Three Tips to Make Your Wedding Earth Day Friendly

Happy Earth Day, everyone! Today is the day that we reflect on our planet and many of the environmental initiatives that make Earth a better place. While many of us have embraced the concept of “reduce, reuse, recycle” and are doing our part, there’s other events in our lives where we can improve our environmental impact, such as a wedding! Here are three great tips for making your big day a lot more environmentally friendly. Remember, it’s all about making a difference and all the little things definitely add up to big differences in the world.

Local Travel – Cut Down on Drive Times

Instead of forcing your guests to drive all around town, burning up gas and being extremely inefficient with the travel plans, try to have a centrally located place to have your ceremony and reception. If it’s all in the same place, then the travelling people have to do is minimized and there’s less environmental impact. An alternative to this would be to hire environmentally friendly shuttle services – there are many that run off of clean gas or even companies that have fleets of hybrid vehicles. In the city of Denver (it might be the whole state of Colorado), all the cabs are hybrids with the majority being the popular Prius cars that get amazing mileage and do minimal environmental impact for emissions and gas consumption.

Hiring the Right Florist

Just like many of us like to buy at growers direct markets or even at the local Sunday farmers market, there are florists that only buy from local growers or just grow their own flowers. Buying organically grown local flowers is the way to go, although this option might be a little hard for some people if there are no options around where you live. You can also be smart about the candles you buy, with the best being soy-based or beeswax-based ones. Buying locally made products that are organically made means less pesticides and no shipping (giant trucks driving everywhere).

Locally Grown Foods

The next step is to find a caterer that specializes in locally grown, organic ingredients. Many chefs and catering companies will scoff at the idea, but the fact is that many environmentally minded people (and towns) are headed in this direction. The days of over-stuffing your face with greasy foods at weddings is over. People have more sophisticated pallets and hiring a catering company that delivers organic food and maintains a good environmental standing is a big boost to the environmental cause.

Gorgeous Paper Goods from Gourmet Invitations

Today, it is hard to say Happy Friday. It is with a heavy heart that we watch the city of Boston go through such a emotional and heartbreaking time. Watching from the other side of the country, I can not imagine the anxiety and uneasiness that the Bostonians are going through right now. At BHL we continue to pray for those affected by this tragedy  and are keeping the city of Boston in our hearts.

With Boston in our thoughts, we want to continue the afternoon with something of joy and love. Taking a short break, to introduce a fabulous and creative company, Gourmet Invitations. When we first laid eyes on all the amazing paper goodies, we could not get over all the personal, and lovely details of each and every product. Gourmet Invitations came about when the owner and founder, Tifany Wunschl hand-made all the programs, place cards, and table numbers, for her own wedding. She loved it so much, she continued to do it for friends and family.  It then grew into something she never would have imagined. And, we are so grateful for that. Yep, this super creative and beautiful company can seriously deliver all the pretty goods. Let us take a look at the type of goods we are talking about.

Gourmet Invitations does more than just wedding invitations. Yep, they have the perfect recipe for all the hand-made paper goodness. Bridal shower and engagement party invitations, save-the-dates, seating charts, place cards, table numbers, menus, thank you cards, and more. Tifany works closely with all her clients in creating personal and beautiful paper goods for their taste, style, and look.  The end result? A beautiful work of art! What is great is that all the paper goods come together in a cohesive fashion, weaving all wedding elements into one. So, when the guest sees the invitation for the first time, it is their first sneak peek into what is to come on the wedding day. From the save-the-date, to the place card at their seat during the reception, your guests will be able to enjoy all the wonderful details of your wedding. So, take a break, get ready to inhale some happy and joyful fragrances of pure talent and beauty.

Wedding Webcast by A*Light Wedding

Wedding Wednesday is here again, and as I sit down to write the introduction to this feature, I do not know where to begin. Today’s feature is way too special. This special feature brings tears to my eyes as it is filled with emotion and love. What I truly love about what I do, is that I have the opportunity to learn new things everyday. Each time I learn something new about weddings, I am speechless. So, what is today’s inspiring lesson? It is all about capturing the intimate moment of the “I Do’s”, the love, and all the sweet elements of the big day. Live from your seat at home. Let me introduce A*LIGHT WEDDING and all the Hi-tech magic behind it all.

A*LIGHT WEDDING recognizes the need to bring together loved ones who can not be present at the wedding. All via the world wide web. What do you need? Just high speed Internet access. Pretty simple right?  I am delighted to share what A*LIGHT WEDDING offers for couples and their loved ones on their wedding day. They offer a live stream video of the bride and groom’s ceremony, a customized and personal channel, (which includes a photo viewing gallery, links to a gift registry, and virtual guest book), and access to the private channel for a year. So, why is this so darn amazing? Imagine your grandmother who has been waiting her whole life to be part of your special day, and cant not attend the day of the wedding. It would be hard for you and for her to miss such a special day. So, how about if she could? All straight from her home? Even though she can not physically sit and be there on the wedding day, she can watch it live and see all the beautiful moments. What is so wonderful is that she does not have to wait until the videographer releases the wedding video, however she can watch it on the live broadcast! This is very touching to me because I am so close to my own grandmother, and if she was not part of my day, it would have broken my heart. So, it makes me smile with joy that there is a way to include your close ones on one of the most important days of your lives.   A*LIGHT WEDDING really connects the personal and sweet moments of a couple’s love with all their loved ones with one simple channel.

Personal Stylist, Susie Grossman styled this beautiful bride with an angelic yellow, lace detailed Maggie London dress.  For a pop of color, coral colored Charles David “Icon” sandals were added.   We are in love with this adorable dress, and those shoes. Stunning!

This sweet and romantic dress is paired with Kate Spade bracelets. Swooning.

To top it all off with a pair of darling Kate Spade Earrings and a gorgeous headband by Tasha, is just perfect.

To complete the yellow laced romantic ensemble, beauty stylist Sarah Zaret creates a fun bridal shower makeup look. She chooses the gorgeous coral color as her inspiration. Coral crush is all the rage!  It exudes happiness and sunshine, and looks great on everyone.  To create the coral crush look, Sarah used Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick and cream blush for cheeks and eyes.  For lips she used the new Glossy Lip Stain from YSL, and for a bold brow look,  she used Anastasia.

Top Ten Tips on How to Shop for Your Bridal Gown by Sam Saboura

Today it is a very “special” day here in United States. It is Tax Day!  April 15th is not the most exciting date of the year, however we are not going to allow this day to bore us. We have a very special day of our own.  We may not have any tax day tips to provide to you, however we have some other fabulous wedding tips which we think you will love.  We had the pleasure of hearing Sam Saboura speak at a local wedding event and share amazing bridal trends. He also shared some pretty good shopping tips for wedding dresses. Sam Saboura is a top stylist and fashion expert, as well as a published author and television personality. He stars in TLC’s hit show, “Something Borrowed, Something New”. Sam really “wowed” us with his shopping tips, and raised a few eyebrows. We were so amazed by the tips that he shared, we had to feature it.  If you have not started looking for your wedding dress, then it is the perfect time to get ready for an awesome shopping experience.   Shopping for your wedding gown should be a fun, and memorable time. So why not make it better by learning a few pointers on how to shop for that perfect wedding gown! We hope your tax day is looking a little brighter for you already.

See what Sam shared with us on the top ten tips on how to shop for your bridal gown:

  • Bring Images and Inspiration: Have an idea in mind and some images of dresses you love but always be open to trying something outside of your vision.
  • Plan in Advance: You should start shopping for your dress one year out from your wedding date. 18 months is not unheard of since sometimes it takes up to 9 months to have a dress made. 9 months out is cutting is close unless you are looking to purchase a sample dress.
  • Research Before Purchasing: Get as much information about the dress you love that you can. Then go home and Google it. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you learn.
  • Bring Undergarments and Shoes: If you plan on wearing a certain type of undergarment on your wedding day, by all means bring them along on your shopping trips. You should also have an idea of shoe height and bring a similar shoe from your closet for dress appointments.
  • Always Try on a Dress That is Totally Not You: If a dress catches your eye for any reason try it on–even if this dress is not your style and even if it doesn’t fit your vision or venue. Sometimes you need to know what you don’t want to know exactly what you do. And sometimes the perfect dress will find you when you least expect it, so always be open.
  • Allow the Consultants to Help: Bridal consultants work with these dresses all day long and see them on dozens of different women and body types. The good ones know more about the dresses you’re trying than you do—I promise. Let them guide you and help you. You’ll be happy you did.
  • Always (try to) Stick to Your Budget: This is a classic conundrum and one I have lots of experience with so listen up! There are many beautiful gowns out there that will be out of your price range. And yes, they will all be gorgeous. You should know that they are expensive for a reason; the fit, quality, construction, styling and details may all surpass dresses in your price range. So here’s my advice: don’t go there. If you do, be prepared to fall in love and possibly be disappointed, or be prepared to pony up for the dress of your dreams!
  • There’s No Harm in Asking: You should always ask questions when shopping for your wedding dress. You may be able to obtain a discount, buy the sample of the dress you love or work out some kind of deal for alterations. I recently found a hidden sample rooms full of designer dresses with only slight damage that were a fraction of the price! You never know until you ask, so go for it!
  • When in Doubt… : When in doubt, sleep on it! This is the most important dress you will ever wear, so your decision should not be hasty or rushed. The old adage is actually true: when you know, you know.  So if you don’t—then walk away and get some perspective. The dress will still be there in the morning and your vision will be much clearer.
  • To Entourage or Not to Entourage, That is the Question: The right entourage can make or break your shopping trip so choose your helpers wisely and keep your group small. You’ll want friends and family members who have your best interest in mind and not their own. Listen to your entourage, but at the end of the day listen to yourself. It’s your wedding and your dress, so ultimately you should make the call.

Thank you Sam for these amazing shopping tips!

Five Tips on How to Reuse an Old Wedding Gown by Kelly Nishimoto

What ranks tops in my book is a meaningful moment in life. One of these amazing moments is the day that you marry your best friend and get to share that love with your closest friends and family. The elements of your wedding day become memorable and sentimental pieces which you want to cherish forever. The bridal gown, that perfect gown which most brides search until the moment where they shed a tear, or smile so big their cheeks hurt, is a significant detail of the big day. It is the dress that some brides dream about since the time they were a little girl. The wedding gown is such an important element of the bride’s wedding day because it is the dress they get married in. That perfect dress is enjoyed for one magical day of love, until the time where the beautiful day comes to an end, and the dress goes back on the hanger.  Ladies, as much as we may want to keep on wearing that gown until the very last possible second, the reality is we can not. I know, I was sad too when I was told I can not wear my dress the next day to brunch. The thing is that brides want to keep on wearing their gown because of how it made them feel and what it symbolizes. I mean, it is the dress which you wore to one of the most important events in your life. That is a pretty amazing moment.  So, of course brides want to live in that dress forever if they could. Typically the bride will box up her wedding gown (after it is professionally preserved of course), and store away. I know, we can not even take a peak once in awhile at our bridal gown, or even put it on again.

What if I told you that you can see your dress again? Yes, you can grab the box which has your wedding gown in it, open it up, and reuse it for something in your life for today. Oh, I can not wait to tell you what to do next! Recently, I had the pleasure to hear the amazing and talented Kelly Nishimoto speak about bridal trends and bridal gowns.  Kelly is a fashion designer who stars in the hit TLC show, “Something Borrowed, Something New”. On the show, Kelly transforms a special, previously worn gown into a gown which is for the time, venue, and personality of the bride. What I was most impressed with, was when she shared how an old wedding gown can be transformed into something new. Not just a brand new bridal gown, but into other fabulous things that can be as meaningful as the bridal gown itself.

Kelly shares five tips on how to reuse an old wedding gown:

  •   Make beautiful pillows…either for the ring bearer or as gifts for family members who may have a connection with the old dress.

Ring bearer pillow

  • Turn your mother’s or grandmother’s old vintage gown into a beautiful fabric bouquet for you to carry at your own wedding.

image008

  • Use past family gowns to make bedding for your first born.

image010

  • Use a family heirloom gown to make teddy bears for family members. The pearl buttons can be used as the eyes! You can also have a mini replica of your own gown made to fit a teddy bear.

image011

  • Get creative! Turn your old wedding gown into a party dress for you to wear for your anniversary or to future weddings that you attend! Dye it, reshape it, & make it new yet slightly familiar!

Thank you Kelly for your amazing ideas!

Wedding Memories Captured in Glass Art

The weekend is here, and it is time to relax and enjoy the California sun, making it for a pretty happy time. It’s hard to believe it can get better than this…but it just did! As you know, we are always searching for fabulous new trends in weddings. We found a seriously gorgeous and unique trend which we can not wait to share. One of our favorite moments of a couple’s wedding day is the special time where they become Mr. and Mrs. The ceremony is the most important part of a wedding day because this is the time where you are actually married. This moment is so special and personal to the bride and groom, that they would love to cherish the memory forever. We have the privilege to introduce Unity in Glass, highly-skilled artisans who create lasting memories for brides and grooms.Wait until you see what this is all about. Go ahead, grab your morning coffee, take a seat, and get ready to be amazed.

Unity in Glass is a personal upgrade from your typical sand, or candle unity ceremony. This is the next step in creating an art piece from your wedding day, and making the moment last forever. Unity in Glass creates hand-crafted glass sculptures which are made with the very same glass crystals from your unity ceremony. So, instead of keeping the sand in a bottle from a sand ceremony, the glass which is mixed ceremoniously, is transformed into a beautiful and meaningful glass sculpture.

At the ceremony, the bride, groom, together with their extended family members perform the unity ceremony with the colored glass crystals, blending the combination of their color choices, symbolizing the coming together.  Following the wedding, the couple returns the colored glass to Unity in Glass, and then the artisans will create a unique and personal sculpture that captures the love of the intimate moment.  An art piece which will  last a lifetime.  Once complete, the beautiful and stunning glass sculpture is sent back to the newlyweds for them to enjoy. A piece of art that is symbolic of an important and special time in their lives can now be enjoyed for years to come. What a lovely way to preserve such a significant moment.

We are amazed on how such an intimate and lovely moment can be preserved in such a beautiful way.

Sneak Peek of TLC’s “Something Borrowed, Something New” Episode: Season One Finale

Do you know what I love? Weekends! What a better way to start the weekend then with a sneak peek for tonight’s episode of TLC’s, “Something Borrowed, Something New”.  Tonight is the season one finale, so you must watch!  If you have missed any episodes, you are in luck, because you will be able to catch up on the re-runs.  Why should you watch this show if you haven’t already?  This show follows a bride’s journey to find the perfect wedding dress for her big day. However there is a twist! The bride will have to choose a new designer bridal gown, or a fashionably redesigned family heirloom. Who will help the bride find something new and something borrowed for her special day? Each episode is hosted by designer Kelly Nishimoto and stylist Sam Saboura, who will work with the bride to help choose between two dress options. Kelly will turn a special, previously worn gown into a gown which is for the time, venue, and personality of the bride. The bride will also have a chance to work with Sam in shopping at a bridal salon to find a brand new stylish dress. What happens next? The bride will have to make a very important decision and choose between a one-of-a kind dress and a newly fashionable piece. Will the bride choose her mother’s or grandmother’s wedding gown, or find something new and unique to her? Which one will the bride choose? How will she make her decision? It is a tough one!

DSCF4421Tonight’s episode features a bride who is looking for a classy, simple, and elegant dress for her rustic wedding. She has a super close relationship with her mother, so her mother really wants her to wear the dress she wore on her wedding day. It would be so special if she did. However, the bride is not a big fan of the 1980s dress. Puffy sleeves and all.

The bride is looking for a more up to date dress to compliment her upcoming wedding.  Kelly will use her stylish expertise  to transform this 1980s dress into a fabulous and fashionable gown fit for the 21st century.  Will Sam find a modren dress which will make this bride feel and look beautiful and gorgeous on her wedding day?  Which gown will the bride choose to wear on her big day? Will she walk down the aisle in the dress her mother once wore?  Or will she fall in love with something new and personal to her? Tune in tonight to find out.

TLC’s Something Borrowed, Something New airs Friday at 10/9c. So set your DVR’s, or watch it live tonight! It is the finale, so make sure you don’t miss it!
