Five Great Rules for the Groom’s Speech

While there might be a lot of attention on the Best Man’s speech during a wedding reception, the speech that really counts from the groom’s side is from the groom himself. There are weddings where the groom forgets completely to make a speech of his own, which in most industry circles, is a huge no-no. If you are a groom, check out our top rules for your speech. If you happen to be a bride, you might want to forward this article to your husband-to-be because you never know if this is one of those small details he might forget about!

Tip One: Thank Everybody First

While you will want to talk about your new wife, or perhaps how great your groomsmen are, you should always lead off by thanking everyone for showing up. Remember that people often get many wedding invitations throughout the year and also make plans, but they decided to come to your wedding, get you and your wife a gift, and enjoy in your big day, so be sure to thank them. Make sure they know how much you appreciate their attendance, and how their friendship and love mean so much to you both.

Tip Two: Don’t Get Hammered

When people drink, they say really stupid stuff. That’s a fact of nature. While we do not recommend drinking at all during your wedding or the reception, in order to maximize the amount of fun you will have, if you decide to partake in a few rounds, know your limits. The last thing you want to do is get up in front of a bunch people and make a fool of yourself on the biggest day of you and your wife’s life. Slurred speech, cursing, and inappropriate topics are just some of the dangers that alcohol could present during your speech. Making a mistake of that magnitude is something everyone will remind you about for the rest of your life!

Tip Three: Pace Yourself

Many people are nervous speaking to crowds, so grooms should first reflect that feeling nervous or anxious is perfectly normal and that everyone feels those emotions. To combat this, many people get through their speech absolutely as quickly as possible by speaking at a virtual hundred words per second. Slow down! Let the words come to you! A well paced speech comes off as extremely sincere and heartfelt. These are the emotions you want to convey when giving your speech. If you hurry through it, the speech certainly won’t have the impact you hope it will.

Tip Four: Practice

While you do not want to sound rehearsed, grooms should practice their speech. This way they can hear things out loud and immediately know if it’s a good topic and comes across the way they want it to, rather than “winging it” which is what an amateur would do. The best speeches never sound rehearsed but actually are very much so, because good public speakers use pacing and intonation of certain words to convey sincerity. Don’t be afraid to take one of your groomsmen and bounce the speech off of them and ask for input. That way, you have your bases covered in case your missed something.

Tip Five: Be Sure To Complement Your New Wife At Least A Dozen Times

While you might thank everyone for coming first, you must thank your new bride at least a dozen times. Okay, maybe not that many, but be sure to thank her at least three times as much as anyone else. She deserves it! Most brides do the majority of the planning and deserve all the credit in the world for pulling off such a great event. Plus, it’ll make you look great in front of everyone since you are so honest in sharing your love with everyone (you better be!). Finally, be sure to close by thanking your new wife and telling her just how perfect she is because the entire day, remember, is all about you two and your new bond of love.

Rustic Urban SmogShoppe Los Angeles Wedding

When it comes to a DIY wedding, it is not so easy. It takes blood, sweat, tears, and whole lot of love and energy infused into each and every detail. It can be fabulous or look like a craft project. But I have to tell you, this rustic urban wedding is no craft project. Oh no. This wedding is absolutely stunning. And all beautifully designed by the couple.   From the Marigold and Grey color scheme, the ridiculously gorgeous table settings, and the lovely escort cards, this is a true handmade wedding. It is all about showing the love you have for each other through the amazing details. When you have a lovely DIY wedding combined with an incredible photographer like Michael Segal Photography, then it is a pretty stellar wedding.  When the first image from this rustic urban wedding  popped up on my computer screen, within a nano second, I knew I wanted to feature this wedding. With each and every image that followed, my mouth dropped so hard, I had to force it shut! I could not believe the images I was viewing.  Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to browse through the stunning photos of this lovely affair.

From the Grooms, Joe & Sunny…

We wanted our wedding style to reflect our personalities and cultures. Our ceremony had a mix of Western and Indian traditions. We had a gospel choir to reflect Joe’s Christian upbringing and faith. We exchanged jai malas (flower garlands) to include Indian wedding customs since Sunny is Indian. We all walked out to the choir singing, “Seasons of Love” from Rent.

We chose a rustic urban theme and that’s why we chose SmogShoppe because it wasn’t your typical wedding venue and reflected our style. We also did a lot of DIY stuff, such as our escort cards and table settings. We worked hand in hand with our florist, Twig & Twine and we were able to find vintage hobnob vases for the centerpieces that guests were able to take home. We also found awesome vintage letter light up marquees that added a great personal touch to our reception.

We had a cocktail hour with a blue grass band and we served mac and cheese balls, samosas and vegan sliders. One of our favorite bands is Pink Martini, so we made sure there were plenty martinis during cocktail hour. In addition we had three other speciality drinks – Tipsy Arnold Palmer, Sita Margarita and the Bees Knees. Food is a big part of our lives, vegetarian food in particular. We had Cashew Creme Lasagna, Potatoes Au Gratin, Vegan Celebration Loaf, Quinoa Alfresco Greens with peaches and almonds. Not to exclude our carnivore friends, we had Boneless Apricot Rosemary Chicken with mango salsa. Our cake was 3 layered with strawberry, lemon and coconut flavors.

We really valued all our friends and guests presence at our wedding and didn’t want anyone to feel left out at the dinner table, so we set our tables as long picnic tables (in addition to the head table) where everyone sat close to each other and ate as one big family. We also had a surprise dinner performance by a local Bollywood Troupe that mixed together some fun Bollywood songs.

Our first dance was a mashup of Adele’s rendition of “Make you feel my love” and Gossip’s, “Men in Love”. This really got the crowd to the dance floor and they stayed there all night! We stayed away from the perennial wedding favorites like the chicken dance etc. we really collaborated with our DJ to come up with a list that reflected our eclectic taste in music. We had booked an ice cream cart and weren’t sure if it would be too much food, but in the end it was a good decision because it was one of the hottest days of the year! So with all the dancing, it was a nice touch.

Five Beauty Treatments to Skip Before Engagement Photos

Newly engaged? It’s time to show off a fresh face and document this epic time in your life! If you have a big photo op on the horizon, you’re going to want to do what you can to look your best. However, there are a few things that you should probably skip before taking lots of photos. Here’s our list of what to put on the back burner for now.

Skip the Facials

Even if you’re a regular at the spa, you may want to skip the facials. You don’t want to risk any bad reactions or irritated skin when you have a photo op on the horizon. If you feel like your skin does need a little love, try a clay or mud mask. Stick to organic and non-irritable (nothing acidic!) skin treatments so there’s no chance you’ll break out or get patchy.

Stick to Shaving

On that note, now is not the time to get waxed! If you’ll have some skin showing, it’s best to keep it looking as smooth as possible. In the same vein as skipping facials to avoid any unwanted reaction, you should also foreo waxing for a while. Even if you go to the same beautician every time, you don’t want to risk a bad experience. Your skin needs to be as flawless as possible, don’t take risks. 1Biotin.jpg.jpg

Serious New Supplements

Vitamins like fish oil, vitamin D, and Biotin can be a great addition to your diet, but skip starting them until all the pictures are done! Introducing a new vitamin into your routine can break you out- or even in some cases make you nauseous. Biotin and other hair and nail supplements have been known to break people out when they are first introduced into a sensitive system. It’s best to not make any drastic changes to your diet just yet- enjoy being engaged in your own skin for a while!

1Trim.jpg.jpg

Trim Out the Trim

Skip getting any haircuts, even if you’re just planning on a tiny trim, until after the pictures are taken. It can be easy to get swept up in feeling creative while you’re in a stylist’s chair, but you may not want that look to be documented. Try to save any changes to your look until after engagement photos. That way, you’ll have time to perfect your new look before the big day or change it if you don’t love it.

Re-Schedule That Root Canal

Put off any dental work until after all photos are done. Treatments that numb your face can cause you to make funny faces, and not all in the cute way. Unless you’re just going in for a quick cleaning the day before, you really want to keep anything major until you’re free from the flashing lights. No one likes a puffy numb mouth, and being uncomfortable could distract you from looking adorable.

They have been selected for inclusion Style Me Pretty’s “Little Black Book” and Grace Ormonde’s “Platinum List.” Their work has appeared in “Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings” and WE TV series “My Fair Wedding with David Tutera”.

10 Helpful Honeymoon Packing Tips

The wedding is over and now it’s time to bask in the warmth of newlywed bliss.  It’s honeymoon time! The last thing you want on your honeymoon is to worry if you packed adequately for the trip.  Just like planning a wedding, getting ready for the honeymoon will ensure you are prepared and leave you stress free.  It’s important to start packing early and research your destination well before hand in case you need to buy any additional items.  We’ve compiled 10 useful tips to help make packing for your honeymoon a breeze!

1. Check the weather.  Research your destination to get a sense of the weather during the season of your visit.  This way you will not be caught off guard by the variances in your destination’s weather

2. Expect the unexpected.  The thing about traveling is that you can never be certain of what to expect when you get there.  That is why it’s important to pack at least one out of season outfit.  If you go to a tropical place pack a warmer outfit just to be safe, etc.

3. Chargers!  Do not forget your chargers.  Whether they be camera, computer or phone chargers make sure you pack the right chargers.  You will want to capture every special moment exploring a new place with your husband, so pack those chargers.

4. Check in with your family.  Before you leave, send your family members the itinerary for your trip.  This ensures they know where you will be should any unforeseen incidents occur.  This will ease the worries of loved ones while ensuring your safety as well.

5. Medicine cabinet. You don’t know how your body is going to react when you visit a new place so it’s nice to have some basic medications on hand.  Travel size aspirin and allergy medication. Tums and Eye drops are a great start to a basic medicine travel kit.  Feel free to add other medicines, depending upon your location and the activities you have planned.

6. Get organized.  A few days before the wedding gather all the necessary paperwork, tickets, identification, and money you need for the trip.  Pack it into your honeymoon suitcase so you guarantee you won’t forget anything.

7. The great outdoors.  Pack the clothes you will need for any outdoor activities.  That could be hiking, biking or even just laying by the pool.  Don’t forget your running shoes! Not only are they practical but they are so comfy!

8. Toiletries. Designate one of your carry ons for toiletries.  Must haves: toothbrush, hairbrush, sunscreen, toothpaste, lotion, tampons, hair products and razor. Try to buy travel size when you can and pack well because you don’t want to be left searching for a store.

9. Contraception.  This is important if pregnancy is not on your immediate to do list.  Assure your prescriptions are filled and the proper contraception bought ahead of time.

10. Store the bling.  Bring something to store your rings in when you have to take them off.  For example, you might not want to wear your ring while snorkeling or doing any sort of strenuous activity.  Bring something you use to hide your ring inside your suitcase or hotel safe.

Happy Honeymooning!

Five Things to Remember for Save the Dates

Are you in super planning mode? Be sure to pay attention to the details and not forget any of these five vital components of your save the dates!

Return Labels

Neither you nor your fiance will want to hand write out your address for every single envelope. You know that sounds like a wrist cramp waiting to happen. Instead, go to a printing website and design your own for the occasion. You can do a set in neutral colors so you can reuse them for thank you notes or just regular mail. If you’re pretty much settled in your home, you can invest in a custom stamp with your names and address.

List your Loved Ones

Be sure to have an outline of all the people who will be receiving save the dates so you know how many to order, and how many supplies you’ll need. It can be handy for you to get a feel for your guest list as well. Keep it all on a spreadsheet or listed in your bridal book for reference. You can also use it to check people off as you send your save the dates out.

Double, No, Triple Check It

These are going out to all your loved ones and will be a keepsake from one of the greatest events of your life. Make sure it’s right. Have a friend check your work before you get them printed- another set of eyes can sometimes catch mistakes you can’t see. Be sure all addresses are right and all times are correct (with AM or PM specified). Do a name and address check with your loved ones list as well- just in case.

Invest in Forever Stamps

Forever stamps are always a good purchase for anything. You want to be sure to pick up a few sheets of them for all your save the dates- and even your invites and thank you’s while you’re at it. You can find cute ones with neutral images like flowers and birds typically at the post office or ATM. Some websites let you customize your own stamps with your own images, which is more expensive but would be a fantastic touch to your save the dates.

Make It Yours

Remember, it’s not purely informational. Make it personal with photos of you and your fiance and maybe a few images that are reminiscent of you as a couple. Be sure to either sign or put in a small message for your save the dates to give them a  personal touch. The little touches make people feel that much more cared for, and can go farther  than you may realize.
