Five Tips For Throwing and Engagement Party

Engagement parties are a fun way to celebrate and share the news with all of your family and friends.  Whether the party is extravagant or small and intimate, here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction.

Location

There are lots of fun places to have the party.  Decide whether you want a large or intimate event before you pick the location.  A backyard or yacht is a great place for an intimate gathering. You can go big in a ballroom or estate. Either way, first consider the size and grandeur of your wedding.  The engagement party shouldn’t upstage the wedding, but instead should compliment it.

Who to Invite

According to ancient engagement party etiquette, you are only supposed to invite guests who are also invited to your wedding.  However, if you are having a small wedding you might want to invite more friends to the engagement party who won’t be attending the wedding.  This is also an opportunity for your parents to invite friends they may want to share in the celebration.

When to Have It

Engagement parties generally happen within three months of the proposal.  They are generally thrown by the bride’s family but a friend or member of the bridal party may throw one as well.  If you are planning a long engagement then plan your party no less than nine months before the wedding.

What to Serve

Don’t feel as though you have to serve an extravagant meal at your engagement party.  The food you serve is a great opportunity to showcase who you are as a couple. Choose the food that reflects both of your favorite foods for the appetizers and desserts.  This is a fun way to give an overview of the couple and what similarities or differences attract you to each other.

Gifts?

Gifts are not usually expected at an engagement party,  however if there are people coming who know they will not be able to make the wedding, then gifts are a definite possibility.  You can create a registry just in case someone asks your parents what to get you.  It doesn’t have to be the large wedding registry but just something small for the gifts you may receive.

Five Wedding Thank You Note Tips

Writing “thank you’s” can be a task that couples put off for months. But, you really want to write and send them off within 3-4 months of the wedding date. So, start early and send them off as soon as possible! You can write them when you are on the plane heading to your honeymoon, especially if you have a long flight ahead of you! But make sure that you keep them in a safe place. Whatever day you choose, make it as fun as you can! Throw on your favorite jam and enjoy some music while you write.

Now, who gets a thank you note? Don’t worry, we have the answer right here:

  1. Thank you to all guests who gave you a gift for  the bridal shower, engagement, and wedding event: You want to always designate someone to write down the names of those who gave you gifts. So while you are opening the gifts, that person can write the gift with the person’s name. It is a good idea to mention the gift that the person got you. You want to also mention how excited you are for the gift. So for example, if someone got you a juicer, you can say ” Michael and I can not wait to make some fresh juice with our new juicer!” Make it personal.
  2. Thank you notes to parents: If one or more parents hosted the wedding, you want to send them a nice thank you card. You may want to even get a little gift to go with it.  In addition to a thank you card, make sure to thank them at your wedding reception.
  3. Thank you to hosts of wedding events: You really want make sure a thank you note is sent to hosts of the bridal shower, engagement party, and wedding itself (if parents are not hosting). This thank you card is not just for the person putting the event together, but the person who is providing their home. So make sure that Aunt Mary gets a thank you card for the bridal shower that cousin Anne threw for you.
  4. Thank you to bridal party:  Say thanks to the bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girl, ring bearer, and anyone who is part of that wedding party. You may also want to get a personal gift to attach the thank you card to. The groom can get something for his boys, and brides, you can get something lovely for your girls. Add a little bit love to the thank you card. Your bridal party will love it!
  5. Thank you to vendors:  If there is a vendor that has gone above and beyond for you and your wedding, then a thank you card will be a nice way to show your appreciation. Your vendors are your photographers, caterer, videographers, florist,  cake designers, or anyone that provided some type of service for your wedding day. They love to hear from you, and receive that thank you card.

A little note of thank you can mean a million bucks to someone. So grab your favorite black or blue ink pen, and get going!

Five Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

If you have your heart set on somewhere beautiful outside your neighborhood for your wedding, no worries. Destination weddings are a great option for couples who can afford it and have the will to travel. Before you start spinning the globe and day-dreaming about currency exchange stations, check out our top tips for planning your destination wedding.

1. Set Your Date Wisely

Have you dreamed about Hawaii in the summer? You’re not alone. Aiming for off-seasons can help cut your costs considerably. If you’re planning on taking anyone with you (such as family or friends), you’ll want to find a property that can accommodate everyone. If you’re unsure about when the off-season is, look at hotel rates for different dates on hotel booking sites like Expedia or Hotels.com. If you’re noticing a pattern of lower rates one weekend over another, that’ll be a more cost-effective time to get hitched. Since you’ll most likely have guests going to the wedding with you, you should ensure that it will be as affordable as possible for them as well. Keep in mind that there may be local events going on that could cause a busy weekend; for example Washington D.C. has a cherry blossom festival annually which causes just as much tourist traffic as the summer does. Do your research and your wallet will thank you later.

2. Warn Your Family

It will be smart to plan very much ahead for destination weddings- we’re talking a few months. Not everyone may be able to afford to travel for a wedding, but if you give your loved ones enough time they may be able to save. If you price out flights, hotels, and rental cars (if needed) in advance and show the costs to your guests, they will be more likely to attend. If you’ll need to save extra, your family and friends may need to as well.

3. Do Your Research

It is wise to at least have visited the place you’d like to get married before you get there. You may day-dream about Cabo and not feel the magic once you hit the beach, and you don’t want to risk that. Be sure it’s a place that you and your fiance both love. If it’s been a few years since you’ve visited your dream destination, take a weekend off with your love and check it out. It’s a nice excuse for a vacation (but honey- it’s wedding research!) plus you may find some unexpected finds nearby.

4. Block It Out

If you’ve settled on a location and a hotel, get in touch with the sales manager at the hotel. If you contact them directly and let them know that you’ll have some friends and family coming out with you for your special day, they may do some extra work for you. A hotel sales manager wants to make sure that your (and your loved ones’) experience is as excellent as possible- they want to make it easy on you. They may be able to set up a block of rooms so your guests are all on the same floor or area. They may also (and this may be an advanced move- but it can be done!) be able to set up special lower rates since you’re guaranteeing them a solid amount of room nights. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s worth a shot. If they are unable to accommodate you, they may be able to offer suggestions for other properties as well.

5. Plan Ahead

If there’s one unexpected storm, you and your wedding party are landlocked. It may be a long shot if you’ve got your dates planned right, but there’s no harm in setting up a safety net. If you’re flying or driving, plan on leaving at least 1-2 days before your wedding events start so you have that time to settle in and get ready. Do what you can to not book the last flight of the night- if an earlier one gets bumped you can always go stand-by on the next one. Have a few hundred on retainer in case you need to move your flight with short notice. You would not want your luggage to get lost and show up to your wedding a day late.

The Lab and The Camp Engagement Session from Happy Photos

You know by now that I am in love with engagement sessions. I really LOVE them! But, this one has a special place in my heart. The locations are set at the famous, Anti-Mall (the Lab), and the Camp in Costa Mesa, California. A place that you would find me in my college years, studying in the funky courtyard, with unique little details all around. It was the perfect place to study and feel relaxed. These days I visit both of these fabulous locations when I want a bite to eat. I can literally spend hours at either of these locations. Good food, and good ambiance. I can see why this adorable couple chose these unique locations for their e-session. It fits their personalities, and brings out a certain joy and love which is totally obvious in the images below. See how Happy Photos captured the sweet love these two show off in each and every image. You may want to grab your coffee, and sit down for this one. Its a pretty good one!

Meet Shauna and Greg. Shauna is the marketing director at Scott’s Resturant, and Greg is a school teacher. When I asked  them about their engagement session, they told me that they  wanted something out of the ordinary. (So, no beach or park location). But rather they wanted a location which fit their fun and quirky personalities! The Lab and the Camp in Costa Mesa was the perfect location for these two love birds. Each spot had a unique detail about it, and the couple seemed to fit right in. There were some pretty amazing spots to take photographs at both of these locations. Shauna and Greg made my job easy. They were so much fun to work with, and I could not help but smile behind the lens.  Congrats to Shauna and Greg!

Five Ways to Share An Engagement

You’re engaged!  Congratulations and now it’s time to share the news with family and friends.  Instead of the traditional phone call, why not take this opportunity to be creative and have a little fun.  That’s what we’re here for!  Check out these five fun ways to announce your engagement.

Engagement Announcement

Family First.   This one is for the guys.  If family is of the utmost importance to you as a couple,  then why not include them in the engagement process?   Invite them to join in the moment when you ask the woman you love to become your wife.  It’s a great opportunity to surprise and show her how much you love her.

Create a Page.  The new thing for modern couples is to create your own wedding website.  There are various sites that allow you to create a couple profile and keep your guests informed on important dates.  This way your friends can track  your journey to “I do”.

A Trip to the Movies.  For you movie buffs, now is your opportunity to recreate your favorite movie poster.  Photoshop is a wonderful thing.  You can even take it a step further and recreate your favorite romantic scene from a movie to play for a group of friends.

Game Night. Get your family together for a game night.  Choose something like Pictionary or Charades that will keep your friends guessing as you act out “We’re Engaged”.  Prepare for screaming, cheering, crying and a whole lot of love.

A Personal Touch.  Announcing to the world may not be quite your style and we have the perfect solution! Take the person or people you want to tell out for Starbucks, offer to buy the drinks why he/she saves a table.  Ask the barista to write “I’m Engaged” or “I said Yes” on the cup instead of a name.  This is how I was asked to be my friend’s maid of honor, and what a surprise it was!

No matter the way you reveal your engagement it will be a time of celebration and love.  Take advantage of this special time to share the love you’ve found with family and friends in ways you will remember for years to come.

Oregon Winter Engagement Session from Jaime Davis Photography

So, I am a Southern California girl, who is in total love with this winter engagement session. I don’t typically like the snowy type of weather, but there is something magical about this e-session that has won my warm California heart. This lovely winter scene with snow capped trees, and surrounded by freshly fallen snow is totally dreamy. The couple? Do I have to even mention how adorable they are? They are so obviously in love while surrounded by white beauty, that it doesn’t get more pretty than this!  All captured so gorgeously by Jaime Davis Photography. Thank you to an incredible photographer like Jaime Davis Photography for opening my heart to this lovely winter snowy day. Smiling from cheek to cheek.

From Jaime Davis Photography

Kate and James were engaged over the summer of 2011 and got married July 2012. Kate is my best friend and while I was visiting her this winter in Oregon after they had a HUGE snow storm, I thought it would be fun to take some engagement photos since they did not have the chance to do that before their wedding. Kate and James loved the idea, and could not wait to get started. We headed to Mount Bachelor where it was about 15 degrees out. Yes, it was pretty cold, but I had such a blast capturing photos of such a lovely couple in such a gorgeous place, that I forgot how cold it really was. Kate and James are such a fun couple, that this e-session made me smile behinds the lens. It was a cold, but beautiful day!

Top Five Island Honeymoon Destinations

Going on an island honeymoon is the dream of just about every newlywed couple. An island offers gorgeous beaches, exotic foods, and privacy. Many couples just assume that Hawaii is the best place to go and that is where they book their trip. While Hawaii just might be the best spot on Earth, there are multiple islands that make up the Hawaiian Islands, as well as many other amazing destinations you can look into. Here are our Top Five Island Honeymoon destinations!

#1 – Bora Bora, Society Islands

Bora Bora is in the Society Islands of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef and in the center of the island is the remnants of an extinct volcano with two peaks. A major tourist destination, the island has a permanent population of just under 9,000 inhabitants. There are many resorts that have sprung up over the last ten years, with Hotel Bora Bora being the first resort to feature over-water bungalows. You can get to Bora Bora on flights with Air Tahiti.

#2 –  Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea and is northwest of Barbados. It has a population over 174,000 and the official language spoken is English. What makes Saint Lucia so amazing are the pristine beaches, cobalt blue oceans, and the amazing lush green landscape inside the interior of the island, which includes a few golf courses. The island nation is home to some of the best resorts in the world, with plenty of water-sports activities and island tours to whet your appetite for adventure.

#3 – Bali, Indonesia

Bali is an island and the smallest of the provinces that make up Indonesia. It is described as a paradise with a spiritual nature, along with earning the reputation as having the best surf in the entire world. The population of Bali is 3.8 million and most of the residents practice Balinese Hinduism. The island is well known for its well developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. There are many amazing resorts to enjoy the surf, sand, and culture of this haven.

#4 – Manafaru, Maldives

Manafaru is one of the islands that makes up the Republic of Maldives. This small island is more like a giant resort, featuring 83 villas, half of which are perched over water. If Manfaru isn’t in your plans, look into other islands in Maldives. There are 300,000 inhabitants on the 185 islands, with the biggest sector of the economy being tourism. The islands feature many resorts, totaling over 92 as of 2007, many of which feature over-the-water bungalows for people to stay in.

#5 – Kaua’i, Hawaii

Kaua’i is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands and is 562 square miles in size. Thanks to its volcanic origins, this might be one of the most lush and breathtaking islands in the world. One of the must-see places on Earth sits on this island in the form of Waimea Canyon. At 3,000 feet deep, Waimea Canyon is often referred to as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and is sure to take your breath away. There are many small towns on the island, many of which cater to resorts that tourists stay in. If you love breathtaking canyon views, contrasted by gorgeous scenic ocean views, then Kaua’i is the place for you.

First Five Things to Do Once You’re Engaged

Congratulations! It’s official, you’re a catch. Now that you’ve got the ring, it’s time to get to work planning the best day of both of your lives. We know that this time is very exciting, but may also be challenging. We’re here to help.

1.       Decide who to tell privately

It may be incredibly tempting to immediately Instagram your new favorite piece of jewelry, but it’s best to take a moment to enjoy yourself. Calling close family and friends before posting any engagement announcements is a good idea. It will save some feelings from being hurt if they find out via a third party (you don’t want your mom to find out you’re engaged a week after it was tweeted). Plus, you get to relive the excitement of it all every time you call someone to spread the news. Both of you should agree on when to really let the cat out of the bag.

2.       Plan on Taking Pictures

You’re in the sweet spot where you’re no longer single and you’re not yet married- take lots of pictures! Talk to your fiancé about setting up a photo shoot to capture your engaged period. You can use these photos for your wedding invites, for your thank you notes, or even as engagement announcements. We’ve got you covered with some photo-taking tips here.

3.       Say Thank You

It may not be traditional, but it is good to give a little thanks to the person that you love (and we’re big fans of thank you notes!). They went out on a limb for you, it’s sweet to extend a gesture their way too. You don’t have to go buying a diamond too, but a nice dinner or something fun they’ve been eyeballing can be a great thank you.

4.       Set your Own Pace

It’s completely fine to just enjoy being engaged for a while. You don’t have to immediately set a date once that ring’s on. If you have some other events going on in your life you want to focus on, go for it! Don’t let anything or anyone pressure you into rushing things. If you want a strict time line, go for it but don’t let anyone push you into setting a date before you’re ready.

5.       Start Saving

Now is as good a time as any to start saving up. If you two don’t have any sort of nest egg or savings, you’ll need it. It may feel like a big step, but opening a joint savings account may be an easy way to save money and earn interest. Even after the wedding, it can be good for married couples to have some sort of savings together for a rainy day (or even a sunny day- hello vacation fund!).
