as scrolls of petals. All the guests tossed petals during our recessional. And the gazebo was covered in arrangements as well. Each guests place setting had a single orchid bloom tucked into their napkin, many of which ended up in the hair of our female guests, which was fun. Our centre pieces were show stopping. The were enormous 3×1 foot glass vases topped with huge replicas of my bouquet. The vases were filled with water, and there were white orchids coiled inside.

Our first dance was Kiss to build a dream on by Louis Armstrong.

We skipped out on the traditional bouquet, and garter toss, as it wasn’t really our style. We kept the speeches and toasts short and sweet, and they were concluded by a multimedia presentation by my brother that included video messages from our family and friends that weren’t able to attend the wedding.

I wore a champagne lace strapless Rivini with a modified sweetheart neckline, an Erin Cole Birdcage veil, Miriam Haskell, and Lagos pearls, and Christian Louboutin peeptoe pumps. My girls wore asymmetrical Lynn Lugo dresses in Tiffany blue, and Pink Valentinos. And Mark wore a Grey Canali suit with subtle Tiffany blue pinstripes, and Gucci shoes.

The day was designed, organized and carried out by Scott Corridan, captured by Paul Barnett, of Paul Barnett Photography, and filmed by Curtis Heyne of Living Cinema, all along with their incredibly wonderful teams.

It was an absolutely perfect day, with incredible vendors, and the best husband a girl could ask for.
