Stay at Home Honeymoon Ideas

For some couples, the idea of a real honeymoon isn’t something that falls within the realm of reality. A good friend of mine got married last year but because of a demanding work schedule plus two kids, a honeymoon just wasn’t in the cards. What did he and his new wife do instead? A very smart thing – a stay at home honeymoon in their home town. If you are in the same situation, don’t forgo the honeymoon experience, there’s always something you can do, even if it’s just for a night! Here’s are some good “Stay at Home Honeymoon” ideas that might help you plan something for a night or two after your wedding.

Swanky Hotel

No matter your hometown, chances are there’s a swanky four star hotel that you could visit for a night. It’ll feel like a vacation because it’ll be a place that you’d never normally visit and certainly never stay in because your home is so close. Some of these hotels even have amenities like an in-room hot tub or spa where you can really spoil yourself. Why not take a weekend package to stay in your home town, pay nothing in travel expenses and stay under $500 for a nice, memorable weekend?

Local Indian Casino/Resort

Out here in Southern California, we’re spoiled thanks to the numerous billion-dollar Indian Casino Resorts to choose from. These locations sport exciting casino action, four-star restaurants, amazing buffets and high quality hotel rooms. There’s always amenities like spas and gyms to make for an amazing experience. Most of these resorts offer a ton of different packages to choose from and it’s commonplace to have specials only available for locals, so don’t hesitate to call and find out what they might have for you!

A Nice Dinner / Home

One thing that you can do if you are on a tight budget and really can’t afford to spend even a night away from home is make a reservation at a nice restaurant and simply having a nice night out on the town. There’s no reason you can’t plan for something special back at home. Why not get your bedroom ready for a romantic night with roses, rose pedals, music and lights and have it waiting for you when you get home from a nice dinner? This may not even fall into the true spirit of a honeymoon, but it’s important for you and your spouse to have at least one special night together after the wedding.

Top Three Accessories for Brides

Do you want to enhance your bridal look and look fabulous on your wedding day? Do you want to go from dull to an exciting, fun, yet elegant bridal look? I think the most stand out brides have something added which really makes their whole bridal look just pop! Lets take a look at the top three accessories you can add:

  • Hair Accessories: Traditionally brides wear veils on their wedding day. Especially if they are getting married at a church. However, these days you can do something different and new. I really love the hair accessories that a lot of brides are doing these days. Something fun, delicate, or with a little sparkle, can really add some elegance to the whole bridal look. It can be a  headband, hair pin, embellished hair flowers, or tiara. When you go in for your hair trial, try one of these ideas!
  • Jewelry: They say diamonds are girls best friends, so why not add some bling to your wedding day? Now, it does not have to be diamonds, but some type of jewelry like gold, silver, or pearls can add a little something to your bridal gown. Depending on how you do your hair, or how your bridal gown looks like, you can add earrings, necklace, bracelet, or all three.  Whatever looks best. You have your engagement ring on your left hand, so you may like to add a ring to the right hand. Some brides will receive jewelry as a gift from their groom, parents, grandparents, or other family members which they can then wear for their wedding day.  So what a perfect day to put on some jewelry and  sparkle!
  • Purse:  I love purses as much as I love my shoes. Most girls do right?  It really brings the whole outfit come together. So why not show a purse off on your wedding day? It is not only a place where you can keep some essentials, like lipstick, Kleenex, or mirror, but it can also add style and chicness to your bridal look.  Bridal purses can complement your bridal gown and you can use them for your pre-wedding events, rehearsal dinner and wedding reception.

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: December 27th

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLCHere is a recap of the episode:

Who are the Brides?:

TLC's "Four Weddings" Bride.

TLC’s “Four Weddings” Bride.

  • Jenna is a laid back bride who gets married at her childhood church. The church featured tall ceilings, and a modern design. Bridesmaids wore blue dresses and the groomsmen wore blue shirts and black suspenders. Sunflowers tied to the pews brightened the room. This wedding continues at the whaling museum, where the cocktail hour and reception takes place.   A large boat in the middle of the cocktail hour “wows” guests as they walk in. Guests then enter the gallery rooms where large whales are displayed above the reception tables. Sunflowers decorated cupcakes instead of wedding cake were served to all the guests.  Guests dance the night away with Jenna at the center, as she really gets down and shows off her dance moves.
  • Celeste  is a backyard bride who shares her Mexican traditions with all her guests. Her love for family brings her wedding to her mother’s backyard.  Traditional Mexican papel picados (paper banners), handmade by the mother of the bride hung above. Guests enjoyed drinks in their personal mason jars prior to the ceremony. The ceremony space was very casual and simple, with a gazebo, and stacks of hay for guests to sit on. Keeping with the backyard theme, the guest tables all featured two potted plants for centerpieces, and plant wedding favors for each guest. At nightfall, each guest sent a wish lantern into the sky.
  • Cammi is a Harvard Ph.D student for biological sciences, and spends her days in the lab.  She adores her school and so has her wedding set at Harvard University. Harvard’s grand church with high vaulted ceilings, and stunning archways, sets the scene for the ceremony. An ensemble of musicians play music as guests arrive, and then for the grand entrance of the bride.  A very formal affair. The rest of the day is set at a historical inn.  A cocktail hour that features a bacon bar was definitely unique. To find their tables, guests picked up a lantern with a lighted candle inside, which also had their name and table number.  The reception space was formal with red, black, and white colors. There was not only one cake, but three cakes total. One was a four tiered cake with red ribbons wrapped around each tier and red roses. The other two were for the groom and bride. A violin shaped cake for the groom, and the letter “H” for Harvard for the bride.
  • Anjali, a princess bride and her Prince Charming share their wedding at a grand castle. She is a princess with a prince planner. Her prince planned all the details of their storybook wedding.  Guests walk through a red carpet draw bridge and enter the castle. The ceremony is inside a large dark hallway with lit candles, and medieval elements throughout. Very elegant. After the fairytale kiss, guests enjoy cocktail outside with sweeping views of the water. Caricature artists create personal portraits to enjoy and take home. The long hallway which was once the ceremony space was now the grand reception hall. Two long tables were set for guests to sit at. Wish lanterns were lit and sent off into the night sky.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Cammi’s wedding was that the centerpieces at each guest table was a bride cage and inside the lyrics and sheet music for their first dance. How cute is that? This was so unique and personal for the couple since the groom is a musician and they share love for music. I have never seen this at any weddings I have attended or planned. I really loved this idea! Celeste’s  dress and veil was beautiful! I thought that the style fit her perfectly. I really loved the long veil. Even though I normally have seen long veils at church weddings, the veil worked for Celeste. It seems effortless, like the veil was meant for that dress and Celeste. Anjali’s cake was phenomenal! It was four cakes all connected by grand staircases, and the middle cake had a water fountain under it! Truly amazing! I thought it was perfect for a princess bride and her fairytale wedding. What I thought was so cute and fun was Jenna’s  first dance with her husband. It started as a sweet slow dance and then the music picked up, and they danced to a choreographed fun dance. The dance was choreographed by Jenna herself, which I thought was super cute. How fun!

Who won? Congrats to Cammi for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to San Miguel, Mexico. I was not surprised about Cammi winning at all, she totally deserved it! Actually, as soon as I watched this wedding, without even seeing the rest, I knew Cammi would win! I loved everything about this wedding. While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, all the other details – venue, dress, and originality – were owned by Cammi’s wedding, easily exceeding the rest. I thought that every detail of her formal wedding was elegant and chic.  A wedding which I think you would agree would be one to attend and really enjoy. Wonderful job Cammi!  So how did the other three brides score? Amanda came super close (one point) at second, Celeste in third, and Anjali in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results?

Congrats to Cammi for winning!

Congrats to Cammi for winning!

Santa Barbara Wedding from Sara Jordan Photography

This intimate wedding is simply beautiful.  The type of wedding that can take sparkle bridal shoes and mix them with a beautiful lace gown for a look that is so effortless, you think that the pair was always meant for each other. Just like this couple who come together and share their love with close friends and family. The images are captured by  Sara Jordan Photography who showcases the sweetest moments of the day.

From Sara Jordan Photography:

Aimee and Robert wanted a small ceremony with close relatives only, in order to avoid the mess and fuss of a big traditional wedding. The couple loves Santa Barbara. Robert who is an architecture photographer felt that the Santa Barbara Court House would be the perfect backdrop for their small intimate ceremony.

The couple got ready at a cute bed and breakfast called The Treasure Cat. The cutest part of their getting ready was the gift exchange prior to the ceremony. The couple wanted to be traditional and not see each other before hand so the bride’s sister and I were arranging the logistics. They really wanted to make sure I capture each other’s faces while they were opening each other’s gifts. After opening the gifts the bride put on her stunning dress. Amy who is simply gorgeous looked absolutely stunning.

Their ceremony was amazing. They reserved the entire courtyard at the Santa Barbara Courthouse for several hours. Which means no one else was allowed to be in the area. After the ceremony we walked around the courthouse taking photos. The reception was lunch only at the Wine and Cast. The couple spent time reserving and planning everything. Prior to lunch they met with the chef and he prepared a special meal for them. The couple reserved the entire outdoor patio area. During the ceremony and reception they hired an acoustic guitarist to play the whole time.

One thing I love about smaller weddings is you really avoid the time pressures you have with traditional weddings. They are very unstructured and I have as much time as I need to get shots. They’re easier to plan and I find them to be just as special as the bigger weddings.

What I feel most lucky about, is the opportunity to work with TLC’s “Four Weddings” Television show. Each week a sneak peek and re-cap of the episode is shared. The show features four completely different brides who attend each other’s weddings with one wedding being deemed “the winner” at the end. The brides rate the food, dress, venue, originality, and overall experience of each wedding, except for their own. At the end, all the scores of each bride are tallied, and the one with the highest score wins an all expenses paid honeymoon. I always been a fan of the show, and to be able to feature it on Bridal Hot List is so amazing. Thank you TLC!

Plug Wedding Video Productions

Today is Christmas Eve and I got an early gift to share. I am super excited to feature videography for the first time on Bridal Hot List! I Your wedding day happens once in your life and all those special moments need to be captured. Right? I mean, don’t you want to watch that moment when your father cried when he saw you for the first time? Or when you and your groom share a heartfelt moment after you have said your vows to each other? How about the moment when you and your groom share your first dance as husband and wife? All these wonderful memories are priceless and not only good to be captured by photography, but videography as well. Videography tells a story, shares moments, and provides memories that are forever. I am in love with a videography company which is just phenomenal! This awesome videography company just won “Best New Idea or Concept” for the Association of Bridal Consultant-Orange County Trendsetter Award for 2012. The new concept was time lapsing venues for use in wedding videos. Their goal was to create visual eye-candy that people love watching. What I love about this company is how their videos tell a story in a beautiful and creative way.

Dan Douglas at Plug Wedding Video Productions tells us a bit about what they do for couples and their special day…

Plug’s approach is working closely with the bride and groom.  We love meeting with every couple to build their personalized wedding day story — from concept to final cut.  We include a special highlights reel on all of our packages, and we provide the time-lapse as “eye-candy” to include in their special re-cap.

We also offer same-day edits that are great ways for guests to experience and re-live the wedding day along with the bride and groom.  We offer fresh, new approaches to shooting all of our weddings and even provide our couples with links to share with their family and friends online.

Check out a glimpse into the eyes of some creative guys at Plug Wedding Video Productions!

A Few Great Engagement Photoshoot Locations in Southern California

If you happen to live in Southern California, there’s no shortage of wonderful places to take your engagement photographs. Typically, couples take advantage of the gorgeous beaches because of the plentiful space and options available. There’s no shortage of beaches in California, meaning there’s no shortage of great shooting locations either. However, that doesn’t mean beaches are the only place to get your engagement photographs done. Let’s take a look at a few locations, some beaches and some not, to give you some ideas if you plan to have your engagement photos done in Southern California.

Laguna Beach, CA

If you’ve never been to Laguna Beach, you’ll want to make it one of your destinations if you are visiting from out of town. It’s a tourist location to be sure but one that even locals in Orange County enjoy visiting thanks to the great beach, plentiful restaurants and overall small beach city charm Laguna Beach is known for. There are literally dozens of great spots to take photographs so if you’re looking for a very versatile beach location where you can go high (cliffs) and low (beach shore) then Laguna Beach might be the place you want to do your shoot. The good news too is that couples can travel to Laguna Beach in the early morning (think 6am) just after sunrise and find ample parking and empty beaches, not to mention some of the best time a photographer could hope for when it comes to lighting.

Union Station, Los Angeles

Union Station, Los Angeles

Union Station, Los Angeles

Union Station is a historical landmark that originally opened up in May of 1939. This rail station is often referred to as the last of the great railway stations to be built in the United States and was inducted into the National Register of Historic Places back in 1980. It’s a very popular spot to have photographs done because of the wonderful architectural design and retro motif. If couples take some time to research this spot, they’ll probably think how familiar the interior of Union Station looks. The reason for that is because dozens of movies have been filmed inside! So if the beach thing isn’t your scene, this is definitely a spot you’ll want to check out that is a historic landmark sure to make for a wonderful setting for engagement photos.

Disneyland

Hey, why not? If Disneyland is the happiest place on Earth and the future bride and groom are both huge Disney fans, Disneyland is absolutely made for a photoshoot. The popular theme park brings together more than a half-dozen different eras (including the future) and settings making it the most diverse photo-shoot setting you could possibly ask for, short of EPCOT park in Orlando, Florida. The staff love to accomodate photographers and there’s literally 20+ historic scenic spots to take photographs. Plus, where else on Earth could you take engagement photos with Mickey Mouse, Princess Aurora and Darth Vader on the same day?

La Jolla, CA

If you are heading to or living in San Diego, La Jolla is a city in the southwest corner of the county that is world reknown for its ritzy lifestyle and breathtaking beaches. There’s a ton of great eating spots (think the 4-star variety) and this is less small beach town and more rich beach resort. Nevertheless, there’s no denying that La Jolla Shores has some of the prettiest spots in Southern California to take pictures from, so if you’ll be heading to San Diego, this might be the spot for you.

Should You Write Your Own Wedding Vows?

The wedding vows are the most tender and real moments of the wedding ceremony. It’s the time when the ceremonial component of the wedding ends and the bride and groom speak with their own voice. It’s a time when each shares their own words with the other, as well as all those in attendance. There is always the question of whether or not to write your own vows. Should you write something on your own? Should you ‘wing it’ and just speak to whatever comes to mind? Or should you rely on one of the many great writers in history? Let’s explore!

Writing Something on Your Own

This is a great option if there are things that must be said that you absolutely do not want to forget. If there are memories, or promises, or people that you want to mention during the vow then you should definitely be ready to write up some notes at the very least. If you have terrible stage fright or know yourself well enough to understand that you’ll be petrified when the microphone gets passed to you, then you should absolutely think about writing your own vows. There’s a lot of merits in doing this as you’ll be able to make sure it sounds great, you’ll be able to practice it beforehand and you’ll be able to say exactly what you prepared. If you decide not to write out the whole thing, you can always write up the vows in note form and just make good bullet-points of the things you want to say. It might even boil down to writing keywords that remind you of the things that you want to be a part of your vow. There’s no shame in writing your own vow and bringing it on a paper to the wedding. It’s *your* wedding so do what you want and plenty of people go down this route because it’s the best way to make sure you give an eloquent, meaningful vow during your wedding.

Just Winging It

Personally, I’ve never been a fan of winging anything in life. However, the wedding vows on my day were made up on the spot. How did they come out? Wonderful! Clearly, you’ll have ideas in your head of all the things you want to say and will even practice out loud some of the important parts of what you want to say. There’s some merit to just putting your head and heart out there for everyone to see and simply sharing what’s in your heart at that big moment. If you are not afraid of crowds or speaking in public, this route can be highly recommended. You might surprise yourself at how well you do!

Great Writers

I’d recommend going this route if you simply are terrified of writing and speaking, meaning the first two options won’t work for you. A lot of people can communicate well, but simply not through the written form and being able to wing it on the spot is too terrifying a thought to try. This third option can also be just as good as the first two. Take this amazing piece from William Shakespeare:

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a stay: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven doth shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d; But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou owest: As long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this and this gives life to thee.”

Gorgeous, right? Finding the right sonnet or poem, or even religious verse, can be breathtaking and meaningful as a wedding vow. In the end, the choice is up to you, so consider all your options if you are about to get married and you’re considering to write your own wedding vows. Good luck!
