Top 5 First Dance Songs at a Wedding

Picking the song to be played at the first dance at your wedding is a tough decision, because this will be the song that couples will forever remember as the one they first danced to as husband and wife. We wanted to find out what the top five “First Dance” songs are in terms of popularity, so we asked Robert Arthur, President of Invisible Touch Events. If you are not familiar with this company, they offer DJ, lighting and photo booths at weddings in Southern California.

According to Invisible Touch Events, these are the top five First Dance songs played at weddings. Let’s review the list in no particular order and dive into the song and what makes it so popular.

“I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz

This song comes from Mraz’s fourth album, “Love is a Four Letter Word” that came out a little over a year ago back in 2012. The acoustic love ballad has its roots stemmed in Mraz’s activist outings and the lyrics clearly point to the value of never giving up, especially on someone you love deeply. The song goes further to explain that one shouldn’t give up on loving themselves either, nor abandoning your dreams. It’s a very straightforward, catchy song that runs for about four minutes in length, the perfect amount of time for a first dance song.

“At Last” by Etta James

This song might be the single most popular first dance song and remains a classic, dating back all the way to when it was covered by James in 1960. This soul-filled blues song has been used in weddings, television shows, movies, home videos and dozens of other mediums thanks to a slow, almost hypnotic vocal triumph given by the immortal James. If you want to go with a safe classic, “At Last” is pure gold and will remain the standard by which most other first dance songs are judged by.

“Then” by Brad Paisley

Paisley wrote and recorded “Then” which is one of the top country songs over the last five years. This mild-tempo love ballad features a string section and piano, atypical to most of Paisley’s songs which are renown for his impressive guitar play. The song focuses on a male’s perspective, who is deeply in love for his female lover. During the song he retells significant and sentimental moments of their relationship. The chorus echos their love and says how much stronger his love is for her since the first time they met. This is a great song for country music lovers to choose for their first dance.

“God Gave me You” by Black Shelton

The song was originally written by contemporary Christian music singer Dave Barnes and covered by country music star Blake Shelton in 2011. The original artist has said on record that many fans who understand the song’s meaning say the song has helped them get through rocky times in their relationship. The song made #1 on the US Country Songs Billboard in 2011 and has quickly become a song that Christian newlyweds who enjoy country music choose for their first dance.

“Marry Me” by Train

Released in 2010, “Marry Me” was written by Pat Monahan of the band Train, who stated in several interviews that the song was supposed to be a short one, but was convinced to elongate and evolve the song based on the sweet, simple melody heard at the beginning. Popular in Adult Contemporary circles, the song is sweet, simple and perfect for a first dance, especially if the new wedded couple wants it on the short side, with the song length at just 3 minutes and 25 seconds.

TLC’s Four Weddings Winning Bride: January 18th

Who was the winning bride for Friday’s TLC’s “Four Weddings” show? The winner was Zoranda! Her family affair wedding scored a total of 87 points out of 120 points.  Here is the breakdown.

  • Venue: 22 points
  • Dress: 15 points
  • Experience: 20 points
  • Food: 30 points

Congrats to Zoranda for winning an all expenses paid honeymoon. Now that the wedding is over, and a honeymoon set to go, Zoranda and her groom can pack up their bags and enjoy the beaches of Los Cabos, Mexico. What a great way to celebrate before their new baby arrives.

Here is a look back at Zoranda’ s wedding:

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: January 18th

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLC?  What are your thoughts of the four brides and their weddings? What details stood out for you? Here is a recap of the episode:

Who are the Brides?:

  • Zoranda, a princess bride who loves family. The wedding starts at a beautiful church with it’s high cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, and long center aisle. The traditional Catholic ceremony starts with her grandmother walking her down the aisle and her daughter as the flower girl. After enjoying a large spread of food at the cocktail hour,  guests enter the ballroom for the reception. The reception features a large white dance floor, purple up lighting, and tall centerpieces with purple, white, and pink flowers. After dancing the night away, guests enjoy a firework show.
  • Anumita a bride who is in love with New York City has her wedding city set in, of course, New York City.  The ceremony features a gorgeous hoopa, candle lit tall vases along the aisle, and chandeliers hanging above.  Anumita’s dress featured a long beautiful veil which flowed nice down the aisle. The couple had a Jewish ceremony. To find their seat at the reception, guests would pick up a New York Metro card. Tall chandelier style vases with full flowers were found on each guest table as the centerpieces. The whole room was large with chandeliers hanging tall, some purple up lighting, and candles. The dance floor was full of energy among all the guests.
  • Karen a bride who has a destination wedding set outside Long Island, NY. Guests arrive to the wedding on a short boat ride over to the Fire Island. Dockside, the ceremony featured a white alter, flowers, guests from the community, and Karen’s two son’s who walked her down the aisle. Since the wedding was in October, and weather is cold, all guests were offered a blanket to keep warm during the ceremony. Inside a covered veranda, the reception took place. Simple decor consisting of small vases of flowers, candles, and twinkle lights. A buffet full of various stations were enjoyed by guests. The dance continued with a live country band and some line dancing.
  • Marie loves Halloween and Gothic details. As guests walk into the cathedral, they are greeted by performers on stilts, and then find their seat. A very dark space was lit with candelabras all around.  At the front of the ceremony, there were performers in ballerina outfits, moving around. Personal vows were shared between the couple.  Cocktail hour featured a tarot card reader, and some unique decor. The ceremony space is transformed into a beautiful reception room with red up lighting, long tables of black linens, lit candelabras, red flowers, and skulls. The cake was very nontraditional. It was a black three tier cake with red roses cascading down the side, and words of ” Till Death Do Us Part” on the front.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Zoranda’s reception was the big news that was shared with all their guests. They announced that they were pregnant. I thought it a really sweet way to share such news with your closest friends and family. A total family affair.   Being a big fan of dancing, I really enjoyed Anumita’s  Bollywood Indian dance with her bridesmaids, and then later with her groom. I think it so much fun when a bride shares something traditional and fun with all her guests. It is not only entertaining, yet, special at the same time. What a great way to get the party started.   What I thought was stylish at Karen’s wedding was the hanging branches above and chandeliers hanging off of them. I had never seen this decor, and thought it was pretty unique and lovely. Marie’s wedding had a lot of great details at her Gothic/Halloween/ Dark wedding theme. However, I really liked the guest table decor. The large gold candelabra with lush red roses, gold chargers, and skull napkin holders were really nice. It complimented the theme perfectly.

Who won? Congrats to Zoranda for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to Cabos, Mexico. I was not surprised  at all about Zoranda winning. While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, I did like the originality, venue, and the dress at Zoranda’s wedding. The family affair theme really showed at her wedding. Her daughter as a flower girl, her grandmother walking her down, the pregnancy news, and small touches of family inspired decor all complimented her theme. Way to go Zoranda!  So how did the other three brides score? Karen came in second, Anumita in third, and Marie in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results? What did you think about Marie’s reaction?

What Famous William Photography  shares…

They had two parts to their engagement session, part one being in Downtown Marietta, Georgia, and the other part at the Georgia Aquarium. A cool fact about that is that the Georgia Aquarium is actually the largest aquarium in the United States :) They have more than 8.5 million gallons of water and 120,000 different animals. Most people ask how you could possibly have an engagement session in such a busy and filled place, but the people there were really respectful of, and even interested in the shoot. Some people even stopped and watched this beautiful couple. It was really peaceful.

Top Three Wedding Ideas

Everyday is a wedding day here on BHL, and we can not get enough of it. Today, we get to reveal the top three wedding ideas for your inspired eyes to view. Yes, we are pretty darn excited.

  • The Groom’s Cake: We all know that most brides think of their wedding day, as their day, and all about them. Right? The groom just shows up and says his ” I do”, and enjoys the party. Right? Well, it may be sometimes be true, however it is great when there is a touch of the groom in the wedding, and that really the day is about a couple who love each other, and want to the world to know about it. What we love about this wedding, was that they incorporated something special for the groom. It is not just a ordinary cake which says “Groom” on it. No, there was for sure some real thought for this one. Being a huge baseball fan, and more than that, a Boston Red Sox fan, the groom’s cake is perfect for the groom. Isn’t just super cool? What was the groom’s reaction? Pure happiness and awe.

  • Dove Release:  Whether it is bubbles, butterflies, rose petals, rice, or confetti splashed up into the sky after you are married, it is a symbol of happiness, joy, excitement, and love which is shared with all your guests. We are in love with this wedding as it was not just any ordinary dove release.  No. This is much better. After the couple gets married, they each got to hold a dove, and as they kiss, they released the dove up into the sky. Simply magical.

  • Ring Bearer:  We adore ring bearers and flower girls. We love how sweet it is for a little niece  nephew, cousin, or own child to walk down the aisle and be part of such a special day. However, this wedding had the cutest ones we have ever seen.  We love the idea of the ring bearer with a sign wore over his neck, and a perfect adorable flower girl at his side. All cameras were out for these two, and smiles from cheek to cheek from not only the parents, but all the guests as well. Just so darn cute!

Meet Mallory and Kris.  Mallory choose this location (downtown LA) because her mother worked there as a child and she had fond memories of visiting her there.  We met at the Bradbury Building, this is where the shoot should’ve taken place in it’s entirety.  Turns out they no longer allow photography there and they were also filming a movie.  I begged the guard to take a few shots because we’d driven so far to take photos there.  He agreed :) But we literally had ten minutes and could only use the stairs.  Mallory and Kris were really good about it, but we were forced to go to plan B.  We walked around downtown and photographed them on the way.  On the streets of LA another security guard came up to us and said we couldn’t photograph there…apparently all the security guards were doing their jobs to the fullest that day :)

So on to plan C, we headed over to the Walt Disney Concert Hall to finish up as the sun was setting.  Mallory and Kris didn’t let the day’s challenges affect them at all.  We all embraced the idea of being all around the city.  They’re truly a sweet and loving couple that know how to make the best of any situation and have fun.

Renting a Tuxedo from Friar Tux Shop

Recently I attended a swanky New Year’s party at the St. Regis resort here in Orange County, California. The dress code for the event was formal, with the twist being a James Bond theme. Clearly, only one form of dress would do and that would be a tuxedo. The only problem for me was that I don’t own a tux, which meant that I was in need of a rental. Enter one of Los Angeles and Orange County’s highest rated tuxedo rental locations, the Friar Tux Shop.

Friar Tux Shop has been around since 1974, almost 40 years, getting their start in the Greater Los Angeles area. In their mission statement, they note that they are family owned and operated since Day One and pride themselves on providing top men’s fashion at affordable prices. Whether you are in need of a tux for a wedding, party, prom or other event, Friar Tux Shop states that they are ready and excited to be a part of your big day.

Having rented from Friar Tux Shop for my wedding seven years ago, I decided to remain loyal and headed over to one of their locations once again. Fortunately they were having a New Year’s sale which meant that their regularly reasonable prices were downright cheap. As soon as I entered their store I was made to feel like a V.I.P. with the staff on hand asking all the questions necessary to make proper suggestions for my attire. The entire selection process didn’t take long at all and I was able to get fitted and sized in a matter of minutes.

Picking up the tuxedo was easy, as I just dropped by and everything was waiting for me. Shoes, pants, shirt, vest, bow tie, and jacket were neatly packed in a protective outer jacket to ensure they stated cleaned and organized for the ride home. All the clothes were extremely clean, fit perfect and most importantly, made me look extremely sharp. I got to the party feeling like a million bucks, and more important, fit in wonderfully with the James Bond theme. My wife was thrilled that I was decked out so nicely and wearing the tux made for some very memorable photos that we’ll cherish for many years.

Returning the tux was, as the entire process had indicated it would be, a total breeze. I simply put all the garments back and took them to the store. After a quick check from the staff, who greeted me once more with a smile, I was done!

If you live in the Southern California area and looking to rent a tuxedo yourself, definitely give Friar Tux Shop a call. My experience with their staff was very pleasing and most importantly, I was able to rent a very sharp tuxedo at an extremely reasonable price.

A Groom’s Go To Kit

Last week, we shared what a bride’s emergency kit looks like to prepare her for any mishaps on her big day. The bride is not the only one who needs to be prepared, her groom needs to be ready as well. What does the groom’s kit consist of? Probably will not find lipstick, or nail polish, however there are some essential items which every groom needs on his wedding day.

  • Deodorant
  • Black socks
  • Mints
  • Hair Spray
  • Cologne
  • Talcum powder
  • Mouth wash
  • Q-tips
  • Brush/comb
  • Band Aids (various sizes)
  • Antacid
  • Chap-stick
  • Pain reliever (something non-drowsy of course!)
  • Stain remover
  • Hand lotion
  • Lint brush
  • Eye Drops (Visine)
  • Scissors
  • Tooth Brush and Toothpaste
  • Shoe polish
  • Hair Brush/Comb

Together with your groom, go shopping at any travel section of a major store, and make your emergency kits. Yes, it is one more item to add to your wedding “to do” list, however it is well worth it! Make it a perfect day by being prepared.
