Top Five Wedding Invitation Tips

When it comes to wedding planning, there are a lot of details to think about. At BHL, we are always looking to provide you with all the tips you need to make wedding planning a bit easier.  There are so many wedding details to think about including the wedding invitation. How do you get started with this process? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

We asked our lovely friend and Wedding Planner expert, Carmen Fuentes of Expressionary Events , to share her tips on wedding invitations. Here is what she shared with us:

  1. Give yourself ample time to send out your invitations.

    • As soon as you determine your wedding date and your wedding style, try to order your invitations at least 6-8 months in advance. January through April is particularly a busy time for designers, so expect rush fees if ordering last minute.  Once you receive your order, invitations should be sent at least 6-8 weeks in advance. But obviously, the earlier the better so guests have ample time to plan.  Especially if your wedding falls on a holiday or at a destination where hotels get booked up quickly.
  2. Make sure you choose the correct wording:
    •  Research invitation wording etiquette and consider font and wording style. Traditionally, whoever is hosting the wedding is listed first on the invitation. The formality of the wording particularly important because your invitation is the first glimpse your guests will get into your wedding. If the wording is formal, your guests will expect a formal wedding.
  3. Additional information cards are especially helpful:
    •  Don’t try to squeeze too much onto the invitation card.  Crowding the invitation can make it difficult to read and it won’t look as elegant. Leave things like directions, wedding website, or accommodations on an additional information card. Also keep in mind that the only acceptable place to list your wedding registry information is on your wedding website.
  4. Order extra invitations:
    •  Order enough invitations for your guest list plus 10-15 extra in case you need to resend an invitation or plan on sending invitations to your “B” list guests. Ordering additional invitations after you received your order can be expensive and  designers may require a minimum order.
  5. RSVP must haves:
    •  It may seem obvious but its easy to forget to put a stamp on the RSVP card. Make it easy for guests to mail back their reply cards with pre-addressed stamped envelopes. Also to keep in mind is to put your guests’ name on the card so when you get it back in the mail you know who its from. Many guests will tend to reply but forget to write in their name.

A Gorgeous Football Themed Wedding From Expressionary Events

As much as I am obsessed with all things wedding, I am a HUGE NFL football fan!  With football season coming to an end with the big game of the year, (The Super Bowl), we wanted to take a look at what a wedding would look like when it combines a couple’s love for football and their love for each other. Oh my goodness, it looks pretty darn good! I love it! A football themed  wedding may seem very tacky, but when  it is done right and you have the very talented Carmen Fuentes from Expressionary Events planning it, then you have yourself a fabulous wedding. This is why I am so in love with this wedding. It has the perfect amount of football details added to a gorgeously decorated wedding day. This wedding ticks all the boxes of what it means to have a couple of die hard football fans getting married in the most lovely of ways.

From Carmen at Expressionary Events

Audra and Danny got married at the beautiful Hotel Maya in Long Beach, CA and when planning their wedding, they wanted to somehow incorporate their love of football into the details.  The bride was a huge Redskins fan and the groom was a diehard Patriots fan. Although they rooted for opposite teams, they decided to add subtle details into their wedding and combine their love of football together.  The card-box was beautifully decorated with mini football helmets of their favorite team.  Each of the table numbers had alternating football jerseys of their favorite players as well as the bride and groom with their respective team.  The bride loved the team so much, her primary wedding colors was red and white as seen in her florals,  bouquet, and bridesmaids dresses. The color scheme was perfect for the venue because the hotel is known for its bold and bright hues and the wedding color made the perfect statement.

From Carmen of Expressionary Events
Our inspiration for this shoot came from the gorgeous southern californian beaches. We wanted to create a beach feel for the Hilton, Costa Mesa.  So, for the bride that wants to bring elements of beach that can’t necessary afford the beach venue, the beach elements can be incorporated and brought into the hotel. Seashells were added in the vases of the centerpieces, and the bride’s jewelry has stars and seashells. We wanted to use the word LOVE in a creative way. It is used with the bride’s earrings, on the aisle runner, and even on the plates of the cake. A fun summer leading into fall wedding idea with inspiration colors that could be used for either season.  Lush, romantic flowers, celebrating love.

From Carmen of Expressionary Events

The idea and inspiration came from the designers’ love for the outdoors and romantic picnics. There is a certain allure and serenity of being in the outdoors among the trees and nature. We choose Rancho Las Lomas, a beautiful garden venue that is surrounded by citrus trees, stunning architecture, and exotic wildlife. This venue provides couples with plenty of opportunities to incorporate a rustic chic feel at every corner of the property. The concept was to create a whimsical yet rustic style wedding for brides that want to have a more causal and intimate wedding but may not know how to accomplish the look or feel.

Elements included in the shoot:

  • Different floral patterns as well as wood elements were chosen to complement the outdoor elements in the shoot.
  • Color palette: The main color palette for the shoot consisted of jewel tones such as pink, purples and ivory
  • Bride fashion & jewelry: For the bride, we chose a dress that really tied in the theme all together. The sweetheart neckline and tulle gown made the look very whimsical. Small lace and beaded embellishments creating a romantic feel.
  • Bride  Jewelry:  We kept the look simple with a tear drop necklace, and matching bracelets. The statement piece was the gorgeous Grecian inspired headpiece by AlwaysAri.
  • Grooms Fashion: We kept the Groom very casual in khaki pants,a plaid dress shirt, and suspenders with a faux leather bow tie made by AlwaysAri to complement the ‘Rustic Picnic Theme. Keeping the tie into the romantic elements
  • Bride hair & make-up: The Bride’s makeup was done really soft with pinks and pastels to create a very natural yet whimsical feel. Her hair was half up half down with multiple braids to create the very outdoor and natural look with relaxed curls. Her hair was finished off with a Grecian headpiece fit for any bride looking to make a statement on her wedding day.
  • Flowers & event décor: For the table scape gray and white toned linen was used to blend nicely with the trunk like vase that held jewel toned flowers of pinks and purples. Bamboo place mats were placed underneath a ivory plate and special silverware with garden engraved pictures finished off the table décor. Wine and berries were incorporated to bring in elements of a rustic picnic wedding.
  • Cake: The cake was decorated with rosettes and floral to complement the theme. The cake sat on a special designed cake stand made out of wood and milk glass.  The table was adorned with a knife and server decorated with the same designs as the silverware on the table.

We want couples to get concepts from this shoot and be able to create it for their wedding day. Simply by choosing key statement pieces such as a headpiece or bamboo place mats can really make a difference in make something come to life at your event. Picnics are simple but with the right decor you can always bring elegance to anything.

Expressionary Events Features Bridal Hot List in a Video Interview

I have some exciting news that I can not wait to share with all of you on this lovely Monday morning. It is so fabulous, that you better sit down for this one. So grab your morning coffee, get comfy, and ready for some pretty amazing information.  Bridal Hot List had their first interview! I had the pleasure to be interviewed by the very talented Wedding Planner and Designer, Carmen Fuentes of Expressionary Events for Expression Spotlight. What an exciting moment for BHL. As chief editor of Bridal Hot List, I shared who we are, what we do, and what type of wedding details we feature on the blog.  I shared how we are not your typical wedding blog, and that we are THE resource for today’s bride, providing the hottest trends and tips. What got my heart bursting with joy was talking about the two (now three) TLC television shows we cover: TLC’s “Four Weddings” and “Something Borrowed, Something New” (added to the list is “I Found the Gown”). What was really great is when I shared some of the pretty exciting moments I have had at BHL. For example,  I had the wonderful opporunity in meeting top stylist, Sam Saboura, and fashion designer Kelly Nishimoto from ” Something Borrowed, Something New”. THAT was amazing because they provided me with some incredible wedding tips and trends. An interesting fact that I spoke of was that not all our readers are brides…we actually have grooms who are really intrigued by the tips and trends we provide. That is something that has motivated us to write more for the grooms. I mean, they are the other piece to the lovely duo of a wedding couple.

What really fills my heart with joy is the chance to share what I truly love and have a passion for. I love my job! How many people can say that? There are so many reasons and to name a few…I am constantly immersed in beautiful weddings, gorgeous inspirations, all the crazy talented people, and making some amazing connections with all of you. The brides and grooms, and wedding junkies are driving this wedding blog which I am so proud of.

I like to say a big THANK YOU to Carmen Fuentes for this truly amazing opportunity!

Pre-Wedding Parties Inspired by The Great Gatsby

Giddy over Gatsby? Us too. We are starting a new week with celebration of the Great Gatsby movie premiere . Some of us have pulled our old copies of the book, reading it all over again. We are totally obsessed with the Great Gatsby era and all the elegance, charm, and glamour it brings.  So, when we received this Great Gatsby inspired shoot, our Gatsby loving hearts geared into full swoon mode! We are talking total bliss.  Carmen Fuentes of Expressionary Events  is the gal behind this awe-inspiring concept, as she brings the Great Gatsby to us in the most glamorous of ways.  We can not get over the stunning details that are getting us even more excited for the movie! To kick things off, we are going to share a couple of looks to get you not only inspired and prepped for the movie premiere, but also for  your wedding day look.  Get ready to feast your pretty eyes on  jaw-dropping glitz and glam.

First, a little about the shoot…

The Great Gatsby gives us glimpse of an era of elegance, sophistication and glamour and so we drew inspiration from this great American novel to capture the looks. Our vision was to portray a prosperous time in American history by bringing in elements of lush and romance into the unique décor details of each space. The shoot was held at the prestigious Sky Room, located atop the historic Breakers of Long Beach Hotel. Since the 1920’s, this Art Deco venue has entertained Hollywood luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Charles Lindberg, and Cary Grant.

With the May 2013 release of Baz Luhrmann’s adapted film of the Great Gatsby, our goal was to offer inspiration options for brides who would like to capture this moment in time and incorporate modern elements into their wedding theme. We noticed many bridal gown designers such as Kitty Chen and Allure anticipated the release of this film and they created a modern line of wedding gowns and accessories in vintage silk, satin and lace. These and other designers are bringing a modern feeling to the classic shape of the Roaring Twenties with beaded cap sleeves, low backs and drop waists.

Another element of inspiration for this shoot came from Tiana Vega’s collection of evening gowns. The collection includes sleek fabrics and symmetries as well as dark colors that are reminiscent of the 1920’s. Much of the inspiration for the menswear seen in this shoot were taken by the Ralph Lauren designs portrayed in the 1974 adaption of The Great Gatsby. The fashion designs of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Liz Claiborne are proving that styles from the 20’s, (i.e. newsboy caps and three-piece suits) still deem relevant and withstanding the ever evolving world of fashion trends. The Color palette for the menswear in this shoot consisted of white, gray and tan tones.

  • Jay Gatsby Inspired “Bachelor Party” Look:  What would Jay Gatsby’s bachelor party look like? This look is 1920’s inspired with a modern twist. The men are wearing suits with newspaper boy caps, textured ties, bow ties and trimmed dress shirts.

Colors: Navy Blue, Browns, Gray, Gold, Blue
