Eight Tips to have Trendy and Textured Hair

It is a lovely Summer Sunday, and I am thrilled for it. I love summer and weekends. These two make the best combo yet!  Gorgeous weather plus sleeping in, taking it easy, and enjoying the morning sun equals perfection!  As a bride or bridesmaid, or any gal of the wedding, we girls typically like to do what it takes to keep our hair healthy, stylish, and beautiful. With the ever-changing trends of fashion, most of us girls like to keep current with the latest hair styles and trends. Keeping your hair in great shape is an amazing feeling, and why not feel amazing if we can? Right?  Consider the following eight hair tips which can pretty up that hair and get it to what you want in looking and feeling oh so gorgeous.

  1. Healthy hair is an outcome of a body that is healthy. Eat a diet full of nutrition and drink lots of clean water to improve the appearance of your hair. Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beneficial fats and lean protein all lend to happy and healthy hair.
  2. If your hair looks dull and lifeless, consider using a clarifying shampoo. Dulling of the hair can be caused by product accumulation. To prevent this, use a clarifying shampoo a couple times each week to remove any accumulated residue from dirt and hair care products.
  3. When you’re selecting new hair care products, it’s best to seek out products that contain natural ingredients. Make sure your hair type matches the shampoos and conditioners that you buy. Until you have found the right product for your hair, keep trying different ones.
  4. When hair conditioning, be sure to spread the conditioner evenly throughout your hair for best results. Allow your conditioner a minimum of two minutes to absorb into the hair before you rinse it out.
  5. If you swim often, wet your hair thoroughly before entering the pool. Unless you wear a swim cap, you should also take a few minutes to rinse and condition hair soon after you leave the pool; this helps to reduce the overall amount of damage.
  6. Have you considered adding more texture to your hair? It is a lot easier to style textured hair than non-textured hair. Texture is added to hair via style, cut or choosing to get a perm. Your hair will naturally be fuller, and you will be able to experiment with many types of styles and looks.
  7. Exercise caution so that you do not remove essential oils from the hair when you shampoo. Even if you have oily hair, using a harsh shampoo that removes all traces of oil can actually create rebound oiliness in your hair. Instead, look for a shampoo that cleanses your hair gently. Some folks forgo the shampoo and use only conditioner a couple times a week.
  8. Make sure you protect your hair from the sun! Many hair care products also have a sunscreen in them. A hat is another option you can try out. You know to protect your skin from the sun, but you might be neglecting your hair. It can also be damaged by the rays of the sun.

Five Tips on Accessorizing Your Bridal Gown

1. The Look: Weddings are all about picking a theme and going all out with it. So first of all, think about the feel and the look that you are going for. Do you want a 1920’s vintage feel? Then try incorporating a bird cage veil, or a feathery headpiece with a lace applique. Are you looking for a Spanish feel? Then try a big flower headpiece, or a Mantilla veil that will drape beyond the edge of your train. Or are you going for classic elegance? Then try and keep your accessories to a minimum. Pick your accessories and gown that go with the feeling that you are going for, and that feeling will be conveyed to your friends and family.

2. Match: It is also important to match accessories to your gown in order to bring out its’ beauty in the right light. For example, if your gown has a belt that has some pearls and beads on it, then find earrings or a veil that has both of those items. It is best to keep the accessories in unison to have them flow right into your dress. If your gown has chunky beads on it, don’t accessorize with pearl earrings. Try and match the items as closely as possible.

Veil & Belt

3. Compliment: Take a good look at your gown and see if it is simple or busy on its own, as they both have their pros and cons. Simple dresses allow for more accessories and chunky jewelry or statement pieces. Try on beaded belts, big earrings, or thick bracelets. Sometimes a simple belt can dress up the gown to a whole other level, and give it a unique look. If your dress is very busy with lace or bling, refrain from using thick laced veils or chunky jewelry. Less is more with these gowns, and simple accessories add to its beauty without detracting any attention from it. Otherwise your audience will be too busy trying to figure out where to look instead of looking at you. Also, if you are wearing a bracelet, be sure to wear it on the opposite hand as your engagement ring. It will compliment and even out your bridal look.

4. Try On: It is really hard to match accessories without having your gown around, or without even having it on! So be sure to try on different veils, head pieces, and jewelry while you have the gown on your body. A good time to do that is usually once the dress comes in and you go in for your try on appointment. It can be a bit overwhelming to try and pick everything on the same day as you picked your gown, so wait until your dress comes in to do so.

Earrings & Belt

5. Ask: Be sure to ask your consultant for any accessory suggestions. They have a pretty good eye in finding the appropriate accessories since they are around the gowns constantly and know what goes well with what. Be open to their suggestions and have fun with it! They will enjoy dressing you up until your look is completed to perfection.

Five Tips for Finding Your Wedding Makeup Artist

Wedding planning is a major task- it’s completely fine to feel overwhelmed at times. One major task for brides is finding your makeup artist. This may be daunting, but by following these tips and tricks you’ll be able to find the perfect artist for your wedding.

Look Through What You Like

If you have a favorite makeup brand, start there. Most makeup counters employ makeup artists, and they will be very familiar with your favorite brand. Even if you don’t find anyone who freelances there, chances are they will be able to direct you to someone who does.  Major makeup brands typically have pro teams who specialize in events and can also freelance.  Asking for cards is an easy way to start networking with freelancers.

Asking Around, Of Course!

Your bridal party can be an excellent resource for finding your makeup artist. There’s always a chance they have a sister or cousin you didn’t know about who is a cosmetics queen. You’ll still want to see a portfolio or do a test run, through. Do remember that just because they’re a friend doesn’t mean it has to work out. Don’t ever feel pressured to say yes to someone based on your relationship with them.

Ask the Experts

If you have a wedding coordinator, don’t be afraid to ask them! Since you will be working closely with your wedding coordinator, they already know the look and feel of your wedding. This will help them suggest an artist that they trust for you. Wedding professionals also tend to have an excellent network of professionals at their disposal, so they are sure to at least set you up with potential artists.

It’s perfectly fine to try out a few different makeup artists and do a few trial runs. After all, you want to look and feel your best on your wedding day. These next tips are to help you narrow down your choices and find the makeup artist of your dreams.

Ask For References

All makeup artists will have some variation of a portfolio to show potential clients.  Many makeup artists have either blogs or youtube channels that showcase their skills and work in the industry. This can be a handy way of seeing what a makeup artist is capable of and if they are indeed what you are looking for. Looking through blogs may also help you find links to other artists that they know, which can expand your search. On the flip side, you may be able to find artists by searching makeup blogs in your city.

Do a Full Day Test Run

Everyone’s skin and routine is different. If you’re caught between two or three artists, schedule a trial run of full face makeup early in the day. Take pictures immediately after they’re done, and then towards the end of the day. Take careful note of how your skin feels and how you feel in that much makeup. Keep your eyes out for any color fallout or discoloration. Be sure to test the colors and consistencies both indoors and outdoors. Over the course of a day, your skin may get oilier or redder. You want to make sure you find someone who really tailors your look to your skin so you look flawless all day.

  1. Look for a hotel that offers free parking and stay the night before leaving from a port city, on a cruise. You can check with staff at the hotel for unpublished parking deals.
  2. Purchase tickets online for any attraction you may be visiting. You will generally pay a nominal fee for this service, but you won’t have to wait in ticket lines when you arrive. Some parks now have tickets that contain a specific time in order to avoid lines.

  4. Try opting in to e-newsletters of major airlines. E-newsletters show you any special discounts or last-minute offers they have available. Yes, they will fill your inbox more, but the rewards and savings can be worth it.
  5. If you enjoy visiting the gorgeous National Parks and plan to do so often, consider investing in an affordable National Park Pass. They are only $50 and can be used for one year at all of the parks.

Eleven Bridal Hair Care Tips

Good morning weekenders! Another gorgeous summer day here in Southern California. Talking about gorgeous things, we want you to feel and looking oh so fabulous for your big day. At BHL, we are kind of obsessed with beauty and all that goes along with it.  Are you tired of dealing with split ends? Or having that frizzy hair that wont stop? This is where you will find answers.  We have eleven fabulous hair care tips that will make it easy to avoid hair issues, as well as improve the overall health of your hair.

  1. If your hair seems dull or lifeless, consider your diet. The health of your hair depends on some vital nutrients, including vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron. If your diet is lacking in these nutrients, consider supplementing it with a daily multivitamin.
  2. Never pull at your hair or rub it with a towel when you’re drying it. This can cause frizz and stretches your hair, causing breakage. Use softer patting or blotting to remove excess water. You could also try a gentle squeeze with your towel. For best results, avoid using a brush on wet hair. Wide-toothed combs are your best bet for removing tangles in this state.
  3. What you eat impacts what your hair looks like. Your hair is living; you need to give it the right things to help it grow. When your diet lacks the proper vitamins and nutrients, your hair can become brittle, weak, and unattractive. A serious loss in these nutrients can lead to you losing your hair. So ensure you are taking great care of your hair by eating the proper foods.
  4. Clarifying shampoo may be something you’re going to have to invest into when your hair is dull. Hair product build up can be the cause of dull looking hair. To prevent this, try using a clarifying shampoo one or two times a week, in order to strip any dirt or hair care product residue that has accumulated.
  5. When you’re selecting new hair care products, it’s best to seek out products that contain natural ingredients. It is also important to consider your specific hair type as you choose a shampoo and conditioner. Do not hesitate to try different products until you find out which one works best for your hair.
  6. Alcohol damages hair, and can cause it to be dull, dry and lifeless. This is really bad for the health of your hair, and you should be careful of what products you use. Learn to read and understand labels, and choose products with ingredients that benefit your hair.
  7. Include texture when considering your hairstyle. When your hair is textured, your styling time will be reduced. This can be achieved through a perm or by the way your hair is cut or styled. It is certainly true that the right haircut can add volume and variety to your style.
  8. Use a towel to dry your hair as much as possible before using a blow dryer. Using heat to dry your hair is unnatural and causes your hair damage over time. Hair can look dull and damaged after excessive blow-drying removes the moisture and natural oils that keep individual strands of hair looking their best. The more water you can remove with a towel, the less heat you’ll need with the blow dryer.
  9. Just like you protect your skin from sun damage, you need to keep your hair from sun damage, too. When outdoors, wear a hat or use a protective spray to keep your hair from being damaged by the sun or wind. You also have the benefit of preventing any scalp burns. The sun also tends to fade color-treated hair a bit faster too.
  10. Brushing your hair too much should be avoided. While brushing frequently and thoroughly may appear to enhance your hair, you may be doing damage. Brushing pulls hairs out from follicles, which can damage individual strands.
  11. You do not need to wash your hair each and every day. When you shampoo your hair you remove the hair’s natural oils and moisture, frequently resulting in damage. You should wash at maximum on alternating days, or if you can manage it, once a week.

The new improved look and feel of your hair will surprise you. So go on, get all gorgeous and treat your hair with a whole lot of love!

Top Five Fool Proof Wedding Favors

As a wedding guest, I am always curious as to see what the bride and groom have planned for their wedding favors. Will it be one more useless trinket holder for me to find some empty patch of bookshelf to store it away and gather dust? When planning your wedding favors, it can be tricky to discern what will be appreciated by your guests as cherished mementos from your wedding, and what favors will be added to their stockpile of knick knacks or even just tossed in the trashcan. Favors should be unique, thoughtful, and fit within your theme and budget; and, if it isn’t edible, it should be useful. As a general rule of thumb, think twice before you engrave your initials, names, and wedding date on every favor. No one really wants a picture frame or a wine glass with your initials emblazoned across the front (sorry). Also, it’s a good idea to stay away from favors that are strongly scented, such as candles and soaps—people can be sensitive to certain smells or just plain picky about the aroma of their home. Lastly, keep favors gender neutral; I’ve seen many a man go home with compacts and lip balms, only to mutter to themselves, “I guess I will give this to my girlfriend/wife/neighbor/coworker…”

To help kick start your brainstorming juices, we’ve made of list of our top five fool proof wedding favor ideas!

Seasonal Wedding Favors

To ensure that your wedding favors are useful to your guests, keep in mind the time of year that you are having your wedding. Sunglasses are a fun and fashionable favor for summer weddings, while chapstick or ornaments are great for the winter months. I have recently fallen in love with wildflower papers—these papers will plant beautiful spring flowers, giving your guests a colorful reminder of your wedding.

Food, Nom Nom

If I have to see another tiny pail filled with pastel almonds I will scream. Just because your wedding favor is food doesn’t mean that it can’t also be thoughtful or creative. Gifting your guests something that is local or unique to your town or heritage is always appreciated, such as local honey, preserves, hot sauce, or olive oil. Do you have a favorite family dessert or dish? Package the dry ingredients and attach the recipe. Bonus points for you if you include a vegan or gluten-free option!

Giftable Decorations

If you are struggling to find ways to decorate the tables at your reception, allow your wedding favors to do the job. Succulents in teacups and small flowerpots, as well as vintage picture frames, can serve as table place markers. Personalized miniature flower vases can hold flower arrangements for your table, while also working as a gift for your guests to enjoy at home.

Wedding Appropriate

Wedding favors that can be used while at the reception are always fun because of their instant gratification factor. A tub filled with flip flops in a variety of sizes are welcome to any guest who wants to kick off their uncomfortable formal shoes and boogie on the dance floor. Classy hangover kits are humorous, and more often that not, incredibly appreciated the morning after! Journals, luggage tags, and reusable nylon bags are great for destination weddings, but can continue to be used and enjoyed at home.

Helping Others

A surefire way to make sure your wedding favor is useful and appreciated is to make a charity donation on behalf of your guest. A simple card with a personal note explaining to your guests that a donation has been made, along with a description of the charity and its work, is a gift that is more meaningful and long lasting than treats or bottle openers or tiny boxes.

Seven Tips on Getting Fit for the Wedding Day

Wedding Wednesday is here and we are getting fit today! Yep, that’s right. Fitness and good health are super important, and not  just so you can fit into your bridal gown, or that slim suit, but it is a good habit to have all the time. Regular exercise is associated with a whole host of psychological, physical, and emotional benefits, and can have a tremendous impact on one’s overall wellbeing. So why not get fit and be refreshed and feeling oh so good for the big day?  Many times, however, with all the wedding planning, you may struggle with incorporating enough exercise into the mix. So we have seven fabulous fitness tips to get you into shape. Ready to get fit and feeling amazing?

  1. When working out some soreness is normal, but pain is not. Working out is often uncomfortable as you are working to increase your endurance and limits; however, it should not be outright painful. If you ever experience severe pain when working out, stop what you are doing immediately. If the pain does not subside, head to the doctor, as you may have suffered an injury.
  2. When working out, make sure you take your time and focus on doing any and all exercises properly. Even if you can’t do as many or goes as long as you could if you were using short cuts, you’ll get much better results by doing fewer perfect form exercises. Not to mention that by using short cuts or improper form you could end up injuring yourself.
  3. Don’t sign up for a gym membership sight unseen. Gym’s can vary wildly in terms of there decor, atmosphere, focus, and equipment. The feel of a gym can make a huge impact on how often you go. Make sure you like the layout, the amenities, and even the other people working out. If a gym isn’t a good fit for you, you won’t go so make sure you check them out in person.
  4. A simple way to improve overall fitness can be done right at home. Whenever an individual is at home they can go up and down the stairs an extra time for every time they use the stairs. By doing this one will double the amount of exercise that they would get from using the stairs.
  5. Running is one of the best forms of exercise you can do to get into shape. Try your best to at least attempt a jog every other day or so. You can slowly increase your pace and before you know it, you’re burning a lot of calories. When it comes to running it’s all a mind-set, so get your mind strong and your body will follow.
  6. There will be days when you have zero motivation to workout. On days like this, commit to doing just ten minutes of exercise. If you get started, chances are you will continue exercising past the first ten minutes. Even if you don’t continue exercising, ten minutes is better than no minutes.
  7. In order to build better abs, don’t work your abdominal muscles too often. Your ab muscles are just like the other muscles in your body and require rest. Don’t work your abdominal muscles two days in a row, only work them two or three days a week, with at least one day of rest in-between.

People who exercise on a regular basis often notice a dramatic improvement in their mood, energy level, and stamina. The health benefits of regular exercise are well documented. We hope these tips have helped you to stay fit not only during the wedding planning time, but hope you will keep physical fitness a priority in your life! Happy  planning and exercising!

Beauty Timeline for Brides

The question has been popped (along with some champagne, hopefully)! Congratulations, now all you have left to do is plan the most spectacular party of your life! A bride has a lot to juggle for her wedding, so being organized is imperative. Your makeup look on your wedding will be photographed constantly, so you want to make sure it works for you. This timeline will help you be prepared for all your makeup needs for the big day.

Six Months To Go

This is when you should be deciding on your wedding’s theme. Depending on your theme, look into what makeup looks fall into that category and what would work for you. If you are a bride who is organizing a classic wedding, consider red lips and full lashes. For more modern weddings, you have more room to play with colors like fuchsia or orange. Also consider your wedding colors when planning what style you will be going for. You may love a peachy tones, but it may clash with your surrounding colors. Aim for a color palette that will work cohesively with your wedding color palette. It may be handy to save looks that you like or find flattering and compare them to your wedding theme. If you’re having trouble finding colors and looks that work, ask your bridesmaids to help.  You may love doing big blue eyeliner when you go to parties, but it may clash with a classic romantic style wedding.

You don’t want to end up with too many color options. It’s good to narrow it down to a core family of colors early on.

Three Months To Go

With your theme in mind, it is time to shop for makeup artists. Beauty advisers at department stores are more often than not freelance makeup artists, and they are a great resource for trying colors and products out. You can go to a counter of a brand you like and talk to someone there, or if you are a little more lost you can try a counter like Impulse at Macy’s or MAC. Impulse at Macy’s carries many different brands, and MAC has a very wide range of products geared towards creating many different looks. Find a beauty adviser that you find friendly and explain your theme to them. It is free and perfectly fine to ask what kind of look they can create for you. You should not feel pressured to buy anything or give them a definitive answer at the time. This is more for you to see what works for you and get acquainted with make up artists. Talk to a few different people and see who you click most with. From there you can take business cards and decide who you want to work with. It can be handy to take a bridesmaid with you who can take pictures of any makeup tests you do.

One Month To Go

With only one month left, it is important that you settle on a makeup artist. You should discuss and confirm the date, time, and location of your wedding with them. With only a few short weeks left, you and your artist should have a final foundation test. If you will be doing any tanning or spray tanning, let them know so they can be adequately prepared for your wedding. During your makeup test with your artist, have a friend (preferably your maid of honor) with you to take pictures. You want to make sure you know how exactly what your makeup routine will consist of.  This can also help you plan your preparation time before your wedding.  It is also good to talk to your makeup artist about your skin type, whether it is oily, dry, or combination. This helps give them an idea of what kind of primer and products they should use for you.  The more prepared your makeup artist will be, the smoother things will run on the actual day.

One Week To Go

With a week left, you want to make sure you confirm again with your makeup artist. It’s good to follow through and keep everyone on the same page. If you will be getting a manicure or pedicure, you should confirm that you have appointments secured. You should also start skipping any oily food or carbonated drinks. Use this last week as a cleansing week so that your skin will be as refreshed as possible. If you do facials, it’s best to do one within the last week so your skin won’t be red or irritated on your wedding day. If you’ve never done a facial, this is not the time to try it out. Opt for a mud masque instead- there’s far less risk of possible irritation. I like the Queen Helene line ($4-$6, drugstores) for at home masques. They are easy to apply and make my skin quite soft.

One Day To Go

The day before your wedding, keep your makeup to a minimum. Keep your skin as clean as possible and make sure to wear sunscreen. Consider it keeping your canvas clear. That eliminates any chance of build up or leftover product on your big day. The day before the wedding is your opportunity to take care of any skin cleansing you may need to do, such as pore unclogging. I like the Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips ($6-$7, drugstores) for clearing out pores. If you have any stray hairs, this is your last chance to pluck them. Any redness will be gone by the next day, and you won’t have to worry about it on the day of your wedding. The night before your wedding, consider putting vitamin E oil or lip conditioner on before going to sleep. Carmex ($2-$4, drugstores) is excellent at moisturizing lips and is quite easy to find. If you lather it on, your lips will be pillow soft in the morning and perfect for your first kiss as a married woman.

Everything You Need To Know About Throwing The Perfect Wedding

We’re always looking for ways to simplify the complicated things in our lives. This definitely holds true for something as large and as complex as a wedding. Just the thought alone is enough to overwhelm you. Here are some great wedding tips that you can use to make the process a little bit easier.

One of the most vital things that you will have to do is to stick to your budget when you are getting married. You will have a lot of temptation to spend a great deal of money, but will have to understand your financial restrictions to avoid getting into a hole.

Before you get married, make sure you discuss the subject of children with your prospective mate. Having this discussion beforehand will avoid any disagreements after you’re married.

One of the most vital aspects of your wedding is going to be the music that you play. Make sure that the music is modern, but is very personal too, as it should represent the two parties tying the knot. This will add to the ambience of the overall experience of your wedding.

When thinking of what to give your guests as a wedding favor gift, consider who you’re inviting. If half your family are recovering alcoholics, then a bottle of wine is probably not a good idea. If they’re diabetics, then candy won’t work, either. Choose something they’re likely to keep as a memento and not throw out when they get home.

It might initially seem as if planning a wedding is something that couldn’t possibly be simplified, but all you need is some practical advice to help guide you along the way. What you just read are some tips dealing with weddings, in general. Hopefully, this information will help you out when that big day comes.

Seven Skin Care Tips for Healthy Skin: Wedding Ready

Your wedding day is coming up, and there are many fabulous details to take care such as planning the menu, picking out the gorgeous flowers, or finding the perfect groomsmen gift. However, another very important detail to take care is your skin. You really do not want to miss this detail. Your wedding day will be a constant photograph session, with snaps from every direction. Not only do you want your skin to be fresh and photo ready, but you want to feel good too.  The proper way to care for your skin isn’t always obvious. Acne breakouts, dryness and sun damage are a few of the many skin conditions you can experience. Through life, you will experience many types of skin, so it is important to have all necessary treatment information available. Here are some great tips for keeping your skin glowing.

  1.  Guys, this one is for you. Avoid shaving your skin when it’s dry. In addition, you should never shave when you don’t have any shaving cream or any other similar product that can lather. You can irritate your skin by shaving it dry. This can cause razor burn and/or ingrown hairs to develop. After shaving, apply lotion to your skin. You can reduce the inflammation and irritation.
  2. Exfoliate your skin if you want it to be healthy and glowing. Dead skin is removed and new skin is allowed to breathe. Exfoliation works to unclog pores, which helps eliminate acne-causing oil buildups.
  3. A good treatment for enlarged pores, acne, or oily skin is a face wash that contains some lemon juice. Once or twice weekly, use the lemon juice to shrink enlarged pores and soak up excess oil.
  4. For a do it yourself way to get gorgeous skin, make a facial mask at home. Grind raw almonds with olive oil and milk until a paste is formed. Mix in a bit of ground orange peel. Apply the mask to your facial area and then let it remain for a quarter of an hour. Afterwards, wash your face gently and then, rub with an ice cube.
  5. After you’ve gone to the gym, try taking a shower to get rid of sweat. Towel drying won’t get the oil out of your pores. Also, your water should not be too hot or cold.
  6. Honey is a great mask ingredient. This will stop any redness and cause the skin to look brighter. When used weekly, this can greatly improve the overall appearance of your skin.
  7. Use a sponge to apply sunscreen. This will allow you to apply a smooth and even coat of the lotion on your body. Using the sponge gives the sunscreen a better chance to penetrate into the skin, allowing it to absorb to the best of its ability. In addition, it keeps your hands dry and clean.

If you follow these tips, it will help you obtain incredible skin. It’s important that you keep in mind that your skin needs to be taken care of so that it looks great, no matter how old you are. Use what you learned here and your skin will thank you.
