Top Five Questions to Ask the Reception Venue

You have found the perfect groom, the perfect dress, and now you are ready to find that perfect venue for your big day. The venue is one of the most important elements of your wedding day. It sets the tone and mood for all other elements to come together. Finding the venue where the style and design meets your needs in every aspect of your wedding ideas is key.  You want to make sure that you are in love with the venue because that is where you will be spending most of the day. So when you are sitting with your newly husband at your sweetheart table, looking out, you will smile and be happy.  You want you and your guests to have have unforgettable memories!

Before booking your perfect venue, there are some questions that you want to consider in asking. We are going to look at the top five questions:

  • Size matters: How many guests can the reception accommodate? If you have a 175 guest count, and the ballroom’s capacity is maxed at 150, this space will not work for your guest count. Also, you want to see if the the dance floor is the appropriate size for the number of guests you will have. A tight dance floor is not so fun, and your guests may not want to be arm to arm with someone who may be a bit sweaty!
  • Suitable for a Wedding: Is the venue suitable for a wedding event? Or does the venue mainly hold meetings as events? You want to make sure that the venue has experience with an event like a wedding which requires many elements.
  • Decor elements What type of decor elements does the venue provide? This is good to know, so that way if needed will need to look for an outside vendor to meet those needs. For example, do they provide chairs, tables, or linens. If so, what colors or styles do they provide?
  • Lights and Camera: A wedding event is like putting together a production and may require some lighting and Audio/Visual elements. A question to ask the venue is up-lighting of various colors available? For the ballroom or reception space, can the lights be dimmed for the special dances? How about the lighting on the food and dessert tables? For any audio/visual: Are there enough outlets for the A/V requirements? Does the venue include a microphone? How about a projector? If you want to show a slide-show, will need to find out if the venue can provide a projector. If not, will need to have an outside vendor bring it in for you.
  • The Facilities: If you are at a venue where they allow for outside catering, you will need to find out if they will provide a kitchen with refrigeration and heating appliances. Dishes and cutlery? If not, then will need to ask if there is a space where the caterer will bring their own kitchen with all required equipment and supplies. Food is one of the most important parts of the reception. If the food is not good, your guests will be hungry and unhappy.

Remember this is your wedding day, and you want it to be one of the most memorable days of your life. So take the time to ask questions! Good luck!

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: January 25th

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLC?  What are your thoughts of the four brides and their weddings? What details stood out for you? Here is a recap of the episode:

Who are the Brides?:

  • Kale, a bride who is non-traditional and wants to dance the night away at her wedding. Being non traditional, the wedding takes place at a Design Center in San Francisco, California. The ceremony featured some elegant decor of beautiful trees, candles, and white orchids. Prior to the Kale walking down the aisle, there was a dance piece performed by a dancer.  Personal vows were shared with each other and also with Kale’s daughter. Variety of food buffet style, simple tree flower centerpieces, and a personal dance from the bride, all featured at Kale’s reception. Four costume changes took place with Kale: ceremony, dance performance, dance cocktail dress, and a dress for cutting cake and end of evening.
  • Jennifer cruises with her groom and all her guests around San Francisco Bay on her wedding day. Prior to ceremony, champagne was handed to each guest. On the top deck of the yacht, the ceremony took place with silver and purple colors, and a ivy covered arch. Down at the lower deck of the boat, the reception took place with decor of white linens, glass vases with orchids floating inside, candles, and purple sashes on chairs.
  • Christa a bride who has waited 12 years to say ” I do”, gets married on a golf course.  The ceremony was set with white tulle and black bows down the aisle, a white rose decorated alter, all with a backdrop of the golf course. After a short ceremony, guests go inside for the reception. The colors of Christa’s wedding were black and white with some bling. The centerpieces were glass vases with white flowers, and rhinestones. The tables had white linens, black sashes on the chairs, and wedding favors packaged in small black boxes.
  • Araceli a bride who features some of her Mexican heritage at her wedding. Set in a beautiful garden setting, the ceremony featured a gazebo with hanging jewels, white roses flowers, and tall green trees. Once they both were under the gazebo, in their ceremony, they had a wedding laso put around them which was part of the Mexican ceremony tradition. The cocktail hour had passed appetizers, food stations, and the Mariachi band playing in the background. The reception was also set outside on the green lawn with the lovely trees around. Her something blue colors was evident in her decor. The guest tables had  silver rhinestone chargers, and white vase with white, blue, and purple flowers. There was also blue lighting on the trees. The dance floor had line dancing, and full of energy and fun.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Kale’s reception was the ice cream bar. I know I did not taste the ice cream, however it looked so good and you can not go wrong with ice cream. I think besides the wedding cake, it gives guests something fun and good to have for dessert. Who does not like ice cream?    I liked the personal touch that  Jennifer  had for her wedding favors. Jennifer and her family made ring shaped cookies for all their guests. I also liked that the bride herself handed them out to each guest as they walked off the boat. What a great personal touch! What I thought was really sweet at Christa’s wedding was the Southern Rock music tribute to her dad who had passed away a few years ago. I thought it was a great way to bring energy and love to such a special day in Christa’s life.  At Araceli’s wedding, she wanted to incorporate her Mexican heritage, and so at the processional, a Mariachi Band played music. As Araceli and her groom walked the aisle, and then guests then followed, the Mariachi band played. I thought this was very unique and a great way to incorporate the Mexican culture.

Who won? Congrats to Kale for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to Caribbean islands. I was not surprised  at all about the results.  While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, I did like the originality, venue, and the dress at Kale’s wedding. Her non-traditional style wedding really showed with four costume changes, a design center as the wedding location,  and her personal dance that she performed. Way to put on a great wedding, Kale!  So how did the other three brides score? Christa came in second, Araceli in third, and Jennifer in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results?

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: January 18th

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLC?  What are your thoughts of the four brides and their weddings? What details stood out for you? Here is a recap of the episode:

Who are the Brides?:

  • Zoranda, a princess bride who loves family. The wedding starts at a beautiful church with it’s high cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, and long center aisle. The traditional Catholic ceremony starts with her grandmother walking her down the aisle and her daughter as the flower girl. After enjoying a large spread of food at the cocktail hour,  guests enter the ballroom for the reception. The reception features a large white dance floor, purple up lighting, and tall centerpieces with purple, white, and pink flowers. After dancing the night away, guests enjoy a firework show.
  • Anumita a bride who is in love with New York City has her wedding city set in, of course, New York City.  The ceremony features a gorgeous hoopa, candle lit tall vases along the aisle, and chandeliers hanging above.  Anumita’s dress featured a long beautiful veil which flowed nice down the aisle. The couple had a Jewish ceremony. To find their seat at the reception, guests would pick up a New York Metro card. Tall chandelier style vases with full flowers were found on each guest table as the centerpieces. The whole room was large with chandeliers hanging tall, some purple up lighting, and candles. The dance floor was full of energy among all the guests.
  • Karen a bride who has a destination wedding set outside Long Island, NY. Guests arrive to the wedding on a short boat ride over to the Fire Island. Dockside, the ceremony featured a white alter, flowers, guests from the community, and Karen’s two son’s who walked her down the aisle. Since the wedding was in October, and weather is cold, all guests were offered a blanket to keep warm during the ceremony. Inside a covered veranda, the reception took place. Simple decor consisting of small vases of flowers, candles, and twinkle lights. A buffet full of various stations were enjoyed by guests. The dance continued with a live country band and some line dancing.
  • Marie loves Halloween and Gothic details. As guests walk into the cathedral, they are greeted by performers on stilts, and then find their seat. A very dark space was lit with candelabras all around.  At the front of the ceremony, there were performers in ballerina outfits, moving around. Personal vows were shared between the couple.  Cocktail hour featured a tarot card reader, and some unique decor. The ceremony space is transformed into a beautiful reception room with red up lighting, long tables of black linens, lit candelabras, red flowers, and skulls. The cake was very nontraditional. It was a black three tier cake with red roses cascading down the side, and words of ” Till Death Do Us Part” on the front.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Zoranda’s reception was the big news that was shared with all their guests. They announced that they were pregnant. I thought it a really sweet way to share such news with your closest friends and family. A total family affair.   Being a big fan of dancing, I really enjoyed Anumita’s  Bollywood Indian dance with her bridesmaids, and then later with her groom. I think it so much fun when a bride shares something traditional and fun with all her guests. It is not only entertaining, yet, special at the same time. What a great way to get the party started.   What I thought was stylish at Karen’s wedding was the hanging branches above and chandeliers hanging off of them. I had never seen this decor, and thought it was pretty unique and lovely. Marie’s wedding had a lot of great details at her Gothic/Halloween/ Dark wedding theme. However, I really liked the guest table decor. The large gold candelabra with lush red roses, gold chargers, and skull napkin holders were really nice. It complimented the theme perfectly.

Who won? Congrats to Zoranda for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to Cabos, Mexico. I was not surprised  at all about Zoranda winning. While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, I did like the originality, venue, and the dress at Zoranda’s wedding. The family affair theme really showed at her wedding. Her daughter as a flower girl, her grandmother walking her down, the pregnancy news, and small touches of family inspired decor all complimented her theme. Way to go Zoranda!  So how did the other three brides score? Karen came in second, Anumita in third, and Marie in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results? What did you think about Marie’s reaction?

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: January 10th

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLCHere is a recap of the episode:

Amber, a bride from this week's TLC episode of "Four Weddings"

Amber, a bride from this week’s TLC episode of “Four Weddings”

Who are the Brides?:

  • Amber a bride together with her groom share their wedding day with their two daughters in a Hawaiian style. Outside, the ceremony took place with hanging tropical flowers along the aisle, orchids hanging on the alter, all surrounded by a serene environment. While the groomsmen played ukulele, the bride was escorted in with her two brothers. Guests enjoyed a traditional Polynesian dance during cocktail hour, giving that Hawaiian feel. Inside the reception, the guest tables had simple decor of orchids submerged in water with candles. Keeping with the Hawaiian theme, the buffet offered a spread of Hawaiian style food. Amber and her groom depart their wedding as sparklers guide their way by their guests.
  • Whitney a high energy bride who loves to dance. The wedding ceremony took place in a romantic garden, “Shakespeare’s garden” in San Francisco. San Francisco can get cold, and this day was cold, so each guest was offered a small blanket to wrap themselves in as they sat in the ceremony. Surrounded by greenery, trees, and some flowers, the couple said ” I do”. Following the ceremony, guests went San Francisco style, and rode on a trolley to get to the reception. The guest tables were decorated with white and pink flowers, candles, and custom made frames. After a Southern style food buffet, guests danced the night away.
  • Christine a bride who is eco friendly and Victorian all at the same time. Guests dress with Victorian inspired hats as they enter the wedding which takes place at the local zoo. The African Savanna plays as the backdrop for the ceremony with Zebras, Antelopes, and birds. Something unique was the story of the rings they exchanged with each other. The rings were the groom’s grandparent’s rings, and they were melted down, and then new rings were formed. The couple made a day of it, and created the new rings. After a ride on the carousel, guests enter the reception space which features different color butterflies on each guest table, a tiger print design inside the piece of cake, a dress change for Christine, and a dance floor full of guests.
  • Shelly  blends her Afghan traditions with Western traditions at her elegant style wedding.  Set on a beautiful golf course, the ceremony features glass jars full of purple and white flowers, white rose petals down the aisle, and a personal friend as the officiant. The reception space had many damask details from the escort cards, table numbers, linens, to the cake. Colors of purple were shown in the room. Traditional Afghan music was played as guests danced the night away.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Amber’s the unity sand ceremony which was performed with their two daughters. It was not the typical sand ceremony, where you combine two colors of sand into one vase. However, they had a family photo in a frame, and each family member poured a different color of sand into the frame. I thought that was really sweet. I loved it!  OK, so I really loved Whitney’s recessional once they were married. Starting with the bride and groom, and then each bridesmaid and their groomsmen, they danced their way back up the aisle and exited. It totally set the mood for the rest of the wedding. What a fun way to exit!  What I thought was pretty cool at Christine’s  wedding is that guests had a chance to feed giraffes! How neat is that? I think it is something totally unique and very memorable for the couple and their guests.  What I thought was so great at Shelly’s wedding was when her mom applied the henna to guests. This was such a wonderful way to share the culture and tradition with the guests. Really nice gesture.

Who won? Congrats to Whitney for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to St. Lucia.  I was not surprised  at all about Whitney winning it all.  While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, I did like the originality, venue, and the dress for Wendy’s wedding. I really loved all the details of her wedding. From the sweet ambience of the garden ceremony  the personal blankets, the trolley ride to the reception, to the party vibe feel.  I totally wanted to be a guest at this wedding and enjoy all the wonderful elements. Great job Whitney!  So how did the other three brides score? Amber came in second, Shelly in third, and Christine in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results?

Congrats to Whitney for winning!

TLC’s Four Weddings Episode Recap: January 3rd

Did you watch last night’s episode of “Four Weddings” on TLCHere is a recap of the episode:

Who are the Brides?:

  • Jessica, a backyard glamour bride who has her wedding set outside. The ceremony was surrounded with tall trees, and lush green lawns. Featured are white chairs with black bows on the back, white alter piece, and beautiful red rose bridal bouquet. A ring exchange? No, not at Jessica’s wedding. Instead of exchanging rings, the couple each had tattoos done on their inner wrists, and revealed them at the ceremony. Under a grand white tent, the reception space was set. It featured black laced table linens, stunning chandeliers hanging above, and a vase filled with white calla lilies as a guest table centerpiece. What is more suiting for a backyard wedding than barbecue type foods? Guests enjoy a buffet of various barbecue foods. After dancing away, fireworks light up the dark sky.
  • Lynette loves locally grown food. What a better place than having her wedding is set at a farm. The ceremony is in the middle of a vast field with grazing cows in the distance. The ceremony was very personal, with personal vows shared and a very close friend of the couple as their officiant. Guests walk into the barn where the reception takes place. The barn is beautiful with twinkle lights, hanging chandeliers, and simple tree and flower centerpieces.  With their love for food, the couple served a choice of seafood, meat, or chicken. Milkshakes at a wedding? Yes indeed! Following dinner, guests got to enjoy Vanilla or Chocolate milk shakes. A flash mob dance was performed for the couple and their guests. Lynette and her groom are both actors and have friends who are in Broadway and other productions, so this was perfect way to share their love for performance.
  • Nicole is a bride who loves the sea and sets off to the ocean on a yacht with her guests to say ” I do”. Before boarding the yacht, a stop if made at a church for their ceremony. The ceremony decor is very simple, with no wedding type decor, however there are some church features of stained glass windows.  Once married, Nicole and her groom and all their guests set sail on a yacht to celebrate. Inside the yacht, the decor was very simple: A large ice sculpture, a pot of flowers as centerpieces on the tables, and a simple three tier cake.
  • Wendy loves colonial times and has her wedding at venue which steps back in time. Recreated like a time of an eighteen century New England village, guests are surrounded with all that is during that time.  A horse and carriage takes guests to the ceremony spot. A traditional meeting house is where the ceremony takes place with eighteen century dressed men passing out programs as guests walk in. Inside you will find candles lit chandeliers  and very simple decor, keeping with the eighteen century theme. Guests find their way to their table with escort antique style keys. Keeping with the eighteen century era, inside the reception space was all candle lit, wooden chairs, mason jars and candles for centerpieces, and a quaint overall look. Surrounded by strobe lights, the dance floor is full of guests dancing the night away.

Cool factor:  There was one detail from each wedding that stood out for me. What I loved at Jessica’s wedding was the personalized tree stump made for the couple. A close friend of the couple engraved the couples initials with a heart on a tree stump. It was something unique and special, and I thought it was perfect for a wedding day. It is great because they can then bring it home and display it. How cute is that! Lynette’s dress was gorgeous! She wore a all lace dress with a low back and beautiful details of bottons going down the back of the dress. The dress complimented her wedding style very well. That dress was meant for her, simply stunning!   The views of the Boston skyline was pretty amazing at Nicole’s wedding. To be able to go to the top deck and experience Boston in that fashion is pretty unique and memorable.  What I thought was so sweet was Wendy and her groom’s personal vows which they shared with each other. I really love when couples exchange personal words about their love with each other. It is so heartfelt and just sweet.

Who won? Congrats to Wendy for winning!  She and her husband won an all expenses paid honeymoon to Jamaica  I was kind of surprised about Wendy coming into first place. I actually thought that Lynette was going to win it all. I really loved every detail of Lynette’s wedding. However, Wendy came in second with my voting. So I was pretty close right?  While I can not account for the food since I wasn’t actually there, I did like the originality, venue, and the dress for Wendy’s wedding. Keeping with the eighteen century theme, I thought that every detail of her wedding was really authentic.  A wedding which I think you would agree would be one to attend and really enjoy. Great job Wendy!  So how did the other three brides score? Lynette came super close (one point) at second, Nicole in third, and Jessica in fourth place. Were you surprised by the results?
